Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hilbert's talk at the second International Congress of 1900 in Paris marked the beginning of a new era in the calculus of variations. A development began which, within a few decades, brought tremendous success, highlighted by the 1929 theorem of Ljusternik and Schnirelman on the existence of three distinct prime closed geodesics on any compact surface of genus zero, and the 1930/31 solution of Plateau's problem by Douglas and Radò. The book gives a concise introduction to variational methods and presents an overview of areas of current research in this field. This new edition has been substantially enlarged, a new chapter on the Yamabe problem has been added and the references have been updated. All topics are illustrated by carefully chosen examples, representing the current state of the art in their field.

Book excerpt: Modern Control Engineering focuses on the methodologies, principles, approaches, and technologies employed in modern control engineering, including dynamic programming, boundary iterations, and linear state equations. The publication fist ponders on state representation of dynamical systems and finite dimensional optimization. Discussions focus on optimal control of dynamical discrete-time systems, parameterization of dynamical control problems, conjugate direction methods, convexity and sufficiency, linear state equations, transition matrix, and stability of discrete-time linear systems. The text then tackles infinite dimensional optimization, including computations with inequality constraints, gradient method in function space, quasilinearization, computation of optimal control-direct and indirect methods, and boundary iterations. The book takes a look at dynamic programming and introductory stochastic estimation and control. Topics include deterministic multivariable observers, stochastic feedback control, stochastic linear-quadratic control problem, general calculation of optimal control by dynamic programming, and results for linear multivariable digital control systems. The publication is a dependable reference material for engineers and researchers wanting to explore modern control engineering.

Placidi: Variational principles are a powerful tool also for formulating field theories. - F. dell'Isola, P. Seppecher, A. Madeo: Beyond Euler-Cauchy Continua. The structure of contact actions in N-th gradient generalized continua: a generalization of the Cauchy tetrahedron argument. - B. Bourdin, G.A. Francfort: Fracture. - S. Carcaterra: New concepts in damping generation and control: theoretical formulation and industrial applications. - F. dell'Isola, P. Seppecher, A. Madeo: Fluid shock wave generation at solid-material discontinuity surfaces in porous media. Variational methods give an efficient and elegant way to formulate and solve mathematical problems that are of interest to scientists and engineers. In this book three fundamental aspects of the variational formulation of mechanics will be presented: physical, mathematical and applicative ones. The first aspect concerns the investigation of the nature of real physical problems with the aim of finding the best variational formulation suitable to those problems. The second aspect is the study of the well-posedeness of those mathematical problems which need to be solved in order to draw previsions from the formulated models. And the third aspect is related to the direct application of variational analysis to solve real engineering problems.

Book Introduction to Numerical Methods for Variational Problems

Download or read book Introduction to Numerical Methods for Variational Problems written by Hans Petter Langtangen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook teaches finite element methods from a computational point of view. It focuses on how to develop flexible computer programs with Python, a programming language in which a combination of symbolic and numerical tools is used to achieve an explicit and practical derivation of finite element algorithms. The finite element library FEniCS is used throughout the book, but the content is provided in sufficient detail to ensure that students with less mathematical background or mixed programming-language experience will equally benefit. All program examples are available on the Internet.

Book Variational and Hamiltonian Control Systems

Download or read book Variational and Hamiltonian Control Systems written by P.E. Crouch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-03-12 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph grew out of a combined effort to prove a conjecture concerning the characterization of Hamiltonian control systems in terms of their variational input-output behaviour. The main concepts and results of this monograph are contained in chapters 1 to 6. Chapter 0 gives a brief introduction to Hamiltonian control systems, with particular emphasis on the relations between physical and control theoretical notions. Indeed, the study of Hamiltonian control systems is one of the places where (theoretical) physics and systems and control theory meet. We conclude the monograph with chapter 7 discussing some possible extensions to the theory presented, as well as some open problems.

Book Variational Methods in Theoretical Mechanics

Download or read book Variational Methods in Theoretical Mechanics written by J.T. Oden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a textbook written for use in a graduate-level course for students of mechanics and engineering science. It is designed to cover the essential features of modern variational methods and to demonstrate how a number of basic mathematical concepts can be used to produce a unified theory of variational mechanics. As prerequisite to using this text, we assume that the student is equipped with an introductory course in functional analysis at a level roughly equal to that covered, for example, in Kolmogorov and Fomin (Functional Analysis, Vol. I, Graylock, Rochester, 1957) and possibly a graduate-level course in continuum mechanics. Numerous references to supplementary material are listed throughout the book. We are indebted to Professor Jim Douglas of the University of Chicago, who read an earlier version of the manuscript and whose detailed suggestions were extremely helpful in preparing the final draft. He also gratefully acknowledge that much of our own research work on variational theory was supported by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research. He are indebted to Mr. Ming-Goei Sheu for help in proofreading. Finally, we wish to express thanks to Mrs. Marilyn Gude for her excellent and pains taking job of typing the manuscript. J. T. ODEN J.
