Succeeding series contain the detailed information secured by workers of the Survey, in inventory form, a separate series number being assigned to each of the executive departments (except the Department of State) and other major units of the Federal Government. 'within each series N0. 1 is a general introduction to the field organiza tion and records of the governmental agency concerned; the succeed ing numbers contain the inventory preper, separate numbers being assigned to each state in alphabetical order. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inventory of Federal Archives in the States: Series II., The Federal Courts, No. 20, Massachusetts The State of Massachusetts, excluding the district of Maine, was constituted a Judicial district in the Federal system.by the act of September 24, 1789. Since that time it has remained a single district without divisions, and its principal seat has always been at Boston. For a time regular sessions of the district court, though not of the circuit court, were also held at Salem. Terms of both courts were instituted at Springfield by an act of march 2, 1909, which directed, moreover, that a deputy clerk should be appointed to reside and keep an office there; but Boston continued to be the dcsitory of the courts' records; and an act of May 1, 1922 expressly stipulated that all writs, precepts, and processes Should be returnable to Boston and that all court papers Should be kept in the clerk's office there unless special orders to the contrary were issued by the court. The act of 1922 also provided that regular sessions of the district court should be held at New Bedford and in 1926 Worcester was added to the list of places where the court Should sit.
