Book excerpt: Visual processing refers to the ability to perceive three-dimensional images. To accomplish this, our eyes have to be perfectly tuned and work together. Each eye perceives a slightly different image that the brain then has to unite into a single three-dimensional picture. This book explains the motor and sensory steps necessary for forming binocular and stereo vision, discusses tests to assess the different steps and describes disruptions that can occur in the eyes and the brain. Because of the sensitivity of the developing child's eye, the book also addresses the assessment of children's vision. This book will appeal to ophthalmologists, paediatricians, neurologists and other interested readers.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9400933177
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Eye Movement Disorders written by E.A.C.M. Sanders and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is perhaps no area of neuro-ophthalmology that is advancing more rapidly with respect to an understanding of its anatomy and physiology than the ocular motor system. For this reason, it is difficult not only to keep up with the latest information concerning the basic mechanisms involved in the control of eye movements but also to remain up to date regarding the pathophysiology of specific disorders of eye movement. The material in this book is derived from a two-day course on eye movements held in The Netherlands in 1986. The course was designed as an introduction to the normal ocular motor system and to disorders of eye movements and was aimed toward orthoptists, ophthalmolo gists, optometrists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons. The chapters in this book were compiled by a trio of experts in the field of eye movements and contain discussions of anatomy and physiology of the ocular motor system, techniques of examination of patients with diplopia, and pathophysiology of specific disorders of ocular motility. Many of the authors of these chapters are among the most active investigators of eye movements in the world today, and their comments thus reflect the latest information in the field. This text is both basic and com prehensive and thus has something for everyone, from the student just beginning a study of the ocular motor system to the seasoned 'veteran' who wishes to know the latest information regarding central ocular motor control mechanisms. Book Introduction to Vision Science

Download or read book Introduction to Vision Science written by Richard A. Clement and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different animals have different visual systems and so presumably have different ways of seeing. How does the way in which we see depend on the optical, neural and motor components of our visual systems? Originally published in 1993, the mathematical tools needed to answer this question are introduced in this book. Elementary linear algebra is used to describe the transformations of the stimulus that occur in the formation of the optical, neural and motor images in the human visual system. The distinctive feature of the approach is that transformations are specified with enough rigour for readers to be able to set up their own models and generate predictions from them. Underlying the approach of this book is the goal of providing a self-contained source for the derivation of the basic equations of vision science. An introductory section on vector and matrix algebra covers the mathematical techniques which are applied to both sensory and motor aspects of the visual system, and the intervening steps in the mathematical arguments are given in full, in order to make the derivation of the equations easier to follow. A subsidiary goal of this book is to demonstrate the utility of current desktop computer packages which make the application of mathematics very easy. All the numerical results were produced using only a spreadsheet or mathematics package, and example calculations are included in the text.

Book Oculomotor Systems and Perception

Download or read book Oculomotor Systems and Perception written by Sheldon M. Ebenholtz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-08-27 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 text was the first to emphasize the role of oculomotor systems in perception. Oculomotor systems that regulate eye movements play an important role in accounting for certain qualities of visual experience. They are implicated in a wide array of perceptual topics, from apparent size, depth, and distance, to apparent slant and vertical orientation. The text begins with a brief introduction to the basic characteristics of such oculomotor systems as those controlling vergence, pursuit, the vestibulo-ocular response, and saccadic eye movements. Also introduced are fundamental concepts in physiological optics. Next explored are mechanisms of perception, with a particular focus on eye movements, and the remarkably diverse implications of oculomotor research, which extend to motion sickness and life in space orbit. Insights into dysfunctional vision are also offered. This book complements standard texts on visual perception, yet may be read independently by those with a modest background in vision science.
