Book Configural Frequency Analysis

Download or read book Configural Frequency Analysis written by Alexander von Eye and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book provides a comprehensive and detailed coverage of configural frequency analysis (CFA), the most useful method of analysis of categorical data in person-oriented research. It presents the foundations, methods, and models of CFA and features numerous empirical data examples from a range of disciplines that can be reproduced by the readers. It also addresses computer applications, including relevant R packages and modules. Configural frequency analysis is a statistical method that allows the processing of important and interesting questions in categorical data. The perspective of CFA differs from the usual perspective of relations among variables; its focus is on patterns of variable categories that stand out with respect to specific hypotheses, and as such, CFA allows for testing numerous substantive hypotheses. The book describes the origins of CFA and their relation to chi-square analysis as well as the developments that are based on log-linear modeling. The models covered range from simple models of variable independence to complex models that are needed when causal hypotheses are tested. Empirical data examples are provided for each model. New models are introduced for person-oriented mediation analysis and locally optimized time series analysis, and new results concerning the characteristics of CFA methods are bolstered using Monte Carlo simulations. Primarily intended for researchers and students in the social and behavioral sciences, the book will also appeal to anyone who deals with categorical data from a person-centered perspective.

Book Introduction to Configural Frequency Analysis

Download or read book Introduction to Configural Frequency Analysis written by Alexander von Eye and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-05-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive introduction to configural frequency analysis, its rationale, and various modifications. When more individuals than expected display a pattern of characteristics, these individuals belong to a type. When fewer individuals than expected display a pattern they belong to an antitype. This book deals with methods that focus on groups of subjects in contingency tables. A many-faceted statistical method, CFA is useful whenever categorical variables are analyzed. The original contribution of this text is the linking of CFA to log-linear modeling and the general linear model, enabling the reader to relate CFA to a well-known statistical background.

Book Configural Frequency Analysis

Download or read book Configural Frequency Analysis written by Alexander von Eye and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Configural Frequency Analysis (CFA) provides an up-to-the-minute comprehensive introduction to its techniques, models, and applications. Written in a formal yet accessible style, actual empirical data examples are used to illustrate key concepts. Step-by-step program sequences are used to show readers how to employ CFA methods using commercial software packages, such as SAS, SPSS, SYSTAT, S-Plus, or those written specifically to perform CFA. CFA is an important method for analyzing results involved with categorical and longitudinal data. It allows one to answer the question of whether individual cells or groups of cells of cross-classifications differ significantly from expectations. The expectations are calculated using methods employed in log-linear modeling or a priori information. It is the only statistical method that allows one to make statements about empty areas in the data space. Applied and or person-oriented researchers, statisticians, and advanced students interested in CFA and categorical and longitudinal data will find this book to be a valuable resource. Developed since 1969, this method is now used by a large number of researchers around the world in a variety of disciplines, including psychology, education, medicine, and sociology. Configural Frequency Analysis will serve as an excellent text for courses on configural frequency analysis, categorical variable analysis, or analysis of contingency tables. Prerequisites include an understanding of descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, statistical model fitting, and some understanding of categorical data analysis and matrix algebra.

Book Person Centered Methods

Download or read book Person Centered Methods written by Mark Stemmler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensible overview of the statistical approach called the person-centered method. Instead of analyzing means, variances and covariances of scale scores as in the common variable-centered approach, the person-centered approach analyzes persons or objects grouped according to their characteristic patterns or configurations in contingency tables. This second edition explores the relationship between two statistical methods: log-linear modeling (LLM) and configural frequency analysis (CFA). Both methods compare expected frequencies with observed frequencies. However, while LLM searches for the underlying dependencies of the involved variables in the data (model-fitting), CFA examines significant residuals in non-fitting models. New developments in the second edition include: Configural Mediation Models, CFA with covariates, moderator CFA, and CFA modeling branches in tree-based methods. The new developments enable the use of categorical together with continuous variables, which makes CFA a very powerful statistical tool. This new edition continues to utilize R-package confreq (derived from Configural Frequency Analysis), much updated since the first edition and newly adjusted to the new R base program 4.0. An electronic supplement is now available with 18 R-scripts and many datasets.

Book Advances in Configural Frequency Analysis

Download or read book Advances in Configural Frequency Analysis written by Alexander von Eye and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2010-04-20 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using real-world data examples, this authoritative book shows how to use the latest configural frequency analysis (CFA) techniques to analyze categorical data. Some of the techniques are presented here for the first time. In contrast to methods that focus on relationships among variables, such as log-linear modeling, CFA allows researchers to evaluate differences and change at the level of individual cells in a table. Illustrated are ways to identify and test for cell configurations that are either consistent with or contrary to hypothesized patterns (the types and antitypes of CFA); control for potential covariates that might influence observed results; develop innovative prediction models; address questions of moderation and mediation; and analyze intensive longitudinal data. The book also describes free software applications for executing CFA.

Book The Application of Configural Frequency Analysis Using Stirling s Formula to Single Case Designs

Download or read book The Application of Configural Frequency Analysis Using Stirling s Formula to Single Case Designs written by Marc Aaron Patience and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Single case experimental designs (SCEDs) have found their place among a range of fields including psychology, education, and medicine. SCEDs provide rigorous experimental evaluation of treatment effects. Currently, SCED evaluation methods, such as visual analysis and effect size estimation statistics, provide evidence for determining treatment effects. Although useful, best practices for SCED data analysis are debated. Configural frequency analysis (CFA) is introduced as a statistical method for the analysis of data from SCEDs. This research compared CFA statistical significance results to non-overlap SCED analysis methods that do and do not provide for statistical significance, as well as visual analysis methods. As there are currently no agreed upon best methods for the analysis of data obtained by SCEDs, it was important to explore additional statistical methods to aid researchers choosing to utilize SCEDs. CFA was compared to 5 non-overlap treatment effect evaluation methods that provide statistical significance and effect size values, 5 methods that only provide for effect size values, and visual analysis performed by 6 doctoral (PhD) students trained in SCEDs. A review of 23 years of The Journal of Behavior Therapy and The Journal of Behavior Modification resulted in 168 SCED data sets for comparison methods. Graphs were analyzed using each non-overlap effect size procedure as well as CFA. Results suggest that CFA aligned well with existing statistical significance calculations. Visual analysis appeared to align with simple non-overlap effect size methods rather than with CFA calculations, hinting at the importance of including statistical significance when evaluating treatment effects. Overall, this research found that CFA performed well when compared to other SCED data analysis techniques. Book Development of Person context Relations

Download or read book Development of Person context Relations written by Thomas A. Kindermann and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, developmental psychology has its focus on individuals. Developmentalists aim to describe regularities in individuals' change and development across time, to explain the processes and mechanisms that are involved in producing change and regularity, and eventually, to design strategies for optimization and modification of developmental pathways. Although the role of contexts has always been of central concern for these purposes, it is nevertheless quite surprising to note that compared to the effort devoted to individuals, relatively little attention has been paid to the study of the nature and organization of their contexts. This volume is an exploration of the idea that how we describe and explain human development will be closely tied to our understanding of what contexts are, how individuals and contexts become influential for one another, what contexts do to and with individuals, and how contexts and their influences change themselves across time. A major theme is whether the traditional dichotomy between individuals and their contexts may be artificial, perhaps culturally biased, and after psychologists have adhered to it for about a century, may have become an impediment to increasing our understanding of developmental processes. With this volume, the editors contribute a serious consideration of development and systematic change to emerging models of person-context relations, and provide suggestions about how it may be possible to incorporate these notions in developmental research and theorizing.
