Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has long been a need to introduce performing-arts enthusiasts and students to the fascinating field of iconography, both as manifested in art history and in its more pragmatic or applied forms. Yet relatively little systematic effort has been made to collect and interpret centuries of such visual evidence in the light of the best available art-historical information, combined with corroborating textual documentation and insights from the histories of performance disciplines. Aspiring iconographers of the performing arts need to be aware that there are often several levels of interpretation which great works of visual art will sustain. This book explores these levels of interpretation: a surface or literal reading, a deeper reading of the work which seeks to enter the mind of the artist and asks how and why he put a given work together, and the deepest reading of the work relating it to the artistic traditions and culture in which the artist lived. In expounding on these levels of iconographic interpretations four discourses by scholars active in the study of visual records are given in relation to traditions, techniques, and trends: performance in general (Katritzky), music (Heck), theatre (Erenstein), and dance (Smith). Effort is made to keep abreast of modern technology influencing iconographic representations as on the Internet and virtual reality.Thomas F. Heck is Professor of Musicology and Head of the Music and Dance Library at the Ohio State University.

Book Painting Music in the Sixteenth Century

Download or read book Painting Music in the Sixteenth Century written by H. Colin Slim and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Slim deals here with the several roles that music can play in the artworks of the Renaissance, looking in particular at Italian painting of the 16th century. For understandable reasons, art historians sometimes neglect the role of music and, especially, that of musical notation when studying works of art. These studies not only identify musical compositions, wholly or partially inscribed in paintings - and tapestries, ceramics, prints as well - but also seek reasons why these particular musical compositions were included and analyse their relevance to the scene depicted. Furthermore, as many of these studies show, identifying a musical composition, especially if it has a text, leads to the formation of ideas about iconographical functions and thus augments interpretations of the visual art.

Book excerpt: Music librarianship offers meaningful and fulfilling work to people from varied backgrounds. As libraries adapt to everchanging economic, demographic, cultural, and technological landscapes, it is essential for music library workers to possess a keen understanding of what is needed to remain relevant and to thrive. Whether contemplating a new career in music libraries, expanding liaison responsibilities in music, seeking paths for professional development, or feeling eager to reinvigorate a music library career, readers can turn to this book to gain practical and approachable guidance to succeed. In this substantially expanded edition of Careers in Music Librarianship III, experienced expert professionals have updated their pragmatic advice and insight from the previous edition to reflect the realities and challenges of today’s landscape. Since music library work takes place in both traditional and non-traditional settings, this edition incorporates advice on a wide range of topics not covered in earlier editions, including paraprofessional employment, liaison work, archives settings, and transitions from performance-based careers. Geared toward workers in music libraries, rather than simply to those who are, or aspire to be, librarians, this volume is intended to support people on an array of potential career paths.
