Book Feminine Conquest

Download or read book Feminine Conquest written by Zukame and published by Zukame. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conquests are men's business, yet in the Conquest of Mexico there is a woman at its center. Five centuries after the Spaniards' arrival to Mexico, most of its people still believe the Spanish conquistadors conquered the Aztec Empire. British Boudicca and French Joan of Arc fought against foreign invaders; but in Mexico, a Native woman―Malintzin, fought on the side of the foreign conquerors. This anomalous phenomenon has been grossly overlooked by historians, who have allowed Hernán Cortés to steal the show while omitting the credits to Malintzin who directed it. In his first book, Zukame explores one of the greatest omissions in the study of this historical event―the immense contribution of Mesoamerican women in the overthrow of the Aztec Empire and subsequent imposition of Spanish rule. In this book, the author relies on scientific studies as well as on his personal observations of the living conditions in Mexico today. More than just a history book, Feminine Conquest, offers the reader a distinct manner of observing not just historical events but the very nature of reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book began as a venture to collect official and unofficial documents relating to the interval of American military rule. There proved to be thousands, the writings of Presidents, executive officers, and congressmen, naval and military personnel, governors, settlers, and citizens-routine, familiar, wheedling, seductive, blustering, commanding. As the quantity grew, they seemed eager to be heard. But the documents exhibit the traits of their makers. Containing neither the whole truth nor nothing but the truth, they offer many-sided versions of what people believed or wanted others to accept; they must be taken with a grain of salt. Long, sometimes garbled, and always incomplete, the record requires assessment, a referee to appraise the evidence and form his own imperfect conclusions. And any curious or dissenting reader may, by consulting the numerous cited sources, make his own interpretations. References, whenever possible, have been made to materials in some printed form, leading an inquirer to a vast array of historical evidence. Everything herein happened, or so the record tells, and if an assumption has been made, it is that men, issues, and events can be interesting in their own right, without exaggeration. "To exaggerate," a knowing urban child recently observed, "means you put in something to make it more exciting" (Los Angeles Times, Dec. 10, 1978).

Book Conquest by Law

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lindsay G. Robertson
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2005-08-25
  • ISBN : 0199881995
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Conquest by Law written by Lindsay G. Robertson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1823, Chief Justice John Marshall handed down a Supreme Court decision of monumental importance in defining the rights of indigenous peoples throughout the English-speaking world. At the heart of the decision for Johnson v. M'Intosh was a "discovery doctrine" that gave rights of ownership to the European sovereigns who "discovered" the land and converted the indigenous owners into tenants. Though its meaning and intention has been fiercely disputed, more than 175 years later, this doctrine remains the law of the land. In 1991, while investigating the discovery doctrine's historical origins Lindsay Robertson made a startling find; in the basement of a Pennsylvania furniture-maker, he discovered a trunk with the complete corporate records of the Illinois and Wabash Land Companies, the plaintiffs in Johnson v. M'Intosh. Conquest by Law provides, for the first time, the complete and troubling account of the European "discovery" of the Americas. This is a gripping tale of political collusion, detailing how a spurious claim gave rise to a doctrine--intended to be of limited application--which itself gave rise to a massive displacement of persons and the creation of a law that governs indigenous people and their lands to this day.

Book 1016 The Danish Conquest of England

Download or read book 1016 The Danish Conquest of England written by Per Ullidtz and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mention the conquest of England, and the answer is 1066 and William the Conqueror, but fifty years earlier, England was conquered by Cnut the Dane. It came as no surprise. His father, the Danish King Sven Forkbeard, had done the same thing in 1013, but when he died shortly afterwards the country reverted to King Aethelred Unred. But the story goes back much further than that. The populations around the shores of the North Sea are surprisingly homogeneous genetically, and have been so since the Neolithic era. Exchanges of goods, culture, and wives across the North Sea have been going on for millennia, and the oldest Anglo-Saxon poems, like Beowulf, tell of Danish kings in a glorious past. Relations were not always peaceful, and at the end of the eighth century they developed into a religious war. When Christian missionaries destroyed heathen idols and temples, the pagan Vikings responded by pillaging churches and monasteries and trampling on holy relics. It took several hundred years before the last pagans were converted, and in the meantime they had settled on the shores of England and France, in Danelaw and Normandy. Cnut believed that he had a claim on the English throne through his forefathers in the Danelaw and through Edward the Elder, but his North Sea Empire inaugurated the most prosperous and peaceful decades of medieval English history. It crumbled quickly upon his dead, and gave way to a superior Continental culture, but it still has some appeal today, with its simplicity and naivety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost sixty years ago, the Mennonite missionary team working in the Argentine Chaco decided to look for ways to be effective in their ministry while being faithful to Jesus’ lifestyle and teaching. They left behind paternalistic models and “conquering” methods and were liberated from the mindset of forming a denominational church. As a result, they found an alternative missionary style of walking alongside those they worked with, giving priority to the integrity of the local people. “Mission Without Conquest” is a historical narrative of how the Toba Qom people of the Argentine Chaco followed Jesus’ way from the time of their conversion until the formation of an autochthonous church. This book embodies a new way to approach the church’s missionary task – a way that makes the mission of Jesus Christ the paradigm for Christian mission until his return.
