Book The Mechanical Behavior of Heavily Overconsolidated Resedimented Boston Blue Clay

Download or read book The Mechanical Behavior of Heavily Overconsolidated Resedimented Boston Blue Clay written by Albalyra Geraldine Vargas Bustamante and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geotechnical engineers encounter some of the most challenging problems in heavily overconsolidated soils. Clays under this condition originated in nature or man-made construction. This thesis investigates the mechanical behavior heavily overconsolidated Resedimented Boston Blue Clay (RBBC), as an analog test material. The uniformity, reproducibility, and extensive knowledgebase on this clay permit the investigation of only the effect of overconsolidation. A series of undrained triaxial compression shear tests have been performed on specimens that were Ko-consolidated and swelled to overconsolidation ratios (OCR) ranging from 5 to 62 on RBBC, as well as on Intact Presumpscot Maine Clay. Specimens were consolidated to maximum stress levels between 1.1 and 5.4 MPa. The undrained shear behavior revealed an important relationship with overconsolidation ratio. The triaxial compression test results exhibit a significant increase in the undrained strength ratio (su/[sigma]'vc) when normalized to the minimum consolidation stress. It also shows an important increase in the stiffness, increase in the strain ([epsilon]f) to mobilize the peak resistance and a significant increase of friction angle ([phi]') with overconsolidation. The applicability of the SHANSEP equation and impact on its equation parameters are also discussed in detail. A comprehensive comparison of the new results with prior normally consolidated and lightly overconsolidated data is presented, showing the distinct behavior of heavily overconsolidated specimens. The failure envelope displays a non-linear behavior and the undrained shear strength (su) is reduced up to about 80% from a normally consolidated clay to a heavily overconsolidated clay with an OCR = 50. These observations demonstrate the importance of selecting appropriate design values in the presence of overconsolidated soils.

Book A Comparison of the Behavior of Intact and Resedimented Boston Blue Clay BBC

Download or read book A Comparison of the Behavior of Intact and Resedimented Boston Blue Clay BBC written by Robert Donald House and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resedimented Boston Blue Clay (RBBC) has been used as an analog test material for research at MIT for decades, due to local variability and the high cost of sampling. However, a comprehensive study of the differences in behavior between intact and resedimented BBC has not been completed recently. This thesis analyzes test data from laboratory CRS and triaxial tests conducted at MIT on intact and RBBC. Typical ranges for compression ratio, hydraulic conductivity, coefficient of consolidation, lateral stress ratio, preconsolidation pressure and peak friction angle of RBBC were within ranges for intact BBC. Ranges for secant friction angle, swell ratio and undrained strength for intact BBC overlapped and were lower than ranges reported for RBBC. Both intact and RBBC CRS data plotted to the right of the sedimentation compression line (SCL) in the Burland (1990) framework, showing significant structure and clay fabric. The Jaky equation (1948) was found to overestimate KO for intact BBC when using the peak friction angle, and underestimate KO when using the secant friction angle. Despite these differences, RBBC should continue to be used as an analog test material for studying clay behavior of BBC. Future research should expand the comparison into different test modes and additional clay mineralogies.

Book In Situ Testing Methods in Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book In Situ Testing Methods in Geotechnical Engineering written by Alan J. Lutenegger and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Situ Testing Methods in Geotechnical Engineering covers the field of applied geotechnical engineering related to the use of in situ testing of soils to determine soil properties and parameters for geotechnical design. It provides an overview of the practical aspects of the most routine and common test methods, as well as test methods that engineers may wish to include on specific projects. It is suited for a graduate-level course on field testing of soils and will also aid practicing engineers. Test procedures for determining in situ lateral stress, strength, and stiffness properties of soils are examined, as is the determination of stress history and rate of consolidation. Readers will be introduced to various approaches to geotechnical design of shallow and deep foundations using in situ tests. Importantly, the text discusses the potential advantages and disadvantages of using in situ tests.
