Book A Short Introduction to the Study of French Literature Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Introduction, to the Study of French Literature "Literature," say M. de Bonald, "is the expression of society." Napoleon I. could not separate literature from the life (as a whole) of peoples: their books he found "magnanimes quand le peuple est grand; vicieux, frivoles ou insenses quand il se corrompt et s'abaisse." Lamartine says of peoples: "Their memory begins with their literature." For Lemercier literature is the all-in-all, in which and from which and into which all is, comes, goes. Voltaire said: "les feuilles volantes sont la perte de la litterature." Guizot thinks that plastically and aesthetically modern letters are inferior to the old, superior as regards sentiments, profundity, and deep-set ideas. I have quoted these Frenchmen in the forefront of my Notes, as they give in their own incomparable way what we can only express as strangers, less well and, to the French, outlandishly. They have been cited, too, in their prose (original or translated). French prose, to many of us foreigners (i.e., non-French), is exquisite, nearly always. French verse generally pleases us less, often very much less. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of French Literature Instead of closing the survey, as do some books, with the decline of Romanticism, or as others, with that of Naturalism, the history of French literature has been traced down to the present day. It may be objected that living writers are too near to us to allow of an impartial and complete judgment on their works. No attempt has been made to pass any such judgment, but such an account of the French literature of today is given as may at least serve to indicate its general tendencies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book in French: Or a Practical Introduction to Reading, Writing, and Speaking the French Language Although this little book can very well be dispensed with by persons passed their childhood, yet it is believed that learners generally will find their satisfaction in the study increased, and their ultimate proficiency advanced, by commencing with it. Those, also, who find it neces sary, in a short time, to obtain such an acquaintance with the language as may be of practical use, without master ing the whole grammar, will find this book the best fitted for their purpose. Although containing but sixty-four short and simple lessons, it teaches all those principles of the language which are the most commonly used in conversation; and he who has studied it thoroughly can communicate his ideas orally in the language, and make his way in French society with little feeling of incon venience. Book A New Method of Learning the French Language Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New Method of Learning the French Language Classic Reprint written by Jean Gustave Keetels and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Method of Learning the French Language In Parts Second and Fourth, the practical predominates; in Parts Third and Fifth, the theoretical. They are so far independent of each other, that the several parts need not be studied in the order in which they stand. The arrangement, however, was suggested by a long course of experience, and adopted after mature delibera tion. The practical develops principles, elements, and facts, in natural succession, but without regard to scientific method; the theoretical embraces, in a connected view, and in systematic order, the cognate parts that have been studied separately. By this plan, the treatment of the verbs is presented to the mind, unembarrassed with other dimculties; the student, once familiar with their forms, may enter upon a course of reading-lessons, which adds variety to the exercises, and increases his interest in the study of the language. Book A Scientific French Reader

Download or read book A Scientific French Reader written by Alexander W. Herdler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Scientific French Reader: Edited With Introduction, Notes And Vocabulary There is scarcely a science wherein the French do not occupy a leading position. To introduce the American student of science to that rich technical literature of which France is so justifiably proud is the design of this Reader. Having but this purpose in view, I do not, of course, claim to supply in my selections the wants of all scientific schools. But since it is undoubtedly needful for our students to acquire some general familiarity with French technical terms and style, the selections I have made bear chiefly on subjects representative of those branches with which the student as well as the teacher is best acquainted. Electricity has received the largest share of attention in the following pages; its ever-widening future and its daily increasing sphere of usefulness to mankind seeming to warrant the prominence given it. Next come mechanics, physics, chemistry and their various industrial applications. The source from which most of the passages have been drawn is the Revue Encyclopedique, a periodical whose lucid style has done much to popularize recent scientific discoveries and inventions. It is my hope that the cuts inserted will aid the student to grasp more easily the theoretical portions of the text, and at the same time increase his interest in what may appear the more practical selections. While explaining the comparatively few idiomatic constructions met with in the text, from the nature of the case the notes contain references chiefly scientific or biographical in character. Download or read book The Royal Road to French written by Academie de Brisay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Royal Road to French: An Introduction to "the De Brisay Analytical Method of Learning the French Language" Did the reader ever ask himself how long it took him to learn his mother tongue? He did not learn it in six months. In six years he learned it very imperfectly and, perhaps even now he may not know it any too well. And yet he followed faithfully all along the Natural Method. Be devoted, not two hours a week for six months to the method, but ten hours every day of his life for years. Look at the child in your own home. From early morning till late at night he hears nothing but English spoken around him. Such sounds as Don't do that, Come here, dear, I'll whip you now, he perhaps hears fifty times a day. It is not to be wondered at that at last he becomes able, not only to understand these sounds, but to utter them himself. He hears also many other phrases of a difi'erent kind, such as a strange notion, a terrible acci dent, it's only human nature, etc., but these sounds fall without effect upon his little ears, for though he may repeat many of them, he does so after the manner of a parrot without the least conception of what the phrases mean. These words repreent abstract ideas. They are not the names of objects which the child sees and hears about him they do not indicate the relation of these objects to one another they are not the language of the child, but of the matured mind. Book A New History of French Literature

Download or read book A New History of French Literature written by Denis Hollier and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1998-08-19 with total page 1202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for the general reader, this splendid introduction to French literature from 842 A.D.—the date of the earliest surviving document in any Romance language—to the present decade is the most compact and imaginative single-volume guide available in English to the French literary tradition. In fact, no comparable work exists in either language. It is not the customary inventory of authors and titles but rather a collection of wide-angled views of historical and cultural phenomena. It sets before us writers, public figures, criminals, saints, and monarchs, as well as religious, cultural, and social revolutions. It gives us books, paintings, public monuments, even TV shows. Written by 164 American and European specialists, the essays are introduced by date and arranged in chronological order, but here ends the book’s resemblance to the usual history of literature. Each date is followed by a headline evoking an event that indicates the chronological point of departure. Usually the event is literary—the publication of an original work, a journal, a translation, the first performance of a play, the death of an author—but some events are literary only in terms of their repercussions and resonances. Essays devoted to a genre exist alongside essays devoted to one book, institutions are presented side by side with literary movements, and large surveys appear next to detailed discussions of specific landmarks. No article is limited to the “life and works” of a single author. Proust, for example, appears through various lenses: fleetingly, in 1701, apropos of Antoine Galland’s translation of The Thousand and One Nights; in 1898, in connection with the Dreyfus Affair; in 1905, on the occasion of the law on the separation of church and state; in 1911, in relation to Gide and their different treatments of homosexuality; and at his death in 1922. Without attempting to cover every author, work, and cultural development since the Serments de Strasbourg in 842, this history succeeds in being both informative and critical about the more than 1,000 years it describes. The contributors offer us a chance to appreciate not only French culture but also the major critical positions in literary studies today. A New History of French Literature will be essential reading for all engaged in the study of French culture and for all who are interested in it. It is an authoritative, lively, and readable volume.

Book French Lyrics Classic Reprint

Download or read book French Lyrics Classic Reprint written by Arthur Graves Canfield and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Lyrics This book is intended as an introduction to the reading and study of French lyric poetry. If it contribute toward making that poetry more widely known and more justly appreciated its purpose will have been fulfilled. It is rather usual among English-speaking people to think slightingly of the poetry of France, especially of her lyrics. This is not unnatural. The qualities that give French verse its distinction are very different from those that make the strength and the charm of our English lyrics. But we must guard ourselves against the conclusion that because a work is unlike those that we are accustomed to admire it is necessarily bad. There are many kinds of excellence. And this little book must have been poorly put together indeed if it fail to suggest to the reader that France possesses a wealth of lyric verse which, whatever be its shortcomings in those qualities that characterize our English lyrics, has others quite its own, both of form and of spirit, that give it a high and serious interest and no small measure of beauty and charm. The editor has sought to keep the purpose of the volume constantly in view in preparing the introduction and notes. He has hoped to supply such information as would be most helpful, if not indispensable, to the reader. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Anthology Of French Prose And Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Anthology Of French Prose And Poetry Classic Reprint written by Williamson Updike Vreeland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anthology Of French Prose And Poetry The use of anthologies as an introduction to the general study of literature, and also as a preparation for an appreciative reading of complete texts, is rapidly growing in favor. They have for a long time been used on the continent, and were recently recommended by an international congress which met at Paris. They introduce the student to works with which he may, later on, be inclined to cultivate a more intimate acquaint ance. By enabling the student to pass, in a brief interval, from the tragedy of Corneille, for example, to that of Racine, from Moli're's comedy to the comedy of Marivaux and Beaumarchais, from the prose of Rousseau to that of Bernardin de Saint - Pierre and Chateaubriand, they give him, if not a complete, at least a first-hand idea of the succession of schools of writers and of the development of the methods of composition in poetry and prose. They also encourage him to appreciate the beauty and perfection of individual pages and even paragraphs, independent of the development of the plot. And the experience in our own classes has convinced us that, for American students, to whom it is desired to give, at the same time, proficiency in reading different styles of varied degrees of difficulty and some real acquaintance with the foreign authors themselves, with their style and their thought, the use of anthologies is of the greatest importance.
