Book Investigation of Passive Control of Irregular Building Structures Using Bidirectional Tuned Mass Damper

Download or read book Investigation of Passive Control of Irregular Building Structures Using Bidirectional Tuned Mass Damper written by Mariantonieta Gutierrez Soto and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Eight different sets of equations proposed for tuning the parameters of tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are compared using a 5-story building with plan and elevation irregularity, and a 15-story and a 20-story building with plan irregularity subjected to seismic loading. Next, the performance of bidirectional tuned mass damper (BTMD) is compared with that of the pendulum tuned mass damper (PTMD) using three different structures with plan and vertical irregularities ranging in height from 5 to 20 stories and dominant fundamental periods ranging from 0.55 sec to 4.25 sec subjected to Loma Prieta earthquake. It is concluded that BTMD performs consistently better than PTMD for reduction of maximum displacement, acceleration and base shear. BTMD is advantageous over PTMD because it can be tuned for two modes of vibrations and therefore can be used as an alternative to using two TMDs. Then, the effectiveness of BTMD is investigated using a 20-story building structure with plan irregularity subjected to six seismic accelerograms. Finally, the optimal placement of the BTMD is investigated using five different multi-story building structures with plan and elevation irregularities ranging in height from 5 to 20 stories and fundamental periods ranging from 0.55 sec to 4.25 sec subjected to Loma Prieta earthquake.

Book Optimization of Tuned Mass Dampers

Download or read book Optimization of Tuned Mass Dampers written by Gebrail Bekdaş and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a timely book to summarize the latest developments in the optimization of tuned mass dampers covering all classical approaches and new trends including metaheuristic algorithms. Also, artificial intelligence and machine learning methods are included to predict optimum results by skipping long optimization processes. Another difference and advantage of the book are to provide chapters about several types of control types including passive tuned mass dampers, active tuned mass dampers, tuned liquid dampers, tuned liquid column dampers and inerter dampers. Tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are vibration absorber devices used in all types of mechanic systems. The key factor in the design is an effective tuning of TMDs for the desired performance. In practice, several high-rise structures and bridges were designed by including TMDs. Also, TMDs were installed after the construction of the structures after several negative experiences resulting from the disturbing sway of the structures. In optimum design, several closed-form expressions have been proposed for optimum frequency and damping ratio of TMDs, but the exact optimization requires iterative optimization approaches. The current trend is to use evolutionary algorithms and metaheuristic optimization methods to reach the goal.

Book Vibration Control of Structure Using Tuned Mass Friction Dampers

Download or read book Vibration Control of Structure Using Tuned Mass Friction Dampers written by Alka Y. Pisal and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-28 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structural control techniques are widely recognized as an effective means to reduce the response of inadequately damped systems. Its applications ranges from small rotating machines to large civil engineering structures subjected to earthquake or wind loading. Buildings and bridges that have been constructed using structural control shows that it is a valuable and promising engineering tool. The present research work mainly consists of two parts. In the first part of the study, harmonic and seismic response of the single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure to which a passive and semi-active tuned mass friction damper (TMFD) is attached is investigated. Second part of the study focuses on the investigation of effectiveness of multiple tuned mass friction dampers (MTMFD) over a TMFD; here response of the multi-story structure and the bridge with TMFD is compared with response of the same structures with MTMFD. This study is intended to provide an insight to the feasibility of potential application of these devices in vibration control of structures and bridge.

Book Active Control of Bidirectional Structural Vibration

Download or read book Active Control of Bidirectional Structural Vibration written by Wen Yu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-05 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on safeguarding civil structures and residents from natural hazards such as earthquakes through the use of active control. It proposes novel proportional-derivative (PD) and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers, as well as discrete-time sliding mode controllers (DSMCs) for the vibration control of structures involving nonlinearities. Fuzzy logic techniques are used to compensate for nonlinearities. The first part of the book addresses modelling and feedback control in inelastic structures and presents a design for PD/PID controllers. In the second part, classical PD/PID and type-2 fuzzy control techniques are combined to compensate for uncertainties in the structures of buildings. The methodology for tuning the gains of PD/PID is obtained using Lyapunov stability theory, and the system’s stability is verified. Lastly, the book puts forward a DSMC design that does not require system parameters, allowing it to be more flexibly applied. All program codes used in the paper are presented in a MATLAB®/Simulink® environment. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to mechanical and civil engineers, and to advanced undergraduate and graduate engineering students in the areas of structural engineering, structural vibration, and advanced control.

Book Control of Wind induced Tall Building Vibration by Tuned Mass Dampers

Download or read book Control of Wind induced Tall Building Vibration by Tuned Mass Dampers written by You Lin Xu and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind tunnel model tests and theoretical analyses were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of tuned mass dampers in suppressing wind- induced tall building motion. The tall building model was a 1:400 scale aeroelastic model of the CAARC Standard Tall Building. This model and the tuned mass damper models of different parameters were designed and tested in a wind tunnel with properly simulated atmospheric boundary layer flow. The aeroelastic tests of the CAARC model demonstrated the effectiveness of the tuned mass damper system in suppressing the dynamic response of the building. The parametric study of passive tuned mass dampers, leading to theoretical analysis and design of an effective and efficient tuned mass damper system, was based on excitation spectra which were directly measured from the wind tunnel model tests. Theoretical results were in good agreement with the test results. The analytical results further indicated that the effectiveness of tuned mass dampers cn be enhanced by the inclusion of an active control system. (author abstract)

Book Numerical and Experimental Analyses of Actively Controlled Pendulum Tuned Mass Damper

Download or read book Numerical and Experimental Analyses of Actively Controlled Pendulum Tuned Mass Damper written by Hameed Wady Juma and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern structures such as floor systems, bridges, and high-rise buildings have become lighter in mass and more flexible with negligible damping and thus prone to vibration. Extensive studies have been carried out by various researchers to mitigate the unwanted structural vibration caused by human activities, machinery, and environmental effects (wind and seismic). Various vibration control devices and strategies have been developed and used to abate the unwanted vibration and to increase the serviceability level of such structures. In this research, semi-active control strategies have been developed to a) adjust the tuning frequency and b) introduce damping into an air-suspended pendulum tuned mass dampers (ASTMD). The system is made up of air springs, a proportional valve to control the flow of air in and out of the air springs, and a pendulum. The tuned damping system is designed, built, and evaluated numerically and experimentally. The focus of this work has been the synthesis and analysis of the control algorithms and strategies to vary the tuning accuracy, introduce damping into air suspended ASTMD, and to enable the ASTMD to self-tune itself. The acceleration of the main structure and ASTMD as well as the pressure in the air springs are used as the feedback signals in two different control strategies. The outcome of this research showed that the semi-actively controlled ASTMD dissipates the undesirable vibration, efficiently. This results showed that control strategy 1 (controlling air flow to and from the auxiliary air springs) is more effective than control strategy 2 (controlling air flow to and from the main air spring). The ASTMD's performance is improved, by feeding back the main structure's acceleration, in a cascading manner with the above-mentioned semi-active control strategies. Finally, the use of the self-tuning algorithm is shown to be a very effective techniques in improving the performance of the ASTMD. This technique allows that the ASTMD to autonomously re-tune itself and adapt to any change in the natural frequency of the main structure.

Book Seismic Performance Design and Placement of Multiple Tuned Mass Dampers in Building Applications

Download or read book Seismic Performance Design and Placement of Multiple Tuned Mass Dampers in Building Applications written by Jingning Wu and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Extensive investigations have indicated that tuned mass dampers (TMD) are not very effective for seismic applications. One of the reasons is that both the fundamental and higher vibration modes may play important roles in the seismic responses of building structures while the conventional single TMD tuned to the fundamental mode has little effect on the responses of higher modes. In this study, a multiple tuned mass damper (MTMD) scheme that can control the responses of multiple modes simultaneously is proposed to improve the seismic performance of TMDs. The emphasis is placed on how MTMD are distributed between the vibration modes and installed at various floors of a building structure so that the floor acceleration can be significantly reduced and the potential damage to non-structural components in the building can be minimized. A practical yet reasonably accurate procedure for optimal placement of mass dampers in building structures is developed. The effectiveness of MTMD is verified with a 1/4-scale, 3-story frame structure. Numerical simulations on the seismic responses of the frame structure are in good agreement with the experimental results. Both the theoretical and experimental investigations have shown that MTMD systems are superior to a single TMD in terms of the reduction of floor acceleration. Shake table tests have confirmed that the proposed procedure gives rise to a sub-optimal design and placement of MTMD systems. In addition, the decoupling criteria for primary-secondary systems are also studied as a supplement to the study of TMD systems"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book Cost Optimization of Structures

Download or read book Cost Optimization of Structures written by Hojjat Adeli and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-11-02 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the weight of a structure constitutes a significant part of the cost, a minimum weight design is not necessarily the minimum cost design. Little attention in structural optimization has been paid to the cost optimization problem, particularly of realistic three-dimensional structures. Cost optimization is becoming a priority in all civil engineering projects, and the concept of Life-Cycle Costing is penetrating design, manufacturing and construction organizations. In this groundbreaking book the authors present novel computational models for cost optimization of large scale, realistic structures, subjected to the actual constraints of commonly used design codes. As the first book on the subject this book: Contains detailed step-by-step algorithms Focuses on novel computing techniques such as genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic, and parallel computing Covers both Allowable Stress Design (ASD) and Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) codes Includes realistic design examples covering large-scale, high-rise building structures Presents computational models that enable substantial cost savings in the design of structures Fully automated structural design and cost optimization is where large-scale design technology is heading, thus Cost Optimization of Structures: Fuzzy Logic, Genetic Algorithms, and Parallel Computing will be of great interest to civil and structural engineers, mechanical engineers, structural design software developers, and architectural engineers involved in the design of structures and life-cycle cost optimisation. It is also a pioneering text for graduate students and researchers working in building design and structural optimization.

Book Passive Motion Control of Super Tall Buildings

Download or read book Passive Motion Control of Super Tall Buildings written by Zheng Li Gong and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As tall buildings keep becoming taller, they become more susceptible to dynamic excitations such as wind and seismic excitations. One way to reduce structural vibration under dynamic excitations is by placing damping devices in the buildings. In this thesis, the design concept, design procedure and some current applications of tuned mass and viscous dampers are discussed. Taipei101 was used as an example to compare the performance of the two damping schemes. It was modeled in a two-dimensional scheme in SAP2000 and a TMD was placed on its top to study its effect on the structural response due to wind and seismic excitations and confirm with the actual results. A sensitivity study was then performed to study the effect of varying the mass ratio on the structural response. A second TMD was then placed at the location where the maximum deflection occurs for the second mode to evaluate its effectiveness in reducing structural response. Finally, twelve viscous dampers were placed in the model to study their effects on the structural response. Time-history and steady-state analysis in SAP2000 were used for the wind and seismic analyses.
