Book Inverse Scattering Problems in Optics

Download or read book Inverse Scattering Problems in Optics written by H.P. Baltes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When, in the spring of 1979, H.P. Baltes presented me with the precursor of this vo 1 ume, the book on "Inverse Source Problems in Opti cs", I expressed my gratitude in a short note, 11hich in translation, reads: "Dear Dr. Ba ltes, the mere titl e of your unexpected gift evokes memori es of a period, which, in the terminology of your own contribution, would be described as the Stone Age of the Inverse Problem. Those were pleasant times. Walter Kohn and I lived in a cave by ourselves, drew pictures on the walls, and nobody seemed to care. Now, however, Inversion has become an Industry, which I contemplate with as much bewilderment as a surviving Tasmanian aborigine gazing at a modern oil refinery with its towers, its fl ares, and the confus i ng maze of its tubes." The present volume makes me feel even more aboriginal - impossible for me to fathom its content. What I can point out, however, is one of the forgotten origins of the Inverse Scattering Problem of Quantum Mechanics: Werner Heisenberg's "S-Matrix Theory" of 1943. This grandiose scheme had the purpose of eliminating the notion of the Hamiltonian in favour of the scattering operator. If Successful, it would have done away once and for all with any kind of inverse problem.

Book An Introduction to Inverse Scattering and Inverse Spectral Problems

Download or read book An Introduction to Inverse Scattering and Inverse Spectral Problems written by Khosrow Chadan and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a clearly written introduction to three central areas of inverse problems: inverse problems in electromagnetic scattering theory, inverse spectral theory, and inverse problems in quantum scattering theory. Inverse problems, one of the most attractive parts of applied mathematics, attempt to obtain information about structures by nondestructive measurements. Based on a series of lectures presented by three of the authors, all experts in the field, the book provides a quick and easy way for readers to become familiar with the area through a survey of recent developments in inverse spectral and inverse scattering problems.

Book The Inverse Scattering Problem in Geometrical Optics and the Design of Reflectors

Download or read book The Inverse Scattering Problem in Geometrical Optics and the Design of Reflectors written by Joseph B. Keller and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inverse Scattering Problem in Geometrical Optics and the Design of Reflectors: January, 1958 1. Introduction When radiation of any type is incident upon an object some of the radiation is scattered in all directions by the object. The direct problem of the theory of scattering is that of determining the intensity of the radiation scattered in each direction when the properties of the incident radiation as well as those of the object are known. The inverse scattering problem is that of determining the properties of the scattering object when the incident radiation and the intensity of the radiation scattered in each direction are known. This latter problem has been studied extensively in atomic and nuclear physics by the methods of quantum mechanics and, to some extent, by classical mechanics. The classical mechanical solution is also applicable to the scattering of light (or other radiation obeying the laws of geometrical optics) by a region in which the index of refraction varies in any continuous spherically symmetric manner. We now propose to consider the inverse problem in geometrical optics when the scatterer is an opaque object, such as a piece of metal, with a definite boundary. We will call an object of this type a reflector or mirror. However the reflector may be placed so that either its concave or convex side is exposed to the incident radiation. When the incident radiation is a cylindrical wave a one parameter family of different reflectors is found. Book Methods of Inverse Problems in Physics

Download or read book Methods of Inverse Problems in Physics written by Dilip N. Ghosh Roy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-03-14 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interesting volume focuses on the second of the two broad categories into which problems of physical sciences fall-direct (or forward) and inverse (or backward) problems. It emphasizes one-dimensional problems because of their mathematical clarity. The unique feature of the monograph is its rigorous presentation of inverse problems (from quantum scattering to vibrational systems), transmission lines, and imaging sciences in a single volume. It includes exhaustive discussions on spectral function, inverse scattering integral equations of Gel'fand-Levitan and Marcenko, Povzner-Levitan and Levin transforms, Møller wave operators and Krein's functionals, S-matrix and scattering data, and inverse scattering transform for solving nonlinear evolution equations via inverse solving of a linear, isospectral Schrodinger equation and multisoliton solutions of the K-dV equation, which are of special interest to quantum physicists and mathematicians. The book also gives an exhaustive account of inverse problems in discrete systems, including inverting a Jacobi and a Toeplitz matrix, which can be applied to geophysics, electrical engineering, applied mechanics, and mathematics. A rigorous inverse problem for a continuous transmission line developed by Brown and Wilcox is included. The book concludes with inverse problems in integral geometry, specifically Radon's transform and its inversion, which is of particular interest to imaging scientists. This fascinating volume will interest anyone involved with quantum scattering, theoretical physics, linear and nonlinear optics, geosciences, mechanical, biomedical, and electrical engineering, and imaging research.

Book Inverse Problems of Lidar Sensing of the Atmosphere

Download or read book Inverse Problems of Lidar Sensing of the Atmosphere written by V.E. Zuev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph undertakes to present systematically the methods for solving inverse problems of lidar sensing of the atmosphere, with emphasis on lidar techniques that are based on the use of light scattering by aerosols. The theory of multi-frequency lidar sensing, as a new method for studying the microphysical and optical characteristics of aerosol formations, is also pre sented in detail. The possibilities of this theory are illustrated by the experimental results on microstructure analysis of tropospheric and low stratospheric aerosols obtained with ground-based two- and three-frequency lidars. The lidar facilities used in these experimental studies were construc ted at the Institute of Atmospheric Optics S8 USSR Academy of Sciences. Some aspects of remote control of dispersed air pollution using lidar systems are also considered. A rigorous theory for inverting the data of polarization lidar measure ments is discussed, along with its application to remote measurement of the complex index of refraction of aerosol substances and the microstructure pa rameters of background aerosols using double-ended lidar schemes. Solutions to such important problems as the separation of contributions due to Rayleigh molecular and Mie-aerosol light scattering into the total backscatter are ob tained by using this theory. Lidar polarization measurements are shown to be useful in this case. The efficiency of the methods suggested here for inter preting the lidar polarization measurements is illustrated by experimental results on the investigation of the microphysical parameters of natural aero sols and artificial smokes using polarization nephelometers.

Book Scattering And Diffraction In Physical Optics 2nd Edition

Download or read book Scattering And Diffraction In Physical Optics 2nd Edition written by Manuel Nieto Vesperinas and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive tutorial on propagation, diffraction and scattering problems from the basic principles of physical optics. Beginning with the fundamental differential and integral equations for wavefields, the text presents an exhaustive discussion on the extinction theorem as a non-local boundary condition; this has been extensively employed for the rigorous solution of scattering and diffraction problems. There is also an in-depth presentation of the topic of scattering from rough surfaces, in particular the phenomenon of enhanced backscattering, as well as a detailed development of the angular spectrum representation of fields leading to questions on non-diffraction beams. Of key interest in near field optical microscopy and nanooptics, the S-matrix theory based on the angular spectrum for propagating components and the recently discovered properties of the S-matrix for evanescent components of wavefields are considered. In addition, the book deals with the healing effect of phase conjugation on waves, and focuses on some applications concerning the relationship with time reversal.Readers will also find discussions on image recovery from partial information data (phase problems and super-resolution problems), as well as a chapter on the fundamentals of near field optical microscopy techniques, including the hot topic of propagation in negative index media.
