Book excerpt: The results of fundamental investigations on a variety of topics related to the optimization of analog and digital data communication systems are presented. The maximum likelihood estimation of FM-modulated signals is investigated. A study is made of theshold phenomenon in FM reception with an ideal discriminator and a postdetection Wiener filter for the case of a random modulation function. Information theory is applied to establish bounds on the performance of analog communications systems. The performance of PCM systems for transmitting analog information is investigated and compared with theoretical bounds for systems of prescribed complexity. Previous work on the partial ordering of digital channels by the criterion of inclusion was extended. The analysis of the optimization of N-ary digital systems operating over a dispersive channel, which was begun during a previous phase of the contract, is further advanced.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results, obtained by analytical investigations and by computer simulation, of studies of advanced techniques upon which the design of improved analog communication systems may be based. It includes the derivation of the optimal operations to be performed in the least mean-square error estimation of the modulation function in an FM communications system. Relationships between phase-locked loop demodulation and maximum-likelihood estimation of anglemodulated signals are developed. It is shown that a physically realizable phase-locked loop followed by an infinite-delay linear filter can perform the operations specified for the infinite-delay maximum likelihood estimator. Phase-locked loop demodulators for both PM and FM modulated signals are analyzed by the quasilinearization technique. It is shodn that analog computer simulation of phase-locked loop demodulators based on low frequency equivalent circuits, which contain a sinusoidal nonlinearity, is a practical means for the investigation of sumay be attained by simultaneous use of pre-transmission and post-detection filtering is examined.
