Building on previous editions and the previous companion text, this book presents the latest research and theoretical developments in a socio-political context. All major theoretical perspectives are considered, including: classical criminology, biological and psychological positivism, labelling theories, feminist criminology, critical criminology and left realism, situation action theories, desistance theories, social control theories, the risk society, postmodern condition, and terrorism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Women’s History: Breaking Barriers and Undoing Male Centrism in K-12 Social Studies challenges and guides K-12 history teachers to incorporate comprehensive and diverse women’s history into every region and era of their history curriculum. Providing a wealth of practical examples, ideas, and lesson plans – all backed by scholarly research – for secondary and middle school classes, this book demonstrates how teachers can weave women’s history into their curriculum today. It breaks down how history is taught currently, how teachers are prepared, and what expectations are set in state standards and textbooks and then shows how teachers can use pedagogical approaches to better incorporate women’s voices into each of these realms. Each chapter explores a major barrier to teaching an inclusive history and how to overcome it, and every chapter ends with an inquiry-based lesson plan on women or using women's sources which stands counter to the way curriculum is traditionally taught, a case in point that tasks readers to realize how women have been integral to every period of history. With expert guidance from an award-winning social studies teacher, this guidebook will be important reading for middle and high school history educators. It will also be beneficial to preservice teachers, particularly within Social Studies Education and Gender Studies. Book Spiritual Identities

Download or read book Spiritual Identities written by Jo Carruthers and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays considers the return of the religious in contemporary literary studies. In the twenty-first century it is now possible to detect a new sacred 'turn' in thought and writing. For some writers, this post-secular identity plays itself out in both a recuperation of religious traditions (Catholicism, Puritanism, Judaism) and a re-invention of the religious imaginary (apophaticism, messianism, apocalypticism, fundamentalism). In literary studies, the implications of the post-secular are revitalizing critical engagement with canonical works and fuelling the reclaiming of neglected writings as questions of the construction of spiritual identities come once again to the fore.

Book The Theological Turn in Contemporary Gothic Fiction

Download or read book The Theological Turn in Contemporary Gothic Fiction written by Simon Marsden and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines theological themes and resonances in post-1970 Gothic fiction. It argues that contemporary Gothic is not simply a secularised genre, but rather one that engages creatively – and often subversively – with theological texts and traditions. This creative engagement is reflected in Gothic fiction’s exploration of theological concepts including sin and evil, Christology and the messianic, resurrection, eschatology and apocalypse. Through readings of fiction by Gothic and horror writers including Stephen King, Joyce Carol Oates, Peter Straub, William Peter Blatty and others, this book demonstrates that Christianity continues to haunt the Gothic imagination and that the genre’s openness to the mysterious, numinous and non-rational opens space in which to explore religious beliefs and experiences less easily accessible to more overtly realist forms of representation. The book offers a new perspective on contemporary Gothic fiction that will be of interest to students and scholars of contemporary Gothic and of the relationship between literature and religion more generally.

Book Romantic Biography

Download or read book Romantic Biography written by Arthur Bradley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romantic biography lives. Despite the so-called 'death of the author', popular interest in the lives of the major Romantic writers has reached a new peak. Romantic Biography brings together Romantic biographers and critics to consider some of the key questions surrounding this publishing phenomenon. What precisely is Romantic biography? What is the relationship between it and Romantic writings more generally? And to what extent is Romantic biography itself the product of Romantic ideas about the self, time and creativity? Romantic Biography examines a range of canonical and non-canonical biographical subjects from a variety of practical and theoretical standpoints. Michael O'Neill opens the collection with an analysis of the relationship between Romantic biography and Romantic poetry. Jonathan Bate, Mark Storey and Kenneth R. Johnston reassess Clare, Southey and Wordsworth from their position as authors of recent/forthcoming biographies of the poets. Joe Bray and Alan Rawes explore the Romantic assumptions at work within contemporary biographies of Austen and Byron. Gerard Carruthers, Julian North, Jennifer Wallace and Arthur Bradley put biographies of Burns, Scott, Coleridge, Byron, Keats and Shelley into the context of contemporary historicist and theoretical ideas about national and gender identity, the body and difference. Ralph Pite brings the collection to a close with a further examination of the vexed question of Romantic biography's relation to Romanticism itself. Romantic Biography is a major new survey of Romantic life-writing and an important contribution to biographical studies more generally.

Download or read book Islam and the West written by Sadia Zulfiqar and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam, like the West, is not a homogenous monolith. However, Islam is most commonly represented in the West in terms of suicide bombing, suppressed and veiled women, and internal and external conflict. These depictions of Islam suggest that the relationship between Islam and the West is, and has always been, one of hostility and hatred. However, this collection locates threads of connection and 'love' between Islam and the West, and argues that it is important to bring them to the forefront i ...

Book The Bloomsbury Handbook of Modernist Archives

Download or read book The Bloomsbury Handbook of Modernist Archives written by Jamie Callison and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a broad, definitive account of how the 'archival turn' in humanities scholarship has shaped modernist studies, this book also functions as an ongoing 'practitioner's toolkit' (including useful bibliographical resources) and a guide to avenues for future work. Archival work in modernist studies has revolutionised the discipline in the past two decades, fuelled by innovative and ambitious scholarly editing projects and a growing interest in fresh types of archival sources and evidence that can re-contextualise modernist writing. Several theoretical trends have prompted this development, including the focus on compositional process within genetic manuscript studies, the emphasis on book history, little magazines, and wider publishing contexts, and the emphasis on new material evidence and global and 'non-canonical' authors and networks within the 'New Modernist Studies'. This book provides a guide to the variety of new archival research that will point to fresh avenues and connect the methodologies and resources being developed across modernist studies. Offering a variety of single-author case studies on recent archival developments and editing projects, including Samuel Beckett, Hart Crane, H.D., James Joyce, Dorothy Richardson, May Sinclair and Virginia Woolf, it also offers a range of thematic essays that examine an array of underused sources as well as the challenges facing archival researchers of modernism
