Book Investigation of the Infrared Absorption Spectra of Selected Aromatic Compounds

Download or read book Investigation of the Infrared Absorption Spectra of Selected Aromatic Compounds written by R. J. Jakobsen and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first step in making assignments of the low-frequency vibrations of para-substituted benzene compounds, complete vibrational assignments of several representative compounds have been started. While assignments have been made for many monosubstituted benzenes, there is need for a complete assignment of a monosubstituted benze with an electron-attracting substituent. To fill this need, an assignment of benzonitrile has been made. Attempts to prepare benzonitrile-d sub 5 were unsuccessful, but are being continued. To confirm the previous assignment of phenol, a sample of phenol-2,4,6-d sub 3 was prepared. A complete vibrational assignment of this molecule was made. Attempts to prepare phenol-d sub 5 are in progress. The assignments of p-cresol and deuterated p-cresols was carried almost to completion. Using the vibrational assignments mentioned above as a foundation, the low-frequency vibrations of 28 para-substituted benzene compounds were assigned as completely as possible. It was shown that certain of the lowfrequency vibrations are sensitive to the nature of the substituent. (Author).

Book A Fundamental Study of the Infrared Spectra of Substituted Aromatic Compounds

Download or read book A Fundamental Study of the Infrared Spectra of Substituted Aromatic Compounds written by W. C Coburn (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attempts were made to correlate the intensities of far IR absorption bands of momo- and disubstituted benzenes with physical properties of the molecules or of their substituents. I NTENSITIES WERE MEASURED FOR MONOSUBSTITUTED BENZENES HAVING THESE SUBSTITUENTS: -F, -Cl, -Br, -I, -CN, CH3, -CF3, -CCl3, -NO2, and -OCH3. Some second-degree correlations but no useful simple correlation were found. Correlations were sought for the intensity of symmetrical 1,4-disubstituted benzenes, a vibration probably not as likely to mix with other modes of its symmetry species. However, the intensities did not correlate well. Complete IR of all 38 compounds studied are catalogued from 4000 to 265 reciprocal cm. (Author).

The text also takes a look at conjugated chromosomes, such as polyenes, enynes, and conjugated azomethines. The selection also evaluates C-aromatic compounds. Topics include benzenoid and hydrocarbons; phenols and their ethers; styrenes and stilbenes; aromatic carbonyl compounds; and nitro compounds. The text also discusses O- and S- heteroaromatic compounds and N-heteroaromatic compounds. The book highlights the applications of spectrophotometry to the analysis of natural products. Topics include formation of derivatives having absorbing chromophores; reactions leading to changes in absorption of added reagents; and analyses involving transformation to products suitable for spectrophotometry. The text is a good reference for readers wanting to explore chromophores.

Book Introduction to Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy

Download or read book Introduction to Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy written by Norman Colthup and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy focuses on the theoretical and experimental aspects of infrared and Raman spectroscopy, with emphasis on detailed group frequency correlations and their vibrational origin. Topics covered include vibrational and rotational spectra, molecular symmetry, methyl and methylene groups, triple bonds and cumulated double bonds, and olefin groups. Aromatic and heteroaromatic rings are also considered, along with carbonyl compounds and molecular vibrations. This book is comprised of 14 chapters and begins with a discussion on the use of Raman and infrared spectroscopy to study the vibrational and rotational frequencies of molecules, paying particular attention to photon energy and degrees of freedom of molecular motion. The quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator and the anharmonic oscillator are described. The next chapter focuses on the experimental techniques and instrumentation needed to measure infrared absorption spectra and Raman spectra. Symmetry is then discussed from the standpoint of the spectroscopist. The following chapters explore the vibrational origin of group frequencies, with an emphasis on mechanical effects; spectra-structure correlations; and the spectra of compounds such as ethers, alcohols, and phenols. The final chapter demonstrates how the frequencies and forms of a nonlinear molecule's normal modes of vibration may be calculated mathematically. This monograph will be a useful resource for spectroscopists and physical scientists.
