Book Effect of Backfill Compaction on Design Criteria for Hardened Facilities

Download or read book Effect of Backfill Compaction on Design Criteria for Hardened Facilities written by Jon Enrique Windham and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a series of two-dimensional plane-strain, dynamic finite element, structure-medium interaction code calculations are presented. These calculations parametrically investigated the effect of variations in constitutive properties of the backfill region around a hypothetical, shallow-buried protective structure. Two parameter studies were conducted on this plane-strain idealization of a simple buried structure while under a long duration local surface air-blast loading: The first investigated differences in the dynamic response of the structure under this loading due to changing the surrounding backfill from a dense (or well-compacted) glacial till to the same material in a loose (or poorly compacted) condition; The second is identical with the first except that dense and loose clay shale materials were simulated. The calculations indicated that, for the particular idealized problem investigated, the use of loose rather than dense backfill results in (1) increased deflections across backfill sections; (2) increased loads on, deflections of, and thrusts, shears, and bending moments within the structure, and (3) increased amplitudes of the shock spectra for points on the inside surface of the structure.

Book In Defense of Disciplines

Download or read book In Defense of Disciplines written by Jerry A. Jacobs and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-02-05 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calls for closer connections among disciplines can be heard throughout the world of scholarly research, from major universities to the National Institutes of Health. In Defense of Disciplines presents a fresh and daring analysis of the argument surrounding interdisciplinarity. Challenging the belief that blurring the boundaries between traditional academic fields promotes more integrated research and effective teaching, Jerry Jacobs contends that the promise of interdisciplinarity is illusory and that critiques of established disciplines are often overstated and misplaced. Drawing on diverse sources of data, Jacobs offers a new theory of liberal arts disciplines such as biology, economics, and history that identifies the organizational sources of their dynamism and breadth. Illustrating his thesis with a wide range of case studies including the diffusion of ideas between fields, the creation of interdisciplinary scholarly journals, and the rise of new fields that spin off from existing ones, Jacobs turns many of the criticisms of disciplines on their heads to mount a powerful defense of the enduring value of liberal arts disciplines. This will become one of the anchors of the case against interdisciplinarity for years to come.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Literacy Studies

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Literacy Studies written by Jennifer Rowsell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Literacy Studies offers a comprehensive view of the field of language and literacy studies. With forty-three chapters reflecting new research from leading scholars in the field, the Handbook pushes at the boundaries of existing fields and combines with related fields and disciplines to develop a lens on contemporary scholarship and emergent fields of inquiry. The Handbook is divided into eight sections: • The foundations of literacy studies • Space-focused approaches • Time-focused approaches • Multimodal approaches • Digital approaches • Hermeneutic approaches • Making meaning from the everyday • Co-constructing literacies with communities. This is the first handbook of literacy studies to recognise new trends and evolving trajectories together with a focus on radical epistemologies of literacy. The Routledge Handbook of Literacy Studies is an essential reference for undergraduate and postgraduate students and those researching and working in the areas of applied linguistics and language and literacy.

Book excerpt: Bringing together the leading European expertise in behaviour and design of silos, this important new book is an essential reference source for all concerned with current problems and developments in silo technology. Silos are used in an enormous range of industries and the handling characteristics of many industrial materials require different approaches for successful, economical installations. For the first time, the many approaches taken by specialists in different fields are brought together in a unified way so that common problems can be addressed. This book is the result of a four-year European project - Concerted Action - Silos - funded under the Brite Euram programme which has involved over 100 expert engineers and researchers from all over Europe, in seven working groups.
