Until now, the literatures examining the employment relationships have tended to operate either from the employer or the employee perspectives and have typically approached the topic from a single discipline be it psychology, sociology, human resource management, organizational behavior, industrial relations, law or economics. Failure to consider multiple perspectives has created a fragmented understanding of the employment relationship. This volume incorporates social exchange, economics, industrial relations, legal, and justice theory perspectives. In addition, chapters have been written by authors that reflect the full international body of research on the employment relationship and provide information about legislation, governance, and cultural differences across nations. The conceptual and empirical foundations for understanding theemployment relationship from these different theoretical perspectives facilitates the establishment of the convergent and discriminant validity of the psychological contract and the investments-contributions models of the employment relationship in relation to related exchange constructs such as perceived organizational support and leader-member exchange. Book excerpt: Psychological contract Breach (PCB) play a crucial role to shape employee reactions (ERs) Therefore; this study investigated the possessions of Psychological contract Breach on employee's reactions (organizational behavior regarding citizenship, job satisfaction) under the moderation of organizational trust. Data were collected from 340 employees of the Health sector by using the technique of simple random sampling. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) technique has been used to check the validity of the data while structure equation modeling (SEM) technique has been used for test the relationship between variables. Our findings revealed that psychological contract breach had negative and significant relationships with employees' reactions (organizational citizenship behavior, job satisfaction). Further, organizational trust is also significantly moderated on the relationship between PCB and employees' reactions (organizational behavior regarding citizenship, job satisfaction).

Book excerpt: The focus of this dissertation is to gain a greater understanding of the individual psychological contract. It is proposed that by examining other specific exchange relationships (e.g., individual-supervisor, individual-co-worker) in addition to the already dominantly examined individual-organization exchange relationship, a greater understanding of how these specific exchanges impact employee attitudes and behaviors differently such as commitment and organizational citizenship behaviors, especially in the presence of a psychological contract breach can be achieved. This research is grounded in social exchange theory and norm of reciprocity and draws from the perceived organizational support, leader-member exchange, and co-worker exchange theories to examine each specific exchange relationship. Participants consisted of employees from several organizations and university systems who were placed in three subsamples to examine each exchange relationship and their respective breaches. Results indicate partial support for the overall idea of increasing the examination of the psychological contract to include the distinct exchange relationships of the individual-supervisor and individual-co-worker in addition to the individual-organization exchange. More specifically, results indicate significant support for the following Hypotheses: Hypotheses 1a, 1b, and 1c indicating that POS, LMX, and CWX are positively related to Organizational Commitment, particularly Organizational Affective Commitment, with POS demonstrating the strongest relationship as predicted, Hypotheses 2a, 2b, and 2c indicating that LMX, POS, and CWX are positively related to Supervisor Commitment, particularly Supervisor Affective Commitment, with LMX showing the strongest relationship as predicted, Hypothesis 3a indicating that CWX has the strongest positive relationship to Co-worker Affective Commitment, Hypothesis 4b indicating that LMX is positively related to OCB-O, but the main prediction of Hypothesis 4a indicating POS would have the strongest positive relationship was not supported, Hypothesis 5b indicating that LMX has the strongest positive relationship to OCB-S, and finally, Hypothesis 6c indicating CWX has the strongest positive relationship to OCB-CW as predicted. Lastly, results indicate support for only one of the moderating hypotheses, Hypothesis 7a, which indicates that the interaction of POS and an employee perceived psychological contract breach on the part of the organization has the strongest negative effect on Organizational Affective Commitment. All other moderating hypotheses were not found to be significant.

The book addresses as its core concern the relationship between temporary employment contracts and employee well-being. It does so within the analytic framework of the psychological contract, and advances theory and knowledge about the psychological contract by exploring it from a variety of perspectives. It also sets the psychological contract within the context of a range of other potential influences on work-related well-being including workload, job insecurity, employability, and organizational support. A key aim of the book is to identify the relative importance of these various potential influences on well-being. The book covers seven countries; Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the UK, as well as Israel as a comparator outside Europe. Data were collected from over 5,000 workers in over 200 organizations; and from both permanent and temporary workers as well as from employers. The book's conclusions are interesting and controversial. The central finding is that contrary to expectations, temporary workers report higher well-being than permanent workers. As expected, a range of factors help to explain variations in work-related well-being and the research highlights the important role of the psychological contract. However, even after taking into account alternative explanations, the significant influence of type of employment contract remains, with temporary workers reporting higher well-being. In addition to this core finding, by exploring several aspects of the psychological contract, and taking into account both employer and employee perspectives, the book sheds new light on the nature and role of the psychological contract. It also raises some challenging policy questions and while acknowledging the potentially precarious nature of temporary jobs, highlights the need to consider the increasingly demanding nature of permanent jobs and their effects on the well-being of employees.
