Book Globalization Perak s Rise Relative Decline and Regeneration

Download or read book Globalization Perak s Rise Relative Decline and Regeneration written by Nazrin Shah and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-21 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Sultan Nazrin Shah - the author of the highly acclaimed works Charting the Economy and Striving for Inclusive Development - this book is a pioneering study of the many economic and social changes in the natural resource-rich Malaysian state of Perak over the last two centuries. When globalization first took hold and international trade networks broadened and deepened in the first half of the 19th century, and a new capitalist world order emerged in the second, Perak was a key player. Its tin was in high demand in Western industrializing countries and foreign capital, labour, and technology propelled it forward. By 1900, Perak accounted for almost half of Malaya's tin output and a staggering quarter of world output, with its prosperity making it the Malay peninsula's commercial hub. Likewise, during the global rubber boom that began in the early 20th century as cars were mass produced for the first time, Perak was the largest rubber-producing state in the peninsula. This book brings together a range of key sub-themes - economic geography, the institutional legacy of colonialism, increasing federal government centralization, forces of economic agglomeration, and human migration - which drove Perak's fortunes in sometimes dramatic economic cycles and ultimately led to the collapse of its tin and rubber industries and the migration of many of its young and skilled. The book concludes by looking forward, analysing Perak's characteristics, and extrapolating lessons from formerly wealthy industrial centres originally blessed with natural resources but subsequently left behind by new waves of globalization, such as Cornwall and Sheffield in the United Kingdom, and Pittsburgh and Scranton in the United States. With a new vision Perak can regenerate itself and once again emerge triumphant against a tough global background-Covid-19, war, and deglobalization.

Book Recalling Childhood

Download or read book Recalling Childhood written by Nicholas Tarling and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-07-03 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can you remember of your childhood? This was the question put to a number of ‘seniors’ asked to start from as far back as they could get, and go as far as the onset of adolescence. Their answers are in this unusual book. Topics naturally include their physical self; their parents, siblings, grandparents, friends, playmates, teachers, classmates, pets; their manners, training, rewards and punishments; food; play, toys; likes, dislikes; schools, kindergarten, elementary; outings, holidays, travel; notable experiences; dreams, nightmares, pleasures, fears. They were also invited to give an account of their physical surroundings, their home, and the context of everyday life, what they took for granted; and to draw attention to a past in which so much of what is now common was then absent: TV, cell-phones, ubiquitous motor cars, air travel. The question was directed to and accepted by people from a number of countries and with a range of experiences. Several are or were academics, and the introduction contains some comments on memory and points to commonalities among the remembered experiences, as well as differences. But the book is mainly for the general reader, who may want to ask: what can I remember of my childhood? - Let me try!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1927 when Jade is born into a wealthy family in Guangzhou, China. As she is groomed to one day marry into a life of luxury and prestige, Jade patiently awaits what she thinks is her pre-determined destiny. On the other side of the country in a remote village in Sichuan, Teak is born into poverty, groomed to be a servant maid for a family kind enough to take her in and rescue her from a life as a beggar. As a fierce civil war forces them to separately flee their motherland to the untamed terrain called Peninsular Malaya, the two eventually forge a sisterly bond without any idea of what lies ahead for both of them. As they journey through their own separate and vastly different lives, tragedies bring them closer together through shared tears, grieving, and a determination to persevere, despite their hardships. Zhu ? Pearl shares the inspiring story of two resilient Chinese women who find a way to look past their differences and celebrate what unites them in the face of challenges: love, faith, and hope. A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet. ???????,??????? Mi gui b guan jio sh mng, wn qi lai zong sh xiang de
