Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energetic xenon ion collisions with neutral atoms play an important role in electric thruster plasma radiation at low electron temperatures. The respective emission excitation cross sections are necessary for the derivation of plasma parameters from the observed radiance. We present apparent emission excitation cross sections for near-infrared 5p(exp 5)6p to 5p(exp 5)6s transitions of neutral xenon impacted by singly and doubly charged xenon ions. The cross sections were measured over a laboratory energy-per-charge-number range of 100 to 900 eV, a range that covers typical Hall effect thruster discharge voltages. The cross sections are derived from ion beam luminescence spectra produced at single-collision conditions and at pressures for which radiation trapping effects were shown to be negligible. The Xe(exp 2+) cross sections are significantly higher than those of Xe2+ and increase with energy throughout the investigated range. The Xe(exp 2+) cross sections plateau at approximately 600 eV. The cross sections are incorporated in a collisional-radiative model. The calculations of near-infrared spectra demonstrate that the sensitivity of the model diagnostic with respect to electron temperature increases with ion energy.

Book excerpt: In this project the researcher had taken up the calculation of xenon apparent emission-excitation cross sections for emission lines that have diagnostic value in the analysis of Xe-propelled electric thruster plasmas. Following conclusions were made from the study: The RDW method has been shown to be applicable to transitions between excited states. Since the excitation energy of these transitions is relatively small, first-order theories are valid at lower energies than for excitations from the ground states. The accuracy of the cross section depends crucially on the accuracy of the oscillator strengths obtained from the target wave functions. The use of a relativistic formalism "j-j coupling" clearly explains the huge variation in the magnitudes of these cross sections. The objectives of the project have been achieved and the aimed metastable excitation cross section results of xenon were obtained that are required for the CRM model of Dressler and co-workers and these are being tested and new plasma modeling results are under calculation.

Book excerpt: The measurement of absolute excitation cross-sections of the asymmetric stretch mode (001) of H20 and C02 for collisions with atomic oxygen is important in understanding the signatures of high-altitude rocket plumes. Experiments are performed in a crossed molecular beam apparatus in which a CVF detector measures the collisionally-induced infrared fluorescent signal. Calibration and testing of the atomic oxygen source was completed. It was installed into the crossed beam apparatus and vacuum tested in preparation for performing the excitation cross-section measurements. Upper limits have been established for the excitation cross sections for the systems 0 + C02 and Ar + C02. The values determined are 0.03A squared for 0 + C02 at 3.85 km/sec and 0.003 A squared for Ar + C02 at 2.27 km/sec. Monte Carlo trajectory analysis of the data provides accurate correction factors to the raw data that account for kinematic and experimental constraints inherent in these measurements. It further shows that measurements near threshold cannot be used to determine the functional energy dependence of the cross section. Further modifications and improvements in the experimental approaches to improve sensitivity will be discussed.

This discussion concentrates on systematics of emission cross sections for the intermediate and high energy projectiles where the applicability of high energy approximations can be tested and the dramatic changes in emission spectra observed as the projectile energies decrease. Since heavy ion interactions are important in many research fields, it is particularly useful to determine where simple methods of cross section scaling may be appropriate.

Book excerpt: "The technique of heavy-ion energy-loss spectrometry has been used to measure excitation cross sections for the (2p5)3s and (2p5)3p electronic configurations of Neon. The incident particles used were H, H+2 and He+ at impact energies from 20-180 keV. The results are compared with previous optical measurements of the emission cross sections of lines from these levels as excited by H+ and He+ impact. Agreement is not good, either in shape or in absolute magnitude for excitation of the (2p5)3s configuration. However, agreement is surprisingly good for excitation of the (2p5)3p configuration. A curve fitting technique has been applied to extract relative singlet-triplet cross sections for levels within the (2p5)3s configuration. Almost no triplet excitation is observed for H+ and H+2 impact. The former is expected while the latter is somewhat surprising. Significant triplet excitation is observed only for He+ impact"--Abstract, leaf ii.

At the same time, the energy shortage on the one hand and the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn on the other have increased the national awareness of the important applications of plasma physics to energy production and to the understanding of our space environment. In magnetic confinement fusion, this period has seen the attainment 13 of a Lawson number nTE of 2 x 10 cm -3 sec in the Alcator tokamaks at MIT; neutral-beam heating of the PL T tokamak at Princeton to KTi = 6. 5 keV; increase of average ß to 3%-5% in tokamaks at Oak Ridge and General Atomic; and the stabilization of mirror-confined plasmas at Livermore, together with injection of ion current to near field-reversal conditions in the 2XIIß device. Invention of the tandem mirror has given magnetic confinement a new and exciting dimension. New ideas have emerged, such as the compact torus, surface-field devices, and the EßT mirror-torus hybrid, and some old ideas, such as the stellarator and the reversed-field pinch, have been revived. Radiofrequency heat ing has become a new star with its promise of dc current drive. Perhaps most importantly, great progress has been made in the understanding of the MHD behavior of toroidal plasmas: tearing modes, magnetic Vll Vlll islands, and disruptions.
