Book Investigation of Electrode Erosion in High Current Electric Arcs

Download or read book Investigation of Electrode Erosion in High Current Electric Arcs written by Rolf Dethlefsen and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments on electrode erosion due to magnetically driven high current arcs are described together with a review of the literature. The range of parameters is: arc current 2 to 30 KA, pressure in various gases up to 4 atm, magnetic field strength up to 6 KG. The arc travels in a uniform magnetic field between segmented rail electrodes. The self-magnetic field of the current feed rails is reduced to a negligible level. Measurements of the arc velocity are given. Test plates of various metals are placed between the electrode rails. They are traversed by the moving arc so that the plates are exposed to the anode attachment on one side and to the cathode attachment on the other side. The thermal and electrical properties of various electrode metals have been compiled. The relative erosion resistance of the metals is evaluated. High-speed photos have indicated that the moving arc attaches in one or several simultaneous attachment spots at anode and cathode. The lifetime of these attachment spots was found to be in the range from 1 to 20 microseconds on copper electrodes. They emit a high velocity jet of plasma which influences the stability and propagation of the travelling arc. (Author).

Book Electrode Erosion in High Current Electric Arcs

Download or read book Electrode Erosion in High Current Electric Arcs written by K. T. Shih and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods were developed to measure the anode heat flux and current densities of high-current-pulsed arcs. The heat flux density was determined by measuring the time from striking an arc to the onset of surface melting. Data was taken using argon and nitrogen with different metals and pressures. The anode heat flux density was found to be between 10,000 to 1,000,000 W/sq cm for arc currents of 50 to 2000 amps; these values increased with increasing arc current and gas pressure and were higher in nitrogen than in argon. The current density was measured by a split anode. The maximum current density was found to be 55000 A/sq cm in air at atmospheric pressure, a current of 1200 amps. The surface conditions were found to have a strong effect on anode erosion. In addition, high-speed movie pictures were used to study the arc and its erosion spot.

Book Plasma and Spot Phenomena in Electrical Arcs

Download or read book Plasma and Spot Phenomena in Electrical Arcs written by Isak Beilis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-05 with total page 1137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to a thorough investigation of the physics and applications of the vacuum arc – a highly-ionized metallic plasma source used in a number of applications – with emphasis on cathode spot phenomena and plasma formation. The goal is to understand the origins and behavior of the various complex and sometimes mysterious phenomena involved in arc formation, such as cathode spots, electrode vaporization, and near-electrode plasma formation. The book takes the reader from a model of dense cathode plasma based on charge-exchange ion-atom collisions through a kinetic approach to cathode vaporization and on to metal thermophysical properties of cathodes. This picture is further enhanced by an in-depth study of cathode jets and plasma acceleration, the effects of magnetic fields on cathode spot behavior, and electrical characteristics of arcs and cathode spot dynamics. The book also describes applications to space propulsion, thin film deposition, laser plasma generation, and magnetohydrodynamics, making this comprehensive and up-to-date volume a valuable resource for researchers in academia and industry.

Book Handbook of Thermal Plasmas

Download or read book Handbook of Thermal Plasmas written by Maher I. Boulos and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-20 with total page 1973 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative reference presents a comprehensive review of the evolution of plasma science and technology fundamentals over the past five decades. One of this field’s principal challenges has been its multidisciplinary nature requiring coverage of fundamental plasma physics in plasma generation, transport phenomena under high-temperature conditions, involving momentum, heat and mass transfer, and high-temperature reaction kinetics, as well as fundamentals of material science under extreme conditions. The book is structured in five distinct parts, which are presented in a reader-friendly format allowing for detailed coverage of the science base and engineering aspects of the technology including plasma generation, mathematical modeling, diagnostics, and industrial applications of thermal plasma technology. This book is an essential resource for practicing engineers, research scientists, and graduate students working in the field.

Book Simulator Tests to Study Hot flow Problems Related to a Gas Core Reactor

Download or read book Simulator Tests to Study Hot flow Problems Related to a Gas Core Reactor written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An advance study of materials, fuel injection, and hot flow problems related to the gas core nuclear rocket is reported. The first task was to test a previously constructed induction heated plasma GCNR simulator above 300 kW. A number of tests are reported operating in the range of 300 kW at 10,000 cps. A second simulator was designed but not constructed for cold-hot visualization studies using louvered walls. A third task was a paper investigation of practical uranium feed systems, including a detailed discussion of related problems. The last assignment resulted in two designs for plasma nozzle test devices that could be operated at 200 atm on hydrogen.
