Book Dynamics of Class and Stratification in Poland 1945 2015

Download or read book Dynamics of Class and Stratification in Poland 1945 2015 written by Irina Tomescu-Dubrow and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about long-term changes to class and inequality in Poland. Drawing upon major social surveys, the team of authors from the Polish Academy of Sciences offer the rare comprehensive study of important changes to the social structure from the communist era to the present. The core argument is that, even during extreme societal transformations, key features of social life have long-lasting, stratifying effects. The authors analyse the core issues of inequality research that best explain “who gets what and why:” social mobility, status attainment and their mechanisms, with a focus on education, occupation, and income. The transition from communist political economy to liberal democracy and market capitalism offers a unique opportunity for scholars to understand how people move from one stratifi cation regime to the next. There are valuable lessons to be learned from linking past to present. Classic issues of class, stratification, mobility, and attainment have endured decades of radical social change. These concepts remain valid even when society tries to eradicate them.

Book Social Stratification in Poland Eight Empirical Studies

Download or read book Social Stratification in Poland Eight Empirical Studies written by Kazimierz M. Slomczynski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American press and American television news have been filled with stories from Gdansk, Warsaw, Krakow, Lódz, and other Polish cities and towns. The names of a number of Polish leaders have become almost as familiar to Americans as the names of their own leaders, and the word " Solidarity" has acquired an important new meaning for Americans as well as Poles. The editor's identify that this interest of the American public has not been matched by corresponding interest from American sociologists, stating that Polish society is seldom mentioned either in major scholarly journals or in the textbooks written for students. This collection of studies seeks to address some of this issue, looking at works and the systems in Poland since 1956.

Book The Polish Road from Socialism The Economics Sociology and Politics of Transition

Download or read book The Polish Road from Socialism The Economics Sociology and Politics of Transition written by Walter D. Connor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What the contributors to this volume offer is neither a romantic version of the course of Polish history nor a jubilant account of the recovery of national independence and political choice. Rather, they offer a variety of tough-minded analytic perspectives on what comes when "the party's over" - not just the PSPR but the celebration marking its downfall. They focus on Poland's movement toward an internationally competitive market economy, a political democracy in which plural interests compete, and the constitution of a civil society that both tolerates and ameliorates conflict. The multidisciplinary contributors include Jan Mujzel, Keith Crane, Benjamin Slay, Kazimierz Poznanski; Jan Bossak, Wojciech Bienkowski, Wlodzimierz Wesolowski, Edmund Wnuk-Lipinski, Adam Sarapata, Andrzej Sicinski, Piotr Lukasiewicz, Krzysztof Nowak, David S. Mason, Adrzej Rychard, Krzysztof Jasiewicz, Jack Bielasiak, Janusz Reykowski, Stanislaw Gebethner, Miroslawa Marody, Edmund Mokrzycki, and Michael D. Kennedy.

Book The Kalamari Union Middle Class in East and West

Download or read book The Kalamari Union Middle Class in East and West written by Markku Kivinen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume asks: are new social classes in the making in eastern Europe? Are class issues withering away? How do different classes organize their lives, what kind of strategies do they adopt in East and West. Markku Kivinen brings Eastern Europe into the class debate. Recent sociological discussions have touched upon questions of class in Eastern Europe only very provisionally. On the other hand, old analyses of social stratification under conditions of 'actually existed socialism' are no longer relevant in the current situation. This book analyses processes of class relations in Eastern Europe from new theoretical vantage-points, using up-to-date empirical data. Under socialism, power was said to be vested in the working class. However, there was a constant tension between the 'holy proletariat' and the real life of the working class. Today, all political forces in Eastern Europe; leftist and liberal alike, are hankering for the middle class. This book explores the real processes in both East and West. This leads to more concrete political and even moral issues. The new 'sacred middle class' is challenged. The contributors adopt several conceptual approaches and perspectives which enter into a fruitful exchange in this book.

Book Between Plan and Market

Download or read book Between Plan and Market written by Raimo Blom and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Baltic states continue to develop into free market economies, these nation's new legal and political institutions are still in a process of formation. Political organization is in a state of flux, labor relations and labor markets are practically nonexistent. These unusual conditions of change present challenging problems to the sociologist. Unique in approach, this book emphasizes techniques for merging systemic, social and communal levels of analysis, providing a coherent view in a difficult area of research. It is argued that cyclical, rather than linear concepts of change, are the more fruitful in evaluating mechanisms of social transformation.

Book Class Structure and Social Mobility in Poland

Download or read book Class Structure and Social Mobility in Poland written by Kazimierz M. Slomczynski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 1978. How far have sociologists working in countries commonly designated as "socialist" gone in studying the class structure and social consciousness of their own societies? What kinds of questions have they posed, and what is the degree of technical sophistication applied in answering them? Western sociologists interested in the fate of their discipline in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union have long recognized that the answers to these questions will differ substantially depending upon which particular socialist society one has in mind. The selection from Polish sociological literature brought together here by Stomczynski and Krauze should help to answer the questions raised and provide readers with the opportunity to assess the quality of Polish sociological studies in the areas of class structure, social mobility, and class consciousness.
