Book excerpt: Studying individuals and students' attitudes towards environment and factors affecting students to be responsible individuals towards their environment may provide help towards the solution of environmental problems. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate environmental attitudes of high school students in terms of some variables. The sample of the study consists of 330 participants of whom 145 are male and 185 are female having studied in a High School in Balikesir (in western Turkey). In the study, as a means of data collection, Environmental Attitude Scale (EAS) and the personal information form have been used. The EAS which consists of 35 items is composed of 4 sub-dimensions as "Environmental awareness", "Attitude toward recovery", "Attitude toward recycling" and "Environmental consciousness and behavior". According to the findings, considering the analysis of the EAS, statistically a considerable difference was reached between the sub-dimensions of the EAS and the gender, grade and parent education level variables. However, a considerable difference was not found between the branch of students and some sub-dimensions of the EAS. "Items and Factor Structures of the Environmental Attitude Scale (EAS)" is appended.

Book Surveying Climate Relevant Behavior

Download or read book Surveying Climate Relevant Behavior written by Markus Hadler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-12 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book discusses the contribution of sociology and survey research to climate research. The authors address the questions of which behaviors are of climate relevance, who is engaging in these behaviors, in which contexts do these behaviors occur, and which individual perceptions and values are related to them. Utilizing survey research, the book focuses on the measurement of climate-relevant behaviors with population surveys and develops an instrument that allows a valid estimate of an individual’s GHG emissions with a few core items. While the development of these instruments was based on surveys and qualitative interviews conducted in Austria, the instruments were subsequently tested in a set of 31 European countries, revealing the international relevance of such research. The book also concludes with a brief consideration of the effects of the COVID-19 crisis on environmental attitudes, situating the project globally.

This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was undertaken to explore the relationship between environmental attitude and pro-environmental behavior and comparison of these variables among students/teachers, public/private secondary schools and different gender respondents. All the secondary schools both Public, as well as Private, Boys and girls in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, were the universe of the study. 200 Secondary level students and teachers were randomly selected as sample of the study. The data was collected through an adopted scale by Heyl, Moyano Díaz and Cifuentes's (2013) scale of 'Environmental attitudes' and 'Pro-Environmental Behavior'. The data collected were processed by applying SPSS-23 version. Reliability test applied to test items of all three variables confirmed reliability from acceptable to good ranges. The mean value for all variables indicated agreement of respondents with the questions asked. The results of one sample t-test also give results expressing agreement of a majority of respondents with the questions raised in all three variables. There was a positive relationship between environmental attitude and pro-environmental behavior indicated by the results of Pearson correlation test.

Book Environmental Awareness in Relation to Awareness Towards Social Duty

Download or read book Environmental Awareness in Relation to Awareness Towards Social Duty written by Prashant Kumar Astalin and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The environment is very important not only for the present generation but also for the future generations. Environment, of course, is all the factors living and non-living that actually affect on individual organism or population at any point in the life cycle. Therefore, students must have consciousness about environment and should understand their responsibility towards environment. The main objective of this study was to predict the environmental awareness among higher secondary students with the help of awareness of social duty, educational and demographic variables. In this study, it was discussed that the accountability of awareness towards social duty in environmental awareness. The major findings were that about 35.3% of the environmental awareness scores of the students may be accounted by the awareness towards social duty scores of the higher secondary students and also, there is a positive (r = 0.594) relationship between environmental awareness and awareness towards social duty of higher secondary school students. This means that students with better awareness towards social duty are more aware towards environmental awareness and vice-versa.

Book An Integrated Model for Investigation of Social psychological Influences on College Students Attitudinal Tendencies Toward Appropriate Environmental Behavior

Download or read book An Integrated Model for Investigation of Social psychological Influences on College Students Attitudinal Tendencies Toward Appropriate Environmental Behavior written by Yi-Hsuan Hsu and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A culturally adaptive model involving appropriate patterns of environmental behavior in a developing country-- Taiwan-- is examined. In the model, underlying social and psychological factors that determine individuals' attitudinal responses toward appropriate environmental behavior were assessed. By means of questionnaire data randomly collected from a sample of college students (236/300 = 78.7% response rate) in Taipei City of Taiwan, seven major scales of variables were measured: socio-demographic characteristics, situational factors, personality variables, perceived external & internal barriers to action, environmental attitudes, perceived self-efficacy toward action, and appropriate environmental behavior. Stepwise multiple regression analyses were used to identify the most parsimonious set of the determinants that best predict environmental behavior, as well as to recognize the most important behavior(s) that were appropriate to the respondents. The major findings were: (1) The relationships between perceived importance and perceived appropriateness of environmental behavior on the five categories as well as the total behavior scale were all highly correlated, especially, the behaviors involving energy and water conservation (EW), consistently rated as the most important and appropriate category of environmental behavior, with social & political actions (SP) viewed as the least favorable behavior to the respondents. (2) For the socio-demographic characteristics, older respondents (22-41 years old) in the graduate level of the study and who obtain membership in social organizations as well as frequent contact with environmental education activities and courses are more likely to hold positive behavioral tendencies toward environmental conservation. (3) Significant correlations were found between environmental attitudes and three social structural variables: external barriers (r = -0.14), experiences with EE (r = 0.15), and environmental courses completed (r = 0.15), indicating that the respondents who perceive lower levels of external barriers and higher levels of the cognition on environmental education and the relevant courses are more likely to hold positive attitudes toward the environment. (4) Positive, significant correlations were found between environmental attitudes and four psychological-dimension variables in environmental dispositions: pastoralism (r = 0.17), environmental trust (r = 0.14), antiquarianism (r = .21), and mechanical orientation (r = 0.21). (5) A moderate, positive correlation was found between environmental attitudes and perceived self-efficacy (r = .38), explaining a significant three-way interaction between perceived self-efficacy, environmental attitudes, and behavioral tendencies. (6) The total scale of appropriate environmental behavior (AEB) was significantly correlated with 18 out of 22 factor variables measured. These correlates include: perceived self-efficacy (r = 0.51), pastoralism (r = 0.48), status of study (r = 0.42), internal barriers (r = - 0.39), age (r = - 0.38), antiquarianism (r = 0.37), situational factors (r = 0.34), external barriers (r = - 0.31), environmental attitudes (r = .30), membership in NGOs (r = .23), environmental trust (r = .22), environmental adaptation (r = - 21), leisure interest in indoor activity (r = - 0.21), experience with EE (r = .20), leisure interest in outdoor activity (r = 0.20), mechanical orientation (r = 0.16), environmental courses completed (r = 0.16), and urbanism (r = - 0.15). Combining the effects derived from these social psychological indicators, a total of 61% of the variance was explained for the model as a whole. Implications for theory, practice, and future research on environment-behavior studies as well as the pursuit of environmental education/communications were discussed.

Book The Impact of Education on Environment Attitudes

Download or read book The Impact of Education on Environment Attitudes written by Entesar Ali Al Menhali and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "environmental attitudes" reflect one's propensity ( of either favorable or unfavorable) towards a given environment cause in terms of beliefs or perceived status. Studies on environmental attitudes have gained numerous criticisms for not being theoretical exhaustive. Addressing that, this study systematically developed a comprehensive measurement model that addresses the multidimensionality of environmental attitudes. This study specifically assessed the validity and internal consistency of the proposed measurement model of environmental attitudes within the context of education for sustainability (EfS) using SEM-AMOS. This study also evaluated the utility ofthe proposed measurement model through the testing of measurement invariance [sic] across genders, nationalities, and courses among the undergraduates in Abu Dhabi. With respect to these specific objectives, this study successfully sampled 130 respondents using an online-based questionnaire survey. The instrument used in this study was adapted from the original items of Environmental Attitudes Inventory (EAI) (Milfont & Duckitt 2010), with the considerations on both preservation and utilization as the higher -order dimensions of environmental attitudes. Following the analysis, the obtained results revealed a refined seven-factor model of EAI with 21 items, in which both convergent validity and discriminant validity were validated. The environmental attitudes demonstrated multidimensionality hierarchically, as demonstrated by the obtained results of the first-order, second-order, and the third-order models. Besides that, this study also found that the undergraduates of science and technology courses, compared to the social science courses, demonstrated higher propensity to preserve the environment. Conclusively, this study systematically explored the horizontal and vertical structures of environmental attitudes in the development of the proposed measurement model to assess the environmental attitudes. Nonetheless, this study revealed that pro-environmental attitudes undergraduate students tend to be limited to certain group within the context of EfS, thus would incline to constrain the resolution of environmental problems. Thirdly, the confirmation of the relevance of human and perceived environmental threat according to culture -specific perspective in the formation and determination of environmental attitudes.

Book Field Research Comparison of the environmental awareness of US and European students

Download or read book Field Research Comparison of the environmental awareness of US and European students written by Daniela Keller and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2005-04-18 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2004 in the subject Sociology - Methodology and Methods, grade: A-, San Diego State University (Sociology), language: English, abstract: Based on 14 qualitative guided interviews, U.S.-American and European students environmental awareness are investigated. The topics concentrated on in the interview guide were values connected with environmental protection and nature, concrete actions, awareness of real and possible consequences of pollution, the fear of them and sources of information. Students from the U.S. as well as from Europe value environmental protection. European students are more concerned about environmental protection and more negative about pollution. A higher concern of European students can especially be manifested when it comes to genetically modified food, of which American students don't have any fear at all. Both groups enjoy being in the nature, American students like camping, European ones like to take a walk or hike. Religion influences European students' values of environmental protection, but not American ones. European students consider recycling more self-evidently and are more likely to buy organic food. American students mention activities like not littering and planting trees, which European students don't mention. American and European students equal each other in terms of thinking that Europe is better in environmental protection than the U.S. and their environmental values having an effect on their voting behavior.
