Book Reconnaissance Geology of the Inner Continental Shelf Cape Fear Region North Carolina

Download or read book Reconnaissance Geology of the Inner Continental Shelf Cape Fear Region North Carolina written by Edward P. Meisburger and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Inner Continental Shelf off the North Carolina coast between the South Carolina border and Cape Lookout, North Carolina, was surveyed to obtain information on bottom and subbottom sediment deposits and structures. The location and the extent of deposits of sand suitable for restoration and nourishment of nearby beaches were investigated. Primary survey coverage consisted of 824 kilometers (445 nautical miles) of seismic reflection survey and 139 cores ranging in length from 0.6 to 6.1 meters (2 to 20 feet). More than half of the area surveyed is underlain by two thick sections of Coastal Plain sediments characterized by seaward-dipping progradational internal beds which generate a characteristic acoustic pattern on seismic reflection records. These beds are exposed on the shelf floor in places and elsewhere are covered by a thin sediment blanket. Samples of these extensive units indicate that one is of Cretaceous age and the other of Oligocene age. Both units consist predominantly of fine quartz sand. Other sediment units closely underlying the shelf floor consist of planar-to complex-bedded sheet and channel-fill deposits of predominantly quartz sand or biogenic calcium carbonate. These deposits range in age from Eocene to Holocene. Modern sediment accretion on the inner shelf appears to be largely restricted to the shoal fields off Cape Lookout and Cape Fear, and to inlet shoals along the coast.

Book North Carolina

Download or read book North Carolina written by Fred Beyer and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Carolina: The Years Before Man is an interpretation of continuing investigations of North Carolina geology by many working scientists. This recounting of North Carolina's past is not a collection of research papers but a geological narrative compiled with every effort made to relate events in a way that will present an understandable story. Beyer offers the reader an opportunity to consider himself as products of an evolving planet, one with a past so lengthy that human history is diminished to insignificance.

Book The Geology of the Carolinas

Download or read book The Geology of the Carolinas written by J. Wright Horton and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, the Carolina Geological Society invited forty-three authors to contribute to the creation of The Geology of the Carolinas. The only comprehensive, modern treatment of the subject, the volume has been prepared for a diverse readership ranging from undergraduate students to specialists in the fields of geology and related earth sciences. Following the editors' general introduction are chapters on Precambrian and Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Appalachian Blue Ridge and Piedmont; rocks of early Mesozoic rift basins, formed just before the opening of the Atlantic Ocean; Cretaceous and Tertiary sedimentary deposits of the Atlantic Coastal Plain; Quaternary geology and geomorphology; Cenozoic tectonism, including evidence for the recurrence of large earthquakes near Charleston; and an overview of mineral resources in the Carolinas. The book includes an index of field guides produced by the society and a thorough bibliography. By introducing exciting new concepts and focusing on challenging problems on the frontiers of research, this authoritative book will stimulate research in the years to come. The Editors: J. Wright Horton, Jr., is a research geologist for the United States Geological Survey in Reston, Virginia. Victor A. Zullo is a professor of geology at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
