Book What Triggers Market Jitters

Download or read book What Triggers Market Jitters written by Graciela Laura Kaminsky and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Movements in stock prices in East Asia during the crisis in 1997-98 were triggered by both local and neighbor-country news. Having the highest impact was news about agreements with international organizations and credit rating agencies. But some changes seem to have been driven by herd instincts in the market itself, including overreactions to bad news. In the chaotic financial environment of East Asia in 1997-98, daily changes in stock prices of as much as 10 percent became commonplace. Kaminsky and Schmukler analyze what type of news moved the market in those days of extreme market jitters. They find that movements are triggered by both local and neighbor-country news. News about agreements with international organizations and credit rating agencies have the most weight. Some of those large changes in stock prices, however, cannot be explained by any apparent substantial news but seem to be driven by herd instincts in the market itself. On average, the one-day market rallies are sustained while the largest one-day losses are recovered - suggesting that investors overreact to bad news.

Book Investors Trading Behaviour and Stock Market Volatility During Crisis Periods

Download or read book Investors Trading Behaviour and Stock Market Volatility During Crisis Periods written by Guglielmo Maria Caporale and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the impact of investors' buy and sell trades on Korean stock market volatility across two crisis events, the Asian crisis of 1997 and the 2008 global financial crash. We investigate the trading behaviour of domestic vs. foreign and institutional vs. individual investors. Our results suggest that the buy and sell trades have an asymmetric effect on volatility that depends on the type of investor trading and on the phase of the business cycle. Buy orders appear to be more informative than sell orders since they mostly lower volatility in the pre-crisis periods, while sell and post-crisis buy trades affect volatility positively regardless of who trades (institutional or individual investors) and on what information (member, non-member). Most importantly, decomposing total buy and sell trades into trader-type categories reveals that some institutional investors are more informed traders that stabilize the market compared to individuals that always increase volatility. Foreign investors reduce volatility with their purchases and total trading activity in the whole Asian crisis sample, but only in the pre-crisis period before the recent global financial turmoil.

Book Investor Overreaction in Asian and US Stock Markets

Download or read book Investor Overreaction in Asian and US Stock Markets written by Yu-Nan Tai and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored the effectiveness of the contrarian and momentum strategies in the United States stock market-S&P 500 and Chinese stock markets (Taiwan, Hong Kong, & Singapore) both during the 2008 financial crisis and during the pre-crisis period. Additionally, the study examined the similarities and differences between investor behavior (specifically overreaction and underreaction) in western and eastern countries, to assist global investors and fund managers in their decision-making in those regions. The sample period was from May 2003 to October 2012, providing both long-term and short-term analysis and including a non-crisis financial period and a crisis period. This study used an empirical research design and was non-experimental in nature. Results showed that in the short-term, the momentum strategy is significant in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, but not in the S&P 500. Additionally, the momentum strategy is not significant in the financial crisis period in the Asian markets. However, the momentum strategy did provide significant profit in the financial crisis period in the U.S. market. The contrarian strategy is significant in the long-term except in the S&P 500, but it is also not significant in the crisis period.

Book The East Asian Crisis

Download or read book The East Asian Crisis written by Ms.Kalpana Kochhar and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews macroeconomic developments during the first year of the crisis in east Asia and draws some preliminary policy lessons. The crisis is rooted in the interaction of large capital inflows and weak private and public sector governance. At the same time, macroeconomic adjustment in these countries has resulted in some surprising outcomes, including severe economic contractions, low inflation, and rapid external adjustment. The lessons for crisis resolution include the importance of tight monetary policy early on for exchange rate stabilization, flexible fiscal policy, and comprehensive structural reform. Crises are avoided by prudent macroeconomic policies, diligent bank supervision, transparent data dissemination, strong governance, and forward-looking policymaking, even in good times.

The commission and the report were implemented after Congress passed an act in 2009 to review and prevent fraudulent activity. Book How Does the Asian Crisis Affect the Interdependencies between Major Financial Markets in Asia and the Us

Download or read book How Does the Asian Crisis Affect the Interdependencies between Major Financial Markets in Asia and the Us written by Leo H. Chan and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical studies support evidence of major financial markets affecting minor markets. During the Asian Crisis, however, major markets, such as the US and Japan, reacted to the problems in smaller markets such as Hong Kong and Singapore. In this paper we apply a VAR model to capture the changes in the dynamic relationship among stock markets in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and the US. A multivariate stochastic volatility model (SVM) is also utilized to study the correlations in volatility among these markets to determine the impacts of the Crisis. We find strong lead-effect of Hong Kong market returns over the US market returns during the Crisis. Our results also show strong overacting behavior among investors across these markets during the Crisis. We also find that the Crisis period was marked by higher volatilities and stronger spillover effects across these markets.

Book Foreign Equity Flows and the Asian Financial Crisis

Download or read book Foreign Equity Flows and the Asian Financial Crisis written by Michael Barth and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper provides a new perspective on the roles of foreign equity flows in the Asian financial crises of the past two years. It desegregates foreign equity flows to Asian emerging markets over the past several years by type of equity investment and by type of investor, showing that foreign equity investments do not all behave alike. Specifically, the paper distinguishes between three types of foreign investors--mutual funds, pension funds, and hedge funds--and three means by which foreign institutions invest in local stocks--local market investments, international placements and private equity. The paper conclude that international placements and private equity investments were stable sources of finance during the Asian crises. With regard to local equity investments the paper provides a variety of evidence pointing to the conclusion that foreign investors may not have destabilized Asian stock prices: foreign investors in local markets are shown to have investment horizons that are longer than those of domestic investors, to be motivated economic fundamentals, and to have in general suffered significant losses during the crises. The paper however also presents evidence of high influence on local stock markets by foreign investors. Foreign investors are shown to have controlled the majority of free float of most Asian stock markets. Analytical work also shows that foreign investors are market leaders. Hedge funds are found to have gained significantly during the Asian financial crisis. These evidence argue strongly for the development of a domestic capital markets and domestic institutional investor base.

Book The Korean Financial Crisis of 1997 A Strategy of Financial Sector Reform

Download or read book The Korean Financial Crisis of 1997 A Strategy of Financial Sector Reform written by Mr.Angel J. Ubide and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After years of strong performance, Korea’s economy entered a crisis in 1997, owing largely to structural problems in its financial and corporate sectors. These problems emerged in the second half of that year, when the capital inflows that had helped finance Korea’s growth were reversed, as foreign investors—reeling from losses in other Southeast Asian economies—decided to reduce their exposure to Korea. This paper focuses on the sources of the crisis that originated in the financial sector, the measures taken to deal with it, and the evolution of key banking and financial variables in its aftermath.
