Book Invasive Exotic Plant Monitoring at Big Spring Pines Natural Area Chubb Hollow Long Bay Field and Long Bay at Ozark National Scenic Riverways Year 1 2009

Download or read book Invasive Exotic Plant Monitoring at Big Spring Pines Natural Area Chubb Hollow Long Bay Field and Long Bay at Ozark National Scenic Riverways Year 1 2009 written by Mary F. Short and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-09-14 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During surveys in 2009, we documented seven invasive exotic plant taxa in the Big Spring Pines Natural Area, Chubb Hollow, Long Bay Field and Long Bay at Ozark National Scenic Riverways. All species were known to occur on the park. The most widespread and abundant of the exotic plant species observed included Johnsongrass, ground ivy and Nepalase browntop. Each of these species covered seven or more acres in the park. In general, several invasive exotic plants are a major problem in the study area at Ozark National Scenic Riverways, but successful control is possible for a large group of species. The acreage estimates presented in the report may be used to plan management activities leading to control of exotic plants and the accomplishment of GPRA goal IA1b.

This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ozark National Scenic Riverways includes 80,785 acres along the Current and Jack's Fork Rivers in Shannon, Carter, Dent, and Texas counties in Missouri. Located in the Current River Hills subsection of the Ozark Highlands physiographic province (Nigh and Schroeder 2002), the park protects numerous springs and 10 natural areas. The natural areas in the park are designated under the auspices of the Missouri Department of Conservation. Natural areas are selected to represent rare or exemplary relatively undisturbed assemblages of animals, plants, and physical features. For this reason, invasive plant management on the park is typically prioritized towards these areas.

In this report, we use the term invasive exotic plant to refer to plants that are not native to the park and that are presumed to pose environmental harm to native plant populations and/or communities based on a review of numerous state and regional invasive exotic plant lists. The great majority of the introductory text was taken from Welch and Geissler (2007) with slight modification.

Book excerpt: Invasive exotic species fragment native ecosys-tems, displace native plants and animals, and alter ecosystem function. Invasive species are second only to habitat loss as threats to global biodiver-sity (Scott and Wilcove 1998) and represent one of the most serious threats to natural ecosystem integrity (NRC 2002).

Book Invasive Exotic Plant Monitoring at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site

Download or read book Invasive Exotic Plant Monitoring at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site written by National Park Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During surveys in 2006, we documented 25 invasive exotic plant taxa in the restored prairie at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. Sweetclover and reed canarygrass were widespread and abundant at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. Sweetclover was very prevalent in the western half of the prairie, is established on at least 44 acres, and was found in 84% of search units. Reed canarygrass covered at least 4 acres and occupied 50% of the search units. Out of the 25 invasive exotic plants, 20 plants each occurred on less than one acre. In general, several invasive exotic plants are a major problem at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site, but successful control is possible for a large group of species. We suggest the development of a plan to manage sweetclover in order to maintain the composition of a relatively diverse prairie. The acreage estimates presented in the report may also be used to plan management activities leading to control of exotic plants and the accomplishment of GPRA goal IA1b.

This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous studies have shown that invasive non-native plants are the biggest threat to biological diversity, are a threat to habitat de-struction, and aff ect the value of many pub-lic and privately owned lands (D'Antonio et al. 2004; Vanderhoof et al. 2009). National parks, established in part to preserve native plants and animals, are seeing native plant presence decrease as the number of inva-sive species increases at the rate of nearly two hectares per day (Crimmins et al. 2008).

This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During surveys in 2006, we documented 11 invasive exotic plant taxa at Homestead National Monument of America. Invasive exotic plants occurred in the restored prairies and the forest at the monument. Smooth brome, Osage orange, reed canarygrass, and white mulberry were widespread and abundant. We estimated that each of these plant species covered at least three acres on the monument. Five species occupied less than 0.1 acre. In general, several invasive exotic plants that are difficult to manage are a moderate problem at Homestead National Monument of America, but successful control is possible for a large group of species. The acreage estimates presented in the report may be used to plan management activities leading to control of exotic plants and the accomplishment of GPRA goal IA1b.

  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Bunker written by Bradley Garrett and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since prehistory, bunkers have been built as protection from cataclysmic social and environmental forces, and as places of power and transformation. Today, the bunker has become the extreme expression of our greatest fears- from pandemics to climate change and nuclear war. And once you look, it doesn't take long to start seeing bunkers everywhere. In Bunker, acclaimed urban explorer and cultural geographer Bradley Garrett explores the global and rapidly growing movement of 'prepping' for social and environmental collapse, or 'Doomsday'. From the 'dread merchants' hustling safe spaces in the American mid-West to eco-fortresses in Thailand, from geoscrapers to armoured mobile bunkers, Bunker is a brilliant, original and never less than deeply disturbing story from the frontlines of the way we live now, an illuminating reflection on our age of disquiet and dread that brings it into new, sharp focus. The bunker, Garrett shows, is all around us, in malls, airports, gated communities, the vehicles we drive. Most of all, he shows, it's in our minds.
