Book Investigating the Effect of Graphic Advance Organizers on the Reading Comprehension of Secondary age Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book Investigating the Effect of Graphic Advance Organizers on the Reading Comprehension of Secondary age Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Aron Nathan Weinberg and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading comprehension interventions that target students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have traditionally included explicit instruction in the delivery of the intervention in order to compensate for the well-documented executive function difficulties experienced by many individuals within this population. A handful of single- case studies (n=9) within this literature have used supplementary graphic organizers (GOs), as one component of a larger treatment package, to successfully help students with ASD comprehend text more readily. The independent effect of a GO on the reading comprehension of individuals with ASD therefore remains untested. In this dissertation study, which employed single-case research methodology, five secondary students with ASD completed a reading comprehension intervention that featured graphic advance organizers (GAOs) with limited pre-training or instructional support provided by the implementer. Results indicated that some participants may be able to effectively use GAOs independently to increase their comprehension of expository texts. Findings, limitations, and implications are presented.

Book The Effects of Graphic Organizers on Building Comprehension in Students on the Autism Spectrum

Download or read book The Effects of Graphic Organizers on Building Comprehension in Students on the Autism Spectrum written by Karen Karin Ruth Kliemann and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many students on the autism spectrum display a strong ability to process and comprehend information at elevated levels when presented with it visually. Despite this, students who have autism are increasingly being educated in general education content classrooms that utilize lessons directed to whole groups of students and limit the use of visually presented material. For some students with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), this presentation introduces difficulties related to attention as well as comprehension and retention of material. Research indicates promising results associated with using a graphic organizer to increase comprehension accuracy in students who answer wh-questions following the reading of a short passage. The purpose of this study was to document the relationship between using a graphic organizer and increasing reading comprehension. The study employed a single-subject multiple baseline design across participants to evaluate if the use of a graphic organizer impacted the correctness of answering wh-questions for grade-level social studies content. Participants included four eighth grade students in an urban public school who had been diagnosed with ASD. Results supported research by showing an increase in comprehension skills with the use of a graphic organizer.

Download or read book Investigating a Reading Comprehension Intervention for High School Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder A Pilot Study written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlights: We adapted and examined an evidence-based reading comprehension intervention with adolescents in a high school setting. Adolescents with ASD were paired with a neurotypical peer partner to learn and use reading strategies with informational text two to three times per week to improve reading comprehension and content knowledge. Though exploratory, increases in comprehension and interactions were noted along with decreased challenges behaviors during treatment. Abstract: We adapted and piloted Collaborative Strategic Reading–High School, a reading comprehension intervention, with three high school students with autism spectrum disorder to investigate its effects on their reading comprehension. Using a nonconcurrent, multiple-baseline design, participants with autism spectrum disorder were paired with a neurologically typical (neurotypical) reading partner to learn and use reading strategies with informational text two to three times per week. Daily comprehension checks were collected and visually inspected for trends along with data on the number of challenging behaviors and social interactions displayed during intervention. Fidelity of implementation was also measured. Though exploratory, increases in comprehension and interactions were noted along with decreases in challenging behaviors. Implications for practice and research are discussed.

Book Understanding Other Minds

Download or read book Understanding Other Minds written by Simon Baron-Cohen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises 26 exciting chapters by internationally renowned scholars, addressing the central psychological process separating humans from other animals: the ability to imagine the thoughts and feelings of others, and to reflect on the contents of our own mindsa theory of mind (ToM). The four sections of the book cover developmental, cultural, and neurobiological approaches to ToM across different populations and species. The chapters explore the earliest stages of development of ToM in infancy, and how plastic ToM learning is; why 3-year-olds typically fail false belief tasks and how ToM continues to develop beyond childhood into adulthood; the debate between simulation theory and theory theory; cross-cultural perspectives on ToM and how ToM develops differently in deaf children; how we use our ToM when we make moral judgments, and the link between emotional intelligence and ToM; the neural basis of ToM measured by evoked response potentials, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and studies of brain damage; emotional vs. cognitive empathy in neuropsychiatric conditions such as autism, schizophrenia, and psychopathy; the concept of self in autism and teaching methods targeting ToM deficits; the relationship between empathy, the pain matrix and the mirror neuron system; the role of oxytocin and fetal testosterone in mentalizing and empathy; the heritability of empathy and candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with empathy; and ToM in non-human primates. These 26 chapters represent a masterly overview of a field that has deepened since the first edition was published in 1993.

Book The Impact of Graphic Organizers on Critical Thinking and Reading Skills with Adult ESL Students

Download or read book The Impact of Graphic Organizers on Critical Thinking and Reading Skills with Adult ESL Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of graphic organizers on critical thinking skills when used with adult ESL students. Two fictional, abridged short stories, "God Sees the Truth, But Waits," and "The Necklace" were used to compare the development of thinking skills according to the indicators on Bloom's Taxonomy. The first story, "God Sees the Truth, But Waits," employed traditional post-reading activities. The second story, "The Necklace" exclusively used graphic organizers to measure thinking skills. The stories were orally read in class and students responded to post-reading exercises individually and in small groups. The results showed greater writing production and slightly higher quiz scores in the stories using graphic organizer activities. The development of deeper thinking skills was marginally apparent in graphic organizer responses. In post-testing surveys, students indicated strong support for graphic organizer use rather than traditional writing activities as learning tools." --
