Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Middle Missouri Archeology In 1950 the Park Service's part in the salvage program in the Missouri Basin was placed under the general supervision of the Regional Historian. Merrill J. Mattes servedin that capacity until 1966, and he was in immediate charge of Park Service salvage activities at various times. When the re organization of the Park Service became effective in 1966, the responsibility for the Service's participation at the regional level was assigned to Wilfred Logan, a member of the Chief Archeologist's staff. The amount of work anticipated in the Missouri Basin made it advisable for the Smithsonian Institution to establish some sort of regional headquarters. The Missouri Basin Project was created as a subdivision of the River Basin Surveys in 1946. The project's offices were housed initially in the Laboratory of Anthropology of the University of Nebraska at the invitation of John L. Champe, then Director of the Lab oratory. By 195-1 the laboratory's facilities had become so crowded that first part and then all of the operations of the Missouri Basin Project were transferred to space rented at 1517 O Street in downtown Lincoln. In 1963 headquarters of the proj ect was shifted to 1835 P Street in Lincoln. Waldo R. Wedel was one of the pioneers in Plains archeology, and was a logical choice as the first head of the Missouri Basin Project. He was given part-time leave of absence from his post as Associate Curator at the us. National Museum, and went to Lincoln in 1946 to begin laying the ground work for the Smithsonian's salvage program in the Missouri Basin. For the next 3 years Wedel spent his summers in the West and returned to his regular duties in Washington during the winter. Paul L. Cooper served as Wedel's deputy during his absences. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Antiquities of Central and South-Eastern Missouri During the first season the work here dealt with extended along the Missouri river from the Gasconade to Moreau creek on the south side, and from Cedar creek to Easley on the north. The second season's work began at Easley and was followed out to the south west part of Howard county, thence into Saline county; the mounds opposite Kansas City were next examined; some investigations were made in Pike county; and work for the year closed in the south eastern part of the State. On subsequent pages will be found a list of localities of archeological interest in various parts of the State, derived partly from personal investigations, and partly from the reports of numerous persons famil iar with the regions named; this list is necessarily incomplete. The owners of many of these remains have granted permission for their exploration, and it is probable that similar leave can be readily obtained for others. In very few instances was the privilege of excavating refused unless there were good and sufficient reasons for the refusal. As some words have several meanings, dependent on the connec tion in which they are used, certain terms appearing frequently Should be explained to prevent misapprehension or confusion on the part of the reader. Book The Prehistory of Missouri

Download or read book The Prehistory of Missouri written by Michael John O'Brien and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prehistory of Missouri is a fascinating examination of the objects that were made, used, and discarded or lost by Missouri's prehistoric inhabitants over a period of more than eleven thousand years. Missouri's numerous vegetation zones and its diverse topography encompassed extreme variations, forcing prehistoric populations to seek a wide range of adaptations to the natural environment. As a result, Missouri's archaeological record is highly complex, and it has not been fully understood despite the vast amount of fieldwork that has been conducted within the state's borders. In this groundbreaking account, Michael J. O'Brien and W. Raymond Wood explore the array of artifacts that have been found in Missouri, pinpointing minute variations in form. They have documented the ranges in age and distribution of the individual forms, explaining why certain forms persisted while others quickly disappeared. Organized by chronological periods such as Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian, the book provides a comprehensive survey of what is currently known about Missouri's prehistoric peoples, often revealing how they made their living in an ever-changing world. The authors have applied rigorous standards of archaeological inquiry. Their main objective--demonstrating that the archaeological record of Missouri can be explained in scientific terms--is accomplished. With more than 235 line drawings and photographs, including 23 color photos, The Prehistory of Missouri will appeal to anyone interested in archaeology, particularly in the artifacts and the dates of their manufacture, as well as those interested in the dichotomy between interpretation and explanation. Intended for the amateur as well as the professional archaeologist, this book is sure to be the new standard reference on Missouri's prehistory, fulfilling current needs that extend beyond those met by Carl Chapman's earlier classic, The Archaeology of Missouri.

The most important are the St. James Bayou on the east, the Bayou St. John, Little River, and a number of small swamps and connecting streams adjoining the St. Francois River on the west. Besides these there are a number of smaller swamps parallel to and connected with them. They all sustain a heavy growth of cypress, sour gum, water locust, with some red and white maple, pin and Spanish oaks, besides a great variety of small shrubs and water plants which add every year new deposits of vegetable mould to the already rich though at present useless soil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Exploration of Jacobs Cavern: McDonald County, Missouri The Department of Archaeology of Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, through the courtesy of the news papers1 of the United States, published, in 1902, a circular letter. The purpose was to direct the attention of those especially who reside in the remoter districts to the importance of finding, preserving, and studying specimens of archaeological value. The letter was read by Mr. E. H. Jacobs, an archaeologist of Bentonville, Arkansas, whose kindness prompted him to impart to the Department his knowledge of the existence, near Bentonville, of caves, caverns, and rock-shelters affording traces of former human habitation. He also at the time sent a gift of specimens to the Depart ment from his own collection, and showed an eager interest and a desire to assist in furthering the plans of the Department for excavation. Accordingly, exploration was decided upon, and during April and Mav. 1903. Cursory examinations of several caves and shelters and a more thorough examination of Jacobs Cavern were accomplished.
