Book excerpt: ``Spectroscopy of Crystals Containing Rare Earth Ions'' contains chapters on some key problems selected from a broad range of spectroscopic studies of RE-activated solids including both crystalline and glassy materials. Progress in crystal field theory is surveyed, an area which is basic to our understanding of the energy levels. The treatment of dynamical properties includes studies of coherence phenomena in isolated ions, energy transfer between ions and co-operative phenomena associated with ion-ion and ion-lattice interactions. In addition, the role of electron spins and nuclear spins is studied by light scattering and double resonance techniques. The presence of inhomogeneous broadening of spectral lines is observed and studied in many contexts, leading to new insights into general problems of the disordered state. Considerable attention is devoted to describing new experimental techniques whose development is of prime importance for progress in the spectroscopy of RE-activated solids. Many of these rely on the development and application of tunable lasers. At the moment this is a very active field of spectroscopy with more exciting developments likely to occur in the future.

Book excerpt: In LaBGeO5, low temperature Combined Excitation Emission Spectroscopy (CEES) revealed that erbium incorporates into both glass-ceramics and laser-induced crystals-in-glass in predominantly one type of environment (site). However, other minority sites were also observed. The energy levels of the primary site were quantified. The fluorescence characteristics of the erbium ions in any site in the laser-induced crystals were found to be only weakly influenced by the irradiation conditions during growth. On the other hand, a hidden parameter, potentially boron deficiency-related defects, resulted in a significant change of the relative numbers of erbium ions incorporating at the minority sites compared to at the primary site.

Book excerpt: Within the limitations of the ionic approxima tion, different contributions to the crystalline electric field parameters arising from the orbit als of the rare earth ions are calculated with particular reference to the Pr(3) ion in PrCl3. Rare earth orbitals affect the crystalline elec tric field in three different ways arising from (1) multipole electric moments of the f-electrons in the externally impressed crystalline poten tial, (2) induced moments on the closed S, p and d shells caused by the surrounding charges, and (3) shielding of the external crystal field at the 4f electrons by the distorted orbitals. Gen eral expression for the shielding for any crystal potential term has been derived and is shown to be independent of m value. The nuclear anti shielding factor is calculated for the Pr(3) ion and on the basis of point charge value of crystal potential the expected quadrupolar fre quency of n.m.r. lines is evaluated for La(3) in LaCl3.
