Book Invitation To Algebra A Resource Compendium For Teachers Advanced Undergraduate Students And Graduate Students In Mathematics

Download or read book Invitation To Algebra A Resource Compendium For Teachers Advanced Undergraduate Students And Graduate Students In Mathematics written by Vlastimil Dlab and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a compendium style account of a comprehensive mathematical journey from Arithmetic to Algebra. It contains material that is helpful to graduate and advanced undergraduate students in mathematics, university and college professors teaching mathematics, as well as some mathematics teachers teaching in the final year of high school. A successful teacher must know more than what a particular course curriculum asks for. A number of topics that are missing in present-day textbooks, and which may be attractive to students at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level in mathematics, for example, continued fractions, arithmetic progressions of higher order, complex numbers in plane geometry, differential schemes, path semigroups and path algebras, have been carefully presented. This reflects the aim of the book to attract students to mathematics.

Book excerpt: Accessible Algebra: 30 Modules to Promote Algebraic Reasoning, Grades 7-10 is for any pre-algebra or algebra teacher who wants to provide a rich and fulfilling experience for students as they develop new ways of thinking through and about algebra.' The book includes 30 lessons that identify a focal domain and standard in algebra, then lays out the common misconceptions and challenges students may face as they work to investigate and understand problems.' Authors Anne Collins and Steven Benson conferred with students in real classrooms as the students explained what problem-solving strategies they were using or worked to ask the right questions that would lead them to a deeper understanding of algebra. Each scenario represents actual instances of an algebra classroom that demonstrate effective teaching methods, real-life student questions, and conversations about the problems at hand. 'Accessible Algebra' works for students at every level. In each lesson, there are sections on how to support struggling students, as well as ways to challenge students who may need more in-depth work. There are also numerous additional resources, including research articles and classroom vignettes.

Book Advanced Algebra for Teachers Revised Edition

Download or read book Advanced Algebra for Teachers Revised Edition written by Kirthi Premadasa and published by . This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secondary school math teachers in several states are required to successfully pass state exams in Algebra. Often, these exams require a wide spectrum of knowledge ranging from high school Algebra to Abstract Algebra. The book, "Advanced Algebra for Teachers," is uniquely designed to cover this variety of topics in a user friendly manner. It is currently used by secondary school teachers in California who are training for the Algebra subtest of the CSET exam, but the text should be ideally suited for schoolteachers nationwide hoping to acquire a similar body of knowledge. The topics are presented through worked out examples, in the simplest language possible. Consequently these concepts can be introduced to readers who may not be the traditional audience for this type of content. Another salient feature of the book is that the examples and exercise sets cover skill levels from basic concepts to more difficult problems gently exposing the reader to the intensity present in most certification exams. In more practical terms, the text assists the practicing teacher with a critical overview of a comprehensive algebra curricular from basic algebra to abstract algebra. Dr. Kirthi Premadasa (PhD., Purdue University) is an Assistant Professor in the Mathematics Department at University of Wisconsin Marathon County. Dr. Premadasa has more than seventeen years of mathematics teaching and has taught the entire spectrum of undergraduate algebra. His current research is in undergraduate mathematics education with an emphasis on student bottlenecks in solving algebra word problems and integration applications. He was one of the two Wisconsin Teaching Fellows selected from all thirteen campuses of the UW Colleges in all disciplines in 2010. Dr. Rajee Amarasinghe (Ph.D., Indiana University) is an Associate Professor in the Mathematics Department at California State University, Fresno where he teaches mathematics classes for perspective elementary and secondary school teachers. Also, he directs and conducts local and international professional development workshops for mathematics teachers. Dr. Oscar Vega is an Assistant Professor in the mathematics department at California State University, Fresno. He received his PhD in Mathematics in 2006 from the University of Iowa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential understanding of the uses and practices of algebra remain out of reach for many students. In this book, award-winning researcher Dr. Nicole Fonger addresses the issue of how to support all learners to experience algebra as meaningful. In a highly visual approach, the book details four research-based lenses with examples from 9th-grade algebra classrooms: (1) students’ algebraic reasoning and representing; (2) goal-directed classroom practices with technology; (3) culturally and historically responsive algebra literacy; and (4) teachers’ journeys toward antiracism. The author makes connections among research in algebra education; teaching algebra; and leading ambitious, equitable, and antiracist visions for algebra education. By the End of This Book, You Will: Learn how to support students to fluently reason and represent expressions, equations, and functions.Learn how to design algebra lessons that are culturally and historically responsive to students’ experiences and social justice issues.Learn to use sketch notes to reflect on and communicate complex ideas in teaching and learning algebra.Have a set of tools for guiding the design of instruction to support meaningful algebra learning for all students.

Book Second Handbook of Research on Mathematics Teaching and Learning

Download or read book Second Handbook of Research on Mathematics Teaching and Learning written by Frank K. Lester and published by IAP. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 1380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The audience remains much the same as for the 1992 Handbook, namely, mathematics education researchers and other scholars conducting work in mathematics education. This group includes college and university faculty, graduate students, investigators in research and development centers, and staff members at federal, state, and local agencies that conduct and use research within the discipline of mathematics. The intent of the authors of this volume is to provide useful perspectives as well as pertinent information for conducting investigations that are informed by previous work. The Handbook should also be a useful textbook for graduate research seminars. In addition to the audience mentioned above, the present Handbook contains chapters that should be relevant to four other groups: teacher educators, curriculum developers, state and national policy makers, and test developers and others involved with assessment. Taken as a whole, the chapters reflects the mathematics education research community's willingness to accept the challenge of helping the public understand what mathematics education research is all about and what the relevance of their research fi ndings might be for those outside their immediate community.
