Book Modified Asphalt

Download or read book Modified Asphalt written by Jose Luis Rivera Armenta and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt modification is an important area in the development of new road and pavement materials. There is an urgent demand for road materials that can minimize fracture at low temperatures and increase resistance to deformation at high temperatures. The function of asphalt is to bind aggregate to protect it from water and other harmful agents. In the beginning asphalt was ideal for this purpose, but recently traffic loads have increased and environmental factors have deteriorated more rapidly than before. Asphalt is a byproduct of crude oil in the refining process, and it is considered a complex heterogeneous mixture of hydrocarbons. Asphalt modification has become an important research area, using several methods and new materials as modifiers.

Book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Book Management of Legionella in Water Systems

Download or read book Management of Legionella in Water Systems written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legionnaires' disease, a pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacterium, is the leading cause of reported waterborne disease outbreaks in the United States. Legionella occur naturally in water from many different environmental sources, but grow rapidly in the warm, stagnant conditions that can be found in engineered water systems such as cooling towers, building plumbing, and hot tubs. Humans are primarily exposed to Legionella through inhalation of contaminated aerosols into the respiratory system. Legionnaires' disease can be fatal, with between 3 and 33 percent of Legionella infections leading to death, and studies show the incidence of Legionnaires' disease in the United States increased five-fold from 2000 to 2017. Management of Legionella in Water Systems reviews the state of science on Legionella contamination of water systems, specifically the ecology and diagnosis. This report explores the process of transmission via water systems, quantification, prevention and control, and policy and training issues that affect the incidence of Legionnaires' disease. It also analyzes existing knowledge gaps and recommends research priorities moving forward.

Book Eco materials Processing Design VI

Download or read book Eco materials Processing Design VI written by Hyung Sun Kim and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book will present materials researchers and users with a wealth of new information covering the entire spectrum of ecology, eco-materials, nano-materials, bio-materials, recycling, environmental protection and energy conversion related materials. It is divided into seven sections: the first deals with photocatalysts for air pollution, water pollution, deodorizing, self-cleaning, power light sources, and the standardization of methodologies in photocatalytic reactivity. The second section covers the incorporation of end-of-life strategies into materials design as well as biomaterials. The third section covers the use of non-hazardous components as substitutes for traditional, but hazardous, components. The fourth section covers the treatment of waste materials, and the fifth section describes manufacturing via the using of more environmentally-friendly processing (eco-processing) and eco-materials design. The final section covers energy-related or energy-conversion related materials such as hydrogen-energy/fuel-cells and batteries. A book not to be missed.
