Book excerpt: The use of cable-stayed bridges in medium- and long-span applications in the United States has increased significantly in the past ten years. Of paramount importance with this type of bridge is the protection of the stay cables from corrosive elements. An extensive survey, reported herein, showed a general concern over the adequacy of the corrosion protection of the most widely used current system. In this study, the popular two-barrier system (prestressing strand inside polyethylene sheath injected with portland cement grout) was examined experimentally. The effectiveness of the grout in providing secondary corrosion protection in the event of a cut or break in the external sheathing was a major focus of the experimental work.

Over past 40 years, rapid developments have been made on modern cable stayed bridge. With main span length increasing , more shallow and slender stiffness girders used in modern cable stayed bridge, the safety of whole bridge under service loading and environmental dynamic loading such as impact , wind and earthquake loadings , presents increasingly important concern in design , construction and service In India the first cable stayed bridge was AKKAR BRIDGE, SIKKIM (1985) Constructed by Gammon India limited. The other cable stayed bridge are Vidhya sagar Setu (1992) Kolkata, Bandra – worli sea link (Mumbai), Cable stayed bridge across Chambal river (Kota) etc.

This report of the Transportation Research Board defines the maintenance management systems and decision making criteria used by transportation agencies for maintaining exposed bridge steel. Material selection criteria, surface preparation and application practices, quality control and quality assurance programs, and funding mechanisms are discussed in detail. The impact of recent and proposed environmental and worker protection regulations on current practice is reported. Book excerpt: Cable-stayed structures have become increasingly popular over the last 30 years and have been used in all parts of the world. Modern cable-stayed bridges have a history of over 50-years and have been constructed with span lengths ranging from 15 m to over 1000 m. Many long span cable-stayed bridges have been built for railway and highway traffic applications. Stay cables have also been used on pedestrian structures, many of which are architecturally striking and have become landmark structures. There is growing use in building structures, particularly for cable-supported roofs. Most of the cable supported structures have been in the form of cable-stayed bridges; but in recent years, extradosed bridges have seen increased popularity among the designers. Led by the experience in Japan, more than 200 extradosed bridges have been constructed worldwide in the past 15 years. The first edition of these fib recommendations was published as fib Bulletin 30 in 2005 and was the first specification published by fib for stay cable systems. This new bulletin has been updated based on Bulletin 30 with the aim to reflect the current state of the art and encompass the latest knowledge in cable systems. In addition, it has been the aspiration of Commission 5 and Task Group 5.5 to harmonize the guidance in this updated bulletin with other stay cable recommendations from around the world, including those from Europe, Japan and the USA. This new bulletin is intended to supersede and replace fib Bulletin 30. It is recommended that it be used in lieu of fib Bulletin 30 for all future cable supported applications. The updated bulletin introduces several significant enhancements to the specifications: These recommendations are applicable to both stay cable and extradosed cable applications. In the past, there has been some debate over the boundary between cable-stayed and extradosed bridges. This bulletin presents a new continuous approach valid for both. A completely new testing requirement to assess the performance of cable systems under bending fatigue, including both anchorages and saddles, if applicable, has been added. Testing requirements for saddle systems have been reformulated. In addition to the bending fatigue test noted above, new testing procedures for stay cable saddles with isolated tensile elements are introduced. This includes tests for saddle axial fatigue, friction and tensile testing, and determination of the effective saddle friction coefficient. Expanded system qualification, including requirements for both stay cable and extradosed applications. Includes new provisions for MTE qualification and additional load transferring connection devices. Minimum number of tests is specified for each. A new in-situ damping measurement test has been added to verify the actual damping ratio of the damping devices installed. By testing on site, selected cables may be excited to vibrate without and with the damping devices so that the observed vibration behaviour can be compared to the specified value. Other revisions have been made to reflect the current state of practice: Expanded quality control testing requirements Inclusion of epoxy-coated prestressing steel as a protection layer. Previous recommendations only considered zinc coatings. Specifications for epoxy coating material are given. Requirements for stainless steel components such as pipes, caps and plates Updated guidance for designing lightning protection systems Detailed recommendations for different levels of inspection of cable systems, including: initial, routine, detailed and exceptional inspections An updated list of references, relevant standards, and extended literature

Several incidents of in-service and under construction bridge failures have recently taken place. These dramatic failures emphasize the importance of risk-based inspections and analysis of real-life data to evaluate reliability of bridges. To effectuate benefits of reliability analysis in bridge maintenance, work on theoretical reliability must be equipped with practical analytical tools. Such an approach must underscore risk elements and identify processes to manage risk and avoid unexpected outcomes of failures and service disruption of bridges. The devastating earthquakes of February 6, 2023, in the southern region of Turkey near the northern border of Syria, which claimed tens of thousands of lives, caused enormous structural damage and staggering economic losses. These seismic events brought to focus on the vitality of instilling infrastructure routes that must accommodate emergency management plans to integrate the influx of medical and rescue response teams. The safe operation of bridges along these routes is indispensable for mobilization and deployment of rescue teams, medical personnel, humanitarian assistance, and the supply of food and water. The reliability of access routes and bridges is defined by their ability to adequately function as planned to effectuate emergency management plans, in the event of a similar seismic event, anywhere in the world. Risk-Based Strategies for Bridge Maintenance contains selected papers presented at the 11th New York City Bridge Conference (New York City, USA, 21-22 August 2023), and discusses issues of reliability, risk assessment, management, maintenance, inspection, monitoring, design, preservation, and rehabilitation of bridges. Corrosion is caused by the interaction of steel and atmospheric conditions. It can be prevented by adding a protective layer to the steel or by using a protective steel, collectively known as corrosion protection systems. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of six of the most common corrosion protection systems: uncoated weathering steel (UWS), uncoated stainless steel, galvanizing, metallizing, 1-coat inorganic zinc paint, and a 3-coat organic zinc paint system, in relatively corrosive environments. The severely corrosive environments considered in this research are coastal environments where natural chlorides are present and environments where chlorides are present via the high use of deicing salts. Performance was evaluated first through a statistical analysis of existing field data and subsequently through implementation of laboratory accelerated corrosion testing on each of the corrosion protection systems for 80 cycles, representing 80 years in the field. The statistical analysis of field data showed the relative ranking in order of descending performance to be: galvanizing, UWS, then paint, with metallizing having variable performance over different age ranges; this ranking was affirmed by longevity estimates determined through laboratory testing when lower, more conservative percent mass loss and percent rusted benchmarks were used to determine the longevity estimates. Stainless steel corroded more than expected during laboratory testing and requires further investigation. The implications of the longevity estimates show that steel can provide a long service life even in a relatively severe environment. Use of any of these corrosion protection systems can improve performance, increase service life, decrease required maintenance, and provide economical steel bridges.
