Book Ionic Liquid for High Voltage Supercapacitor

Download or read book Ionic Liquid for High Voltage Supercapacitor written by Jeeyoung Yoo and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pure ionic liquids (ILs) and IL mixtures in organic solvents have been investigated for higher operating voltages around 3.0-4.0 V. ILs have design flexibility due to the numerous possible combinations of anions and cations. Current research on ILs as electrolytes has focused on several ILs, including imidazolium and pyrrolidinium. At early stages, various ILs have been studied as salts of electrolyte with organic solvents like acetonitrile and propylene carbonate. Neat ILs have been applied for high-performance electrolyte, and some of them have been used as electrolyte (1-ethyl 3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate). These liquid electrolytes need additional encapsulation; therefore, SCs applied ILs face difficulty in integration and manufacturing flexible devices. These drawbacks can be solved by adopting a polymer electrolyte because the ILs maintain the conductivity even when solidified, unlike a typical organic electrolyte. Common polymer matrixes such as PVdF, PMMA, and PVA have been suggested to embed ILs. Poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) is also studied. PIL is a polymer electrolyte containing a polymer backbone and an IL species in the monomer repeat unit. PIL-based polymer electrolytes have high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical windows, and high thermal stability.

Book excerpt: Supercapacitors are a relatively new energy storage system that provides higher energy density than dielectric capacitors and higher power density than batteries. They are particularly suited to applications that require energy pulses during short periods of time, e.g., seconds or tens of seconds. They are recommended for automobiles, tramways, buses, cranes, fork-lifts, wind turbines, electricity load leveling in stationary and transportation systems, etc. Despite the technological maturity of supercapacitors, there is a lack of comprehensive literature on the topic. Many high performance materials have been developed and new scientific concepts have been introduced. Taking into account the commercial interest in these systems and the new scientific and technological developments now is the ideal time to publish this book, capturing all this new knowledge. The book starts by giving an introduction to the general principles of electrochemistry, the properties of electrochemical capacitors, and electrochemical characterization techniques. Electrical double layer capacitors and pseudocapacitors are then discussed, followed by the various electrolyte systems. Modelling, manufacture of industrial capacitors, constraints, testing, and reliability as well as applications are also covered. The series covers advances in materials science and innovation for renewable energy, clean use of fossil energy, and greenhouse gas mitigation and associated environmental technologies.

Book Solid state NMR and Electrochemical Dilatometry Study of Charge Storage in Supercapacitor with Redox active Ionic Liquid Electrolyte

Download or read book Solid state NMR and Electrochemical Dilatometry Study of Charge Storage in Supercapacitor with Redox active Ionic Liquid Electrolyte written by Yanyu Wang and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redox-active ionic liquids are emerging as promising new electrolytes for supercapacitors, providing higher capacitance and energy density than organic or ionic liquid electrolytes. Fundamental studies of the charge storage mechanism in supercapacitors are of critical importance for the development and application of devices. Solid-state NMR (SS-NMR) methodology having the ability to provide local environment information within electrodes at the molecular level has been recently developed to study the mechanism of charge storage in supercapacitors. The charge storage in supercapacitors with organic or ionic liquid electrolytes has been studied by SS-NMR. The charge storage in supercapacitors with redox-active species that involves faradaic processes is different from those of electrochemical double-layer capacitors comprising organic solvents or ionic liquids as electrolytes. However, there are until now no published findings on charge storage mechanisms in supercapacitors with redox-active electrolytes. Therefore, fundamental studies of the charge storage mechanism in supercapacitors with redox-active ionic liquid electrolytes are needed. In this thesis, SS-NMR techniques combined with electrochemical dilatometry were used to investigate in depth the charge storage in supercapacitors comprising redox-active ionic liquid electrolytes. The charge contributed from the faradaic reaction of the redox-active species is determined for the first time by the NMR measurements. Moreover, it is revealed that the charge storage mechanism of supercapacitors with the redox-active ionic liquid electrolyte EMIm FcNTf/ACN (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ferrocenylsulfonyl (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide/acetonitrile) is driven by different charge regimes for different voltages. More specifically, charge storage on the positive electrode occurs via co-ion desorption in the low voltage range and subsequently counter-ion adsorption in the high voltage range, whereas charging on the negative electrode occurs exclusively by counter-ion adsorption over the studied voltage range. The electrochemical dilatometry measurements show macroscopic dimensional changes of the electrodes during charging, further confirming the proposed mechanism suggested by SS-NMR. The results give a detailed picture of the charge storage of supercapacitors with a redox-active ionic liquid electrolyte, providing new insights on the charge storage in supercapacitors.

Download or read book Electrosorption written by Eliezer Gileadi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gradual emergence during the last decade of the study of the mechanism of electrode reactions from the dark ages has given stimulus to a consideration of the double layer at metal-solution interfaces, which extends far outside the classical experimental studies of the capacitance of the mercury solution interface made during the 1950's by D. C. Grahame at Amherst College, Massachusetts. The central aspect of the study of an electrode reaction is the elucidation of its path and rate-determining step. Two fields are, however, prerequisites for such studies. First, it must be known what species are in the bulk of the solution, for these will seldom be simple ones such as H30~ and this study ("complex ions") has been made with both extent and depth. Second, the occupancy of the surface of the electrocatalyst and the associated field gradients must be known as a function of position in the double layer. Such "maps of the double layer" can be given with reasonable certainty up to concentrations of about 1 N for mercury in contact with solutions of inorganic ions. However, this is-or was until very recently-the extent of the know ledge. The problems confronting a fundamental approach to the rational development of, e.g., fuel cell catalysis were therefore considerable.

Book Development of Co assembly Methods for Improved Graphene ionic Liquid Supercapacitors

Download or read book Development of Co assembly Methods for Improved Graphene ionic Liquid Supercapacitors written by Zimin She and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supercapacitors, also known as electric double-layer capacitors or ultracapacitors, store energy by rapid and reversible rearrangement of ions/charges at the electrolyte/electrode interface. This physical process results in various advantages, such as high power density and long lifespan. However, compared to batteries, supercapacitors still have significantly lower energy density. Currently, great efforts focus on pursuing the efficient combination of high specific surface area (SSA) electrodes and electrolytes with wide working voltage windows. Hence, graphene-based materials have attracted considerable interest due to their high electrical conductivity and theoretical SSA, they are promising candidates for electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) as next-generation energy storage devices. The objective of this work is to develop new electrode fabrication methods to improve the performance of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) based supercapacitors. Since specific capacitance is proportional to the SSA, the main challenge for rGO based supercapacitors is to effectively prevent rGO sheets from restacking when processed into a dense, thick electrode. In the first part, a hydrophobic ionic liquid (IL), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolum bis(trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl)imide (EMImTFSI), is used as both electrolyte and spacer to separate the graphene sheets and maintain its high SSA. It is demonstrated that EMImTFSI has better chemical stability than 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMImBF4), which was used in our previous work, and reduces the corrosion of commonly used current collectors (e.g. Al, Cu). To imbibe IL prior to thermal reduction, a graphene oxide/IL dispersion was used to assembly gel-like laminated nanocomposite on common metal current collectors. To balance the loss of IL and the reduction of GO, GO/IL electrodes were reduced by ramping up from room temperature to 360 °C at 5 °C/min followed by rapid cooling. The resulting conductive films containing 80 wt% of EMImTFSI displayed a good gravimetric capacitance of 135 F/g at 5 mV/s. The above work did not take advantage of any specific interactions between the IL and GO and thus some restacking likely occurred and limited the IL-accessible surface area. Therefore, the second half of this thesis focuses on engineering specific interactions between the GO and EMImTFSI to enable a more uniform distribution of IL among the network of GO sheets. This was achieved through an EMImTFSI aqueous microemulsion formed by the addition of the surfactant, Tween 20. Under a water rich condition (> 70 wt% water), this system became an IL-in-water microemulsion and displayed an average surfactant-stabilized IL droplet size of ~8 nm. In order to observe the interaction between microemusion nanodroplets and GO sheets, the fluorescence response arising from Tween 20 and rhodamine-b were used to probe adsorption through fluorescence quenching. A significant decrease in fluorescence intensity in the presence of GO indicated the spontaneous adsorption of stabilized IL onto the GO surface - likely via hydrogen bonding. Finally, this GO dispersion with uniformly adsorbed IL-containing microemulsion nanodroples was drop-casted onto Cu foil. The precursor electrode was reduced at 300 °C to release IL and remove Tween 20 leading to a dense and conductive layered rGO/IL film (0.76 g/cm3 of rGO), which exhibited record high gravimetric (302 F/g) and volumetric capacitance (218 F/cm3). These results constitute the best performance of a graphene-based high voltage supercapacitor reported to date.
