Instead of analyzing means, variances and covariances of scale scores as in the common variable-centered approach, the person-centered approach analyzes persons or objects grouped according to their characteristic patterns or configurations in contingency tables. This second edition explores the relationship between two statistical methods: log-linear modeling (LLM) and configural frequency analysis (CFA). Both methods compare expected frequencies with observed frequencies. However, while LLM searches for the underlying dependencies of the involved variables in the data (model-fitting), CFA examines significant residuals in non-fitting models. New developments in the second edition include: Configural Mediation Models, CFA with covariates, moderator CFA, and CFA modeling branches in tree-based methods. The new developments enable the use of categorical together with continuous variables, which makes CFA a very powerful statistical tool. This new edition continues to utilize R-package confreq (derived from Configural Frequency Analysis), much updated since the first edition and newly adjusted to the new R base program 4.0. An electronic supplement is now available with 18 R-scripts and many datasets.

Book excerpt: Single case experimental designs (SCEDs) have found their place among a range of fields including psychology, education, and medicine. SCEDs provide rigorous experimental evaluation of treatment effects. Currently, SCED evaluation methods, such as visual analysis and effect size estimation statistics, provide evidence for determining treatment effects. Although useful, best practices for SCED data analysis are debated. Configural frequency analysis (CFA) is introduced as a statistical method for the analysis of data from SCEDs. This research compared CFA statistical significance results to non-overlap SCED analysis methods that do and do not provide for statistical significance, as well as visual analysis methods. As there are currently no agreed upon best methods for the analysis of data obtained by SCEDs, it was important to explore additional statistical methods to aid researchers choosing to utilize SCEDs. CFA was compared to 5 non-overlap treatment effect evaluation methods that provide statistical significance and effect size values, 5 methods that only provide for effect size values, and visual analysis performed by 6 doctoral (PhD) students trained in SCEDs. A review of 23 years of The Journal of Behavior Therapy and The Journal of Behavior Modification resulted in 168 SCED data sets for comparison methods. Graphs were analyzed using each non-overlap effect size procedure as well as CFA. Results suggest that CFA aligned well with existing statistical significance calculations. Visual analysis appeared to align with simple non-overlap effect size methods rather than with CFA calculations, hinting at the importance of including statistical significance when evaluating treatment effects. Overall, this research found that CFA performed well when compared to other SCED data analysis techniques. Developmentalists aim to describe regularities in individuals' change and development across time, to explain the processes and mechanisms that are involved in producing change and regularity, and eventually, to design strategies for optimization and modification of developmental pathways. Although the role of contexts has always been of central concern for these purposes, it is nevertheless quite surprising to note that compared to the effort devoted to individuals, relatively little attention has been paid to the study of the nature and organization of their contexts. This volume is an exploration of the idea that how we describe and explain human development will be closely tied to our understanding of what contexts are, how individuals and contexts become influential for one another, what contexts do to and with individuals, and how contexts and their influences change themselves across time. A major theme is whether the traditional dichotomy between individuals and their contexts may be artificial, perhaps culturally biased, and after psychologists have adhered to it for about a century, may have become an impediment to increasing our understanding of developmental processes. With this volume, the editors contribute a serious consideration of development and systematic change to emerging models of person-context relations, and provide suggestions about how it may be possible to incorporate these notions in developmental research and theorizing.
