Book Polysaccharide Based Graft Copolymers

Download or read book Polysaccharide Based Graft Copolymers written by Susheel Kalia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned experts give all essential aspects of the techniques and applications of graft copolymers based on polysaccharides. Polysaccharides are the most abundant natural organic materials and polysaccharide based graft copolymers are of great importance and widely used in various fields. Natural polysaccharides have recently received more attention due to their advantages over synthetic polymers by being non-toxic, biodegradable and available at low cost. Modification of polysaccharides through graft copolymerization improves the properties of polysaccharides. Grafting is known to improve the characteristic properties of the backbones. Such properties include water repellency, thermal stability, flame resistance, dye-ability and resistance towards acid-base attack and abrasion. Polysaccharides and their graft copolymers find extensive applications in diversified fields. Applications of modified polysaccharides include drug delivery devices, controlled release of fungicides, selective water absorption from oil-water emulsions, purification of water etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive, truly one-stop reference discusses monomers, methods, stereochemistry, industrial applications and more. Chapters written by internationally acclaimed experts in their respective fields cover both basic principles and up-to-date information, ranging from the controlled ring-opening polymerization methods to polymer materials of industrial interest. All main classes of monomers including heterocyclics, cyclic olefins and alkynes, and cycloalkanes, are discussed separately as well as their specificities regarding the ring-opening polymerization techniques, the mechanisms, the degree of control, the properties of the related polymers and their applications. The two last chapters are devoted to the implementation of green chemistry in ring-opening polymerization processes. Of much interest to chemists in academia and industry.

Book Radical mediated Modification of Polyolefins Investigation of the Synthesis of Graft Copolymers

Download or read book Radical mediated Modification of Polyolefins Investigation of the Synthesis of Graft Copolymers written by Michael Steven Kaufman and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A range of strategies exist for the production of polyolefin block copolymers with well-defined morphologies for the compatibilization of immiscible blends; however, high sensitivity to impurities and use of expensive transition-metal catalysts limit their economic viability. An alternative method is the solvent-free coupling of dislike polymers using peroxides and multifunctional coagents. This technique, however, does not distinguish between a blend of gelled homopolymers and the intended copolymer. The use of a solution-based approach, like the one described in this report, for the radical-mediated coupling of polyolefins with dislike polymers allows for the full characterization of the copolymer without the formation of gel. A one- and two-step synthesis for the coupling of two homopolymers in solution is demonstrated using triallyl trimesate. The one-step approach produced a copolymer in low yields due to the differences in reactivity between the homopolymers. The two-step synthesis consisted of the solvent-free grafting of the coagent to the less reactive polymer, followed by coupling in solution with the other polymer. Though this technique demonstrated improved yields over that of the one-step approach, the overall yields were limited due to the dilution effects of the high solvent levels needed for comiscibility. The coupling of polyethylene with poly(ethylene oxide) had a maximum graft yield of 9.5%, whereas the coupling between polypropylene and a thermoplastic polyolefin elastomer was negligible. It was found that the grafting of allylic ester coagents to polyethylene results in an uneven graft distribution. Given enough peroxide and coagent, the material will reach its gel point where there is a small, high molecular weight population with a disproportionately high graft content, while the remaining chains contained a modest concentration of bound coagent. Furthermore, a survey of the effectiveness of several common coagents in the radical-mediated crosslinking of polyethylene was investigated where it was found that allylic coagents had a greater contribution to the crosslink density of the resin than vinyl coagents.
