Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Railways: A Financial and Commercial Survey The railway managers of the nineteenth century were continually raising new problems which became more and more difficult as the traffic increased in complexity. As a rule they were much easier to raise than to settle. Very few of them were ever met in a broad, comprehensive spirit and finally disposed of. They were temporised with and bandied about from one Select Committee to another, or from one Royal Commission to another. So they passed on from generation to generation, and some of them are as much alive to-day as they were seventy years ago. Our parliamentary debates on railway questions are crowded with the ghosts of last-century problems still unsolved. The railwaymen of to-day have these problems to wrestle with as well as their own. Book American Railways as Investments

Download or read book American Railways as Investments written by Carl Snyder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Railways as Investments: A Detailed and Comparative Analysis of All the Leading Railways, From the Investor's Point, of View; With an Introductory Chapter on the Methods of Estimating Railway Values The aim Of this work is to provide the general investor, the banker and the investment broker with the means whereby he may judge intelligently and readily, so far as the accessible facts will permit, Of the value Of the securities Of the different railroads passed under review. The volume covers the Operations Of nearly miles Of road or about 90% of the total for the country. More especial attention, and detail, has naturally been given to the more important lines and systems, on the theory that they present greater opportunities for safe investment, greater stabil ity, wider fluctuations in value and therefore larger Opportuni ties for profit, with less liability to suffer from the minor accidents Of trade reverses, manipulation or bad management. At the end Of each analysis or review, conclusions and opinions are offered, but only for what they are worth; that is to say, all the material facts upon which these conclusions are based have been given in full. The details, the figures, the tables are there; the investor may therefore judge for himself as to the validity Of the conclusions reached. The inductions offered are suggestions and nothing more. The aim has been to provide the broadest possible basis of judgment, to Offer the largest perspective, to cut out tha which is evanescent, not to look at last year's results or this year's conditions merely, but to consider what has been done through a series Of years, and under varying conditions. Only in this wise is it possible to frame any intelligent Opinion of the future. Tendencies do not rapidly change. Established roads do not suddenly become great earners; they do not as a rule radically change their policies, save under a radical change Of ownership. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Railways The greater part of the matter contained in the following pages appeared in a series of thirteen articles published in The Times between January 5 and June 5, 1903, under the heading of "American Railways," the facts given having been collected during a four months' tour of the United States, made in the winter of 1902-3, and representing a total of about 9000 miles of railway travelling on the American continent. For the purposes of the present work, however, I have considerably expanded a number of the original articles, and have added several fresh ones - such as "On the Cars," "In the Rockies," "A Mining Camp Railway in Colorado," and "The Santa Fe Trail" - together with sections given in Chapter XIX., "Miscellaneous," under the headings: "The Capture of the Small Shareholder," "The Suburban Traffic Problem at Chicago," "Luggage and Parcels," "The Policy of Combination," "Ton-Mileage Statistics," and "Promotions of Staff in Railway Service." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Railways These irregularities might have been corrected, to some extent, by the companies applying premiums they had received on issuing new stocks, towards the reduction or elimination of the outstanding items in their property or con struction accounts; but no such course has apparently ever been adopted by the companies. Without receiving. Any consideration for doing so, the companies, quite voluntarily, increased the amount of their liabilities by 44 millions so manipulating their accounts, that debenture holders were credited with about 20, in addition to every 100, which had been advanced by them. The ordinary stockholders, moreover, agreed between themselves, by a process known as duplication, to make it appear to the world, that, additional sums had been paid in cash, upon every 100, which had been originally paid, or credited, on their stocks. This watering process. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book British Railways

Download or read book British Railways written by Hugh Munro Ross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Railways: Their Organisation, and Management This little book aims at providing for the general, non-technical reader an account of the railways of the country, which may enable him to understand something of the conditions in which they work, the difficulties they encounter, and the problems they have to solve. It is not to be regarded as a text book oi railway management, and considerations of space have rendered it necessary altogether to omit some topics that might have been treated and to dismiss others with only a brief reference. Nor is it a statistical manual, the figures contained in its pages having been introduced not for their own sake, but simply for purposes of illustration and com parison. Book Priorities for investment in the railways

Download or read book Priorities for investment in the railways written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Transport Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The railways in Britain are currently experiencing historically high levels of investment. Network Rail, the monopoly owner and operator of Britain's fixed rail infrastructure, is investing about £35 billion in the railway network between 2009 and 2014. In this inquiry the Transport Committee assess the value of further investment to enhance Britain's railway network and - within the context of likely public spending reductions following the recession - to identify essential rail investment priorities for the future. Investment in rail enhancements can positively benefit the economy through reducing journey times, providing access to employment, contributing to the regeneration of local areas and, in the short-term, providing much-needed construction jobs. Failure to invest now to enhance the network, and to alleviate capacity constraints, will only damage the prosperity of the railways in the long term. The Committee believes the Government should continue to focus on enhancing the network, promoting integration of transport modes and reacting positively to proposals to develop new rail lines, or reopening old ones, serving communities with little or no access to the rail network. The report sets out which needs and schemes the Committee thinks should be considered high priorities in the medium to long-term.

Book How to Analyze Railroad Reports Classic Reprint

Download or read book How to Analyze Railroad Reports Classic Reprint written by John Moody and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Analyze Railroad Reports The first question usually considered by one who contemplates investing money on a partnership basis in a business enterprise is the possibility of expansion in earning power. Few persons will knowingly place their funds, on such a basis, in any undertaking which is not currently earning a satisfactory return, and only a limited number will consider going into a paying business unless they are convinced that there are possibilities of growth and expansion ahead, in the amount of profits to be secured. The hope that his money, thus invested, will earn from year to year an increasing return, is usually the motive that induces a man to place his capital at risk on the same general basis that the active, or work ing, partner gives his time, his labor and the fruits Of his training or experience. The stockholder in any corporate undertaking is in precisely the same position as the investing partner. Whether the enterprise happens to be a steam railroad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case for Railway Nationalisation For some years past a number of people have pointed out that the incompetent and amateur way in which the railroads of the United Kingdom were run was becoming a menace to the national welfare, and that the whole fabric of railway finance was becoming so top heavy that its collapse was merely a question of time; and the only remedy that these observers could see was that the State should take over consolidate, and operate as one great undertaking the entire railway system of the country, as it already does with the Post Office and allied services.
