Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 36 (thesis year 1991) a total of 11,024 thesis titles from 23 Canadian and 161 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 36 reports theses submitted in 1991, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

For this purpose, fluidization behavior was investigated in different fluidized bed plants having diameters in the range of 0.05 m to 1 m. Pressure fluctuation analysis has been used as an identification tool for the turbulent fluidized bed regime. Different fluidization conditions have been investigated by variation of the fluidized bed properties, the bed material properties, and the gas properties. Based on the measured data, a correlation predicting the transition velocity from bubbling to turbulent fluidization is introduced. To investigate the local flow structure, capacitance probe measurements have been carried out. Using this measurement technique, local solids concentrations and properties of rising bubbles have been determined and analyzed. Finally, an empiric fluid dynamic model was developed using the local measurement data. It is mainly based on capacitance probe measurements and shows high accuracy in comparison to pressure data.

Book excerpt: This project studies the particle pressure, which may be thought of as the force exerted by the particulate phase of a multiphase mixture, independently of that exerted by other phases. The project is divided into two parts, one concerning gas and the other liquid fluidized beds. Previous work on gas fluidized beds had suggested that the particle pressures are generated by bubbling action. Thus, for these gas fluidized bed studies, the particle pressure is measured around single bubbles generated in 2-D fluidized beds, using special probes developed especially for this purpose. Liquid beds are immune from bubbling and the particle pressures proved too small to measure directly. However, the major interest in particle pressures in liquid beds lies in their stabilizing effect that arises from the effective elasticity (the derivative of the particle pressure with respect to the void fraction), they impart to the bed. So rather than directly measure the particle pressure, the authors inferred the values of the elasticity from measurements of instability growth in liquid beds; the inference was made by first developing a generic stability model (one with all the normally modeled coefficients left undetermined) and then working backwards to determine the unknown coefficients, including the elasticity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanism of incipient in gas-solid fluidized bed was investigated by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation - FLUENT version 6.1.18. The Finite Volume Method (FVM) is employed to simulate the complex flow behaviours and heterogenous structure of the gas-solid fluidized bed. Fluidization of Geldart group A B and C particles were simulated. The formation and development of the plumes during incipient fluidization were studied. Different fluidization behaviours of Geldart group A, B and C particles were observed from the contours of gas volume fraction and velocity vector. The observation agreed well with characteristics and behaviours of particles in gas-solid fluidized bed as reported by Geldart (1973). A theory of transient instability adopted with the principles advanced by Tan and Thorpe (1992 and 1996) was proposed to calculate the theoretical transient Rayleigh number (Rac) for the onset of incipient instability. The mobilization of the particles occured once a critical value of transient Rayleigh number was exceeded. Different type of particles exhibit different Rac values. However, the Rac is almost independent of the superficial velocity. The incipient instability of gas-solid fluidized bed was first indentified when the initial stable air diffusion became distorted and particles began to move chaotically. The fluidization parameters such as gas volume fraction, bubble rise velocity and bed pressure drop were used to determine the critical time for onset of incipient instability. The simulated critical onset time (tc) and transient Rayleigh Number (Rac) for the incipient instability of gas-solid fluidized bed were then investigated. A correlation between Rac and permeability was derived, which provides a convenient and simple way to estimate the Rac. The predicted values of Rac were found to agree fairly with the literature data.

Book excerpt: The development of a continuous method for determining changes in particle size and particle size distribution in fluid-bed systems has been studied experimentally. Differential pressure measurements were employed to study the effects of solid particle size on the behavior of gas-fluidized beds. The relevant bed properties are briefly described and a review given of previous work on the study of fluidized-bed quality. It is shown that, within certain limitations, measurements of bed quality can be used to indicate changes in particle size. Gas-bubble velocities, while increasing in proportion to the square root of bubble diameter, are also shown to be dependent on particle size, increasing as the particle size decreases.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to evaluate different pressure probe techniques used to measure the pressure fluctuations in a fluidized bed, to determine the effect of bed parameters on the power spectrum, and to develop a second-order model that describes the spectrums. This work's motivation is to increase the knowledge of fluidized bed pressure phenomena and further the understanding of such fluidized bed research areas as similitude, chemical processes, and pressure diagnostic tools. Pressure fluctuations in a fluidized bed were measured with four pressure probe techniques (static-absolute, dynamic-absolute, static-differential, and dynamic-differential) to determine if differences existed. Testing showed that the absolute and differential techniques produced drastically different results under certain conditions. Comparison of dynamic and static techniques showed that their results were very similar in most situations. The probe arm position was an important testing parameter for all techniques. Pressure data at different bed heights, fluidization velocities, particle sizes/densities, and bed temperatures were taken to determine each parameter's effect on the spectrum. The relationship between bed height and dominant frequency agreed with the literature, but secondary peaks were a function of position in the bed and not affected by bed height. Through the Bode plot, the shifting of frequency peaks with fluidization velocity was documented as a continuous growth. Large-diameter, high-density particles (Group D) exhibited harmonic behavior, while small-diameter, low-density particles (Group A) yielded power spectrums with first-order characteristics. For temperatures up to 512°C, spectrums varied little when velocity ratios were kept nearly constant. Multiple-peak phenomena were associated with bubble coalescence, surface effects, and distributor jetting effects. A second-order model that describes the dominant peak's location and magnitude was developed. An equation for the natural frequency as a function of bed height was developed from experimental data and agreed with the literature. An equation for the damping ratio as a function of bed height was developed from experimental data and agreed with a new theoretical damping ratio presented here. Using these equations, the model was developed such that its output was a function of bed height, and the model qualitatively described the experimental spectrums adequately.

The study assessed the potential for using pressure fluctuations as an indicator of fluidized bed hydrodynamics in both laboratory scale cold-models and industrial scale boilers. Both bubbling fluidized beds and circulating fluidized beds were evaluated. Testing including both cold-flow models and laboratory and industrial-scale combustors operating at elevated temperatures. The study yielded several conclusions on the relationship of pressure fluctuations and hydrodynamic behavior in fluidized beds. The study revealed the importance of collecting sufficiently long data sets to capture low frequency (on the order of 1 Hz) pressure phenomena in fluidized beds. Past research has tended toward truncated data sets collected with high frequency response transducers, which miss much of the spectral structure of fluidized bed hydrodynamics. As a result, many previous studies have drawn conclusions concerning hydrodynamic similitude between model and prototype fluidized beds that is insupportable from the low resolution data presented.
