Download or read book Symmetry written by R. McWeeny and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symmetry: An Introduction to Group Theory and its Application is an eight-chapter text that covers the fundamental bases, the development of the theoretical and experimental aspects of the group theory. Chapter 1 deals with the elementary concepts and definitions, while Chapter 2 provides the necessary theory of vector spaces. Chapters 3 and 4 are devoted to an opportunity of actually working with groups and representations until the ideas already introduced are fully assimilated. Chapter 5 looks into the more formal theory of irreducible representations, while Chapter 6 is concerned largely with quadratic forms, illustrated by applications to crystal properties and to molecular vibrations. Chapter 7 surveys the symmetry properties of functions, with special emphasis on the eigenvalue equation in quantum mechanics. Chapter 8 covers more advanced applications, including the detailed analysis of tensor properties and tensor operators. This book is of great value to mathematicians, and math teachers and students.

Download or read book Angular Momentum in Quantum Mechanics written by A. R. Edmonds and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-10 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a concise introduction to the angular momentum, one of the most fundamental quantities in all of quantum mechanics. Beginning with the quantization of angular momentum, spin angular momentum, and the orbital angular momentum, the author goes on to discuss the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for a two-component system. After developing the necessary mathematics, specifically spherical tensors and tensor operators, the author then investigates the 3-j, 6-j, and 9-j symbols. Throughout, the author provides practical applications to atomic, molecular, and nuclear physics. These include partial-wave expansions, the emission and absorption of particles, the proton and electron quadrupole moment, matrix element calculation in practice, and the properties of the symmetrical top molecule.
Download or read book Neither Physics nor Chemistry written by Kostas Gavroglu and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2011-10-07 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of a discipline at the intersection of physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Quantum chemistry—a discipline that is not quite physics, not quite chemistry, and not quite applied mathematics—emerged as a field of study in the 1920s. It was referred to by such terms as mathematical chemistry, subatomic theoretical chemistry, molecular quantum mechanics, and chemical physics until the community agreed on the designation of quantum chemistry. In Neither Physics Nor Chemistry, Kostas Gavroglu and Ana Simões examine the evolution of quantum chemistry into an autonomous discipline, tracing its development from the publication of early papers in the 1920s to the dramatic changes brought about by the use of computers in the 1970s. The authors focus on the culture that emerged from the creative synthesis of the various traditions of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. They examine the concepts, practices, languages, and institutions of this new culture as well as the people who established it, from such pioneers as Walter Heitler and Fritz London, Linus Pauling, and Robert Sanderson Mulliken, to later figures including Charles Alfred Coulson, Raymond Daudel, and Per-Olov Löwdin. Throughout, the authors emphasize six themes: epistemic aspects and the dilemmas caused by multiple approaches; social issues, including academic politics, the impact of textbooks, and the forging of alliances; the contingencies that arose at every stage of the developments in quantum chemistry; the changes in the field when computers were available to perform the extraordinarily cumbersome calculations required; issues in the philosophy of science; and different styles of reasoning.
Download or read book Symmetry of Many Electron Systems written by I. G. Kaplan and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symmetry of Many-Electron Systems discusses the group-theoretical methods applied to physical and chemical problems. Group theory allows an individual to analyze qualitatively the elements of a certain system in scope. The text evaluates the characteristics of the Schrodinger equations. It is proved that some groups of continuous transformation from the Lie groups are useful in identifying conditions and in developing wavefunctions. A section of the book is devoted to the utilization of group-theoretical methods in quantal calculations on many-electron systems. The focus is on the use of group-theoretical methods to the classification and calculation of states of molecule. A chapter of the book gives a comprehensive discussion of the fractional parentage method. This application is used in atomic and nuclear spectroscopy. The method of employing coordinate wave functions is explained. The standard Young-Yamanouchi orthogonal representation is presented completely. The book will provide useful guides for physicists, chemists, engineers, students, and researchers in the field of physics.

Download or read book Exploiting Symmetry in Applied and Numerical Analysis written by Eugene L. Allgower and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1993 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symmetry plays an important role in theoretical physics, applied analysis, classical differential equations, and bifurcation theory. Although numerical analysis has incorporated aspects of symmetry on an ad hoc basis, there is now a growing collection of numerical analysts who are currently attempting to use symmetry groups and representation theory as fundamental tools in their work. This book contains the proceedings of an AMS-SIAM Summer Seminar in Applied Mathematics, held in 1992 at Colorado State University. The seminar, which drew about 100 scientists from around the world, was intended to stimulate the systematic incorporation of symmetry and group theoretical concepts into numerical methods. The papers in this volume have been refereed and will not be published elsewhere.
