Book excerpt: Regulatory institutions and the regimes that they establish have a significant impact on the environment for new investment in utility and infrastructure industries. This is especially true when the investment is provided by the private sector. This book examines the common approaches that have been adopted by regulators over the last 10 to 15 years and finds that the different techniques that were developed have had varying levels of success, and were often only developed to respond to a particular situation-large investments with uncertain timing, an uncertain volume of smaller investments, etc. It provides assessments of the various approaches which are complemented by a set of short case studies. It also provides some guidance on when to use the different approaches that will be beneficial for regulators in new agencies.

Book Investment Decision Making by Swiss Utilities Expected Vs Realised Returns

Download or read book Investment Decision Making by Swiss Utilities Expected Vs Realised Returns written by Saskia Bovier and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of global warming and the ongoing transition to cleaner energy, electricity utility companies play an important role. Indeed, governments all over the globe have been implementing a series of measures to drive consumers and producers towards greener behaviours. In terms of their own asset allocations, how do utilities adapt themselves to this new investment climate? As a small country, Switzerland only has limited growth capacity for the deployment of wind technology. From that perspective, many Swiss utilities have invested in wind turbines abroad over the past decades. Furthermore, gas-fired power plants, with lower carbon footprint, tend to be seen as a good alternative to conventional fossil power generation, a technology in which Swiss companies have also recently made foreign investments. In order to examine the investment-decision making of Swiss utilities and determine the related risks, the present work aims to estimate the return companies expect when investing in new wind or gas-fired installations. Moreover, to compare the profitability of each technology, the realised returns are computed as well. The results show a preference for wind technology in general, in comparison to gas. Furthermore, the conditions in Italy are very suitable for attracting investors.
