Book Soviet Research on the Transport of Intense Relativistic Electron Beams Through High pressure Air

Download or read book Soviet Research on the Transport of Intense Relativistic Electron Beams Through High pressure Air written by Nikita Wells and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet research on the propagation of intense relativistic electron beams (IREB) through fairly high-pressure air (pressure range 0.1 to 760 Torr) since the early 1970s has included the study of the plasma channel created by the passage of the electron beam through air, the resistive hose instability and its effect on beam propagation, the effect of self-fields, current enhancement, gas expansion, return currents, inherent beam energy spread, and other factors. This report covers Soviet developments in IREB propagation through air where the beam is not focused by external magnetic fields. The information was obtained from Soviet open-source publications with emphasis given to the last ten years of beam propagation in the Soviet Union. The volume of papers published on this subject in recent years indicates a significant increase in Soviet research in this area.

Book Investigation of the Interaction of High Current Relativistic Electron Beams with Electromagnetic Fields

This book was released on 1983 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results obtained in the investigation of high current relativistic electron beams produced by explosive electron eMission from the flare cathode plasma of a high voltage, cold-cathode, field-emission diode are reported. In addition, the production of high power (~100kW) microwave radiation through the interaction of such beams with the natural modes of a resonant cavity is reported. A Marx bank generator was used to excite a hollow cylindrical cathode stalk producing diode currents of the order of 1 kA. A fraction (d"5%) of the diode current was transmitted through a thin anode mesh to produce a relativistic electron beam drifting in a low pressure (2 æ torr) region. Diode voltage pulse widths of typically one microsecond were observed with anode-cathode (A-K) gap spacings of 1.5mm to 50mm being employed. The thermal expansion of the cathode plasma resulted in a time dependent diode impedance and measurements of this impedance for varying initial A-K gap settings illustrated a space-charge limited current-voltage characteristic. A quasi-static magnetic field, produced by a pulsed solenoidal coil, was used to magnetise the vacuum drift space in which the beam propagated. The interaction of the relativistic beam with the magnetic field produced high power microwave radiation at X-band and Q-band frequencies. The most prominent feature of this interaction was the existence of sharp "resonant" field values where radiation ocurred. This self-excited radiation is thought to be due to an interaction between the Doppler-shifted electron cyclotron frequency (ECF) of the electron beam and the natural modes of oscillation of the cavity in which the beam drifts. Observation of radiation at Q-band frequencies would indicate that harmonics of the ECF are also present, albeit at weaker intensities. The magnitude of the collected electron beam current was observed to be dependent upon the strength of the applied magnetic field in which the beam drifted.

Book Relativistic Electron Beam Interaction and Ka Generation in Solid Targets

Download or read book Relativistic Electron Beam Interaction and Ka Generation in Solid Targets written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When fs laser pulses interact with solid surfaces at intensities I?2> 1018 W/cm2?m2, collimated relativistic electron beams are generated. These electrons can be used for producing intense X-radiation (bremsstrahlung or K{sub {alpha}}) for pumping an innershell X-ray laser. The basic concept of such a laser involves the propagation of the electron beam in a material which converts electron energy into appropriate pump photons. Using the ATLAS titanium-sapphire laser at Max-Planck-Institut fuer Quantenoptik, the authors investigate the generation of hot electrons and of characteristic radiation in copper. The laser (200 mJ/130 fs) is focused by means of an off-axis parabola to a diameter of about 10?m. By varying the position of the focus, they measure the copper K{sub {alpha}} - yield as a function of intensity in a range of 1015 to 2 x 1018 W/cm2 while keeping the laser pulse energy constant. Surprisingly, the highest emission is obtained at an intensity of about 1017 W/cm2. However, this result is readily explained by the weak scaling of the hot-electron temperature with intensity. An efficiency of 2 x 10−4 for the conversion of laser energy into copper K{sub {alpha}} is measured. Simulations of the interaction of the hot electrons with the cold target material and the conversion into X-rays are carried out by means of the TIGER/ITS code, a time-independent, coupled electron/photon Monte Carlo transport code. The code calculates the propagation of individual electrons and the generation of photons in cold material. Comparison of the code predictions with the data shows an efficiency of 15% for the generation of electrons with energies in the 100 keV range. A second experiment involves the demonstration of photopumping of an innershell transition in cobalt by the copper radiation. Comparing the emission with the one of nickel, which is not photopumped by copper K{sub {alpha}} photons, an enhancement of more than a factor of two was obtained. An essential part of this experiment is the use of a 1 mm carbon sheet to block the electrons from the material to be photopumped.

Book Interactions of Relativistic Electron Beams with High Atomic Number Plasmas

Download or read book Interactions of Relativistic Electron Beams with High Atomic Number Plasmas written by David Mosher and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A relativistically-correct Fokker-Planck analysis is used to develop fluid equations which model the interaction of relativistic electron beams with high atomic-number plasmas. The derived collision terms can be used to describe scattering and energy in materials ranging from the solid to high-temperature plasma forms. The full set of equations discussed can be used to study electron-beam-initiated pellet-fusion in a completely self-consistent fashion. Specifically, the model is applicable to study of beam pinching in plasma-filled diodes, the interaction of focussed beams with target plasmas, and the transport of high nu/gamma beams in high atomic-number plasmas. Although the general equations are amenable to solution only by computational techniques, analytic solutions describing the time-dependent, collisional interaction of a beam in an infinite plasma, and the one-dimensional equilibrium of a beam in a plasma with applied electric field have been obtained.

Book Experimental Investigation of Beam Plasma Interactions with an Intense Relativistic Electron Beam

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of Beam Plasma Interactions with an Intense Relativistic Electron Beam written by R. E. Hester and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experimental program uses the 4 MeV, 100 ampere, 0.3 microsec pulse width, beam from the Astron accelerator facility to study the interaction of an intense relativistic electron beam with a gas column, usually at a pressure of a few mm Hg. The beam promptly ionizes the gas, generating a plasma column in and around the beam. In this environment measurements were made pertinent to two beam driven instabilities, namely the streaming instability and the hose instability.

Book Beam Wave Interaction in Periodic and Quasi Periodic Structures

Download or read book Beam Wave Interaction in Periodic and Quasi Periodic Structures written by Levi Schächter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past seven years I have been involved in the investigation of high power microwave sources for accelerator and radar applications. As for many others before me, the starting point of this book was a collection of notes on theoretical topics out of the material I had been working on. The notes were the core of a course for graduate students at Cornell University. When I started to prepare these notes it seemed a fairly straight-forward and not very time-consuming task since I had most of the material well organized. Today, three years after the preparation of the first notes, I can only wonder how naive this thought was. Most of my work was oriented towards analytic and quasi-analytic tech niques for the investigation of the interaction of an electron beam with elec tromagnetic waves. These topics are presented in Chaps. 4 and 6. However, for a systematic elaboration of these topics it was necessary to provide some general background, therefore parts of what are today Chaps. 2, 3, and 5 were prepared. Related topics of acceleration concepts were also prepared to some extent but I ran out of time and the material (Chap. 8) was not delivered. In the meantime, various sections of this book were taught at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology and Ben-Gurion University. In the last version I included a discussion on free electron lasers (Chap. 7).
