Fisch., is a fungus disease originally introduced to British Columbia from Asia via Europe. It attacks all white pines, both native and introduced. It is particularly devastating to native pines because they have little or no resistance to the fungus. For many years, western white pine, a high-value native species with desirable wood and silvicultural properties, was not managed because of this disease. Research in British Columbia has demonstrated how wild stands can be managed and has provided blister rust resistant clones for seed orchards. This report summarizes white pine disease management and how resistant clones were identified for reforestation programs in British Columbia.

Book excerpt: The behavior of white pine blister rust at Mountain Home State Demonstration Forest and surrounding areas in the southern Sierra Nevada of California indicates that the epidemic has not yet stabilized and that the most likely prognosis is a pandemic on white pines in this region within the next few decades. The impact on sugar pines, from young regeneration to old growth, already has been severe in some areas, and silvicultural control measures have been largely ineffective. An operational genetic program, based on selection of seed parents carrying a major resistance gene, is described that is simple and effective. This program will be useful in maintaining sugar pine as a crop species in artificial regeneration for at least one rotation, and in preserving the genetic integrity of sugar pine populations in jeopardy from the rust.

Fisch. continues to cause high levels of mortality and threatens ecosystems and plantations. Studies on genetic resistance to C. ribicola are described in papers from different regions of the world. Use of P. strobus as an exotic species in Europe and Russia and corresponding problems with white pine blister rust are discussed in several papers. Other papers focus on examining and exploiting patterns of genetic variation of different species.
