Book Ionizing Fronts in Plasma Propulsion and Power Generation Systems

Download or read book Ionizing Fronts in Plasma Propulsion and Power Generation Systems written by Jan Rosciszewski and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical work associated with plasma propulsion and power generation systems is discussed. Some papers are relatively closely related to experimental work and are designed to describe analytically the physical phenomena in plasma propulsion and power generating systems. Other work represents feasibility studies of new concepts in these fields. Another group of papers represents development of an analytical tool applicable to analysis of flow interacting with an electromagnetic field. (Author).

Book Ionizing Fronts in Plasma Propulsion and Power Generation Systems

Download or read book Ionizing Fronts in Plasma Propulsion and Power Generation Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The program incorporates two major items: (a) study of the efficiency of different systems of plasma propulsion devices together with a discussion of the physical phenomena associated with the energy transformation losses; (b) study of the physical parameters associated with the plasma flow such as the effect of current density resulting from ionization in a magnetic field. Other items are the influence of radiation on ionization behind a shock wave, the structure of the rarefaction discharge layer and others. In addition the feasibility of a new type of power generator and a nuclear rocket was investigated. (Author).

Book Weakly Ionized Plasmas and MHD for Enhanced Performance of Hypersonic Vehicles

Download or read book Weakly Ionized Plasmas and MHD for Enhanced Performance of Hypersonic Vehicles written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerospace Applications of Weakly Ionized Plasmas: * Power generation using MHD * Use of power to control aerodynamics and propulsion: (1) Surface plasmas for separation and turbulent transition control (virtual shapes) (2) Virtual shapes created by off-body energy addition for drag reduction, steering, shock control, flow turning (3) Plasma-assisted combustion. * Power extraction from one region and its use in another region (MHD bypass) * Dual-use MHD devices (both power generation and flow control): (1) Forces created by magnetic and electric fields acting on charged particles (transferred to neutral gas by collisions) (2) Ionization level per se is not critical if plasmas are used as a means of delivering energy to the flow (3) Ionization is critical in MHD power generation and flow control, and in cold-plasma generation of radicals (4) At high T (reentry, scramjet combustor) -- thermal ionization with alkali seed (5) At low T, artificial ionization is needed, and the ionization cost determines design and performance (6) Similar to ionization, cold plasma generation of chemically active species for combustion can have considerable energy cost (7) Both energy addition and extraction result in flow heating and losses of total pressure and (if in propulsion flowpath) thrust.

Book An Experimental and Theoretical Study of Mhd Ionizing Fronts

Download or read book An Experimental and Theoretical Study of Mhd Ionizing Fronts written by R. M. Patrick and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and theoretical description of ionization fronts propagating into hydrogen with a bias magnetic field in the plane of the front is presented. The experimental evidence showed that the absolute light intensity behind the front corresponds to a fully ionized plasma. The density ratio was obtained by measuring the magnitude of the current in the front, the front speed, and using the equation of mass and momentum. The front speeds are small compared to the Alfven velocity and are characterized by a critical velocity, i.e., the velocity a molecule must have so the kinetic energy equals the energy necessary to ionize it. A theory for the ionization front was developed which neglects the plasma pressure and abandons the condition E = V x B both ahead and behind the front. The theory predicts the front velocity and the rather unusal variation of the density ratio across the fronts with the front speed. (Author).

Book Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion

Download or read book Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion written by Dan M. Goebel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-12-22 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout most of the twentieth century, electric propulsion was considered the technology of the future. Now, the future has arrived. This important new book explains the fundamentals of electric propulsion for spacecraft and describes in detail the physics and characteristics of the two major electric thrusters in use today, ion and Hall thrusters. The authors provide an introduction to plasma physics in order to allow readers to understand the models and derivations used in determining electric thruster performance. They then go on to present detailed explanations of: Thruster principles Ion thruster plasma generators and accelerator grids Hollow cathodes Hall thrusters Ion and Hall thruster plumes Flight ion and Hall thrusters Based largely on research and development performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and complemented with scores of tables, figures, homework problems, and references, Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion: Ion and Hall Thrusters is an indispensable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing to enter the aerospace industry. It also serves as an equally valuable resource for professional engineers already at work in the field.

Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.
