Download or read book INTRODUCING UFOs Full Colour Version written by Philip Mantle Ronald Kinsella and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCING UFOs - A Young Person's GuideFULL COLOUR VERSIONWritten by Philip Mantle and illustrated by Ronald Kinsella. The UFO subject as we know it came to the public's attention on June 24th 1947 when private pilot Kenneth Arnold, flying over the Cascade Mountains in the USA, witnessed a formation of objects that he could not identify. Speaking later to a journalist regarding the encounter, Arnold was asked how this formation of objects moved through the air, and his response was: "Like skipping a saucer across a pond." From that moment on, the coined phrase 'Flying Saucer' was born.Since that time, the UFO subject has been studied by a variety of military agencies, scientists and of course civilian run organisations. As a result, there are thousands of UFO books and magazines available, plus countless news items and documentaries on television, social media and of course online. Very few of these cater for a younger audience, so that is where our book 'INTRODUCING UFOs - A Young Person's Guide' steps in. I think the title says it all.In this book, we look at selected case histories from the 1940's onwards. These documentations are not meant to be in-depth, but rather to illustrate the case in as brief a way as possible, without missing any salient points. The case histories chosen for this book come from around the world and are accompanied by illustrations, documents, photographs and maps. Each chapter is split into decades and comes complete with its own piece of unique artwork. The book also provides an overview on what to do if you encounter a UFO and discusses, in brief, some of the many theories put forward to try and explain the phenomenon. This book is designed with a young adolescent audience in mind and comes complete with a photo section, with a series of authentic UFO photographs from around the world. The UFO phenomena shows no signs of disappearing, hence a book that we hope might help the next generation of researchers in their quest for answers. This book has a selection of new and unique illustrations and a selection of UFO photographs from around the world. This is the full colour version of the book. A black and white version is also in print.ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR: Ronald Kinsella (illustrator): Ronald Kinsella is an artist and author. Book Monsters Aliens and Holes in the Ground Deluxe Edition

Download or read book Monsters Aliens and Holes in the Ground Deluxe Edition written by Stu Horvath and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A richly illustrated, encyclopedic deep dive into the history of roleplaying games. When Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson released Dungeons & Dragons in 1974, they created the first roleplaying game of all time. Little did they know that their humble box set of three small digest-sized booklets would spawn an entire industry practically overnight. In Monsters, Aliens, and Holes in the Ground, Stu Horvath explores how the hobby of roleplaying games, commonly known as RPGs, blossomed out of an unlikely pop culture phenomenon and became a dominant gaming form by the 2010s. Going far beyond D&D, this heavily illustrated tome covers more than three hundred different RPGs that have been published in the last five decades. Monsters, Aliens, and Holes in the Ground features (among other things) bunnies, ghostbusters, soap operas, criminal bears, space monsters, political intrigue, vampires, romance, and, of course, some dungeons and dragons. In a decade-by-decade breakdown, Horvath chronicles how RPGs have evolved in the time between their inception and the present day, offering a deep and gratifying glimpse into a hobby that has changed the way we think about games and play. The deluxe edition will include a foil-stamped cover and slipcase with a cloth binding, a ribbon, gilded edges, and an 8.5x11-inch card stock poster of the regular edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword INDIES 2005 Popular Culture Book of the Year A fresh look at the origins of our iconic immigrant flora and fauna, revealed with wit and reverence for nature Aliens live among us. Thousands of species of nonnative flora and fauna have taken up residence within U.S. borders. Our lawns sprout African grasses, our roadsides flower with European weeds, and our homes harbor Asian, European, and African pests. Misguided enthusiasts deliberately introduced carp, kudzu, and starlings. And the American cowboy spread such alien life forms as cows, horses, tumbleweed, and anthrax, supplanting and supplementing the often unexpected ways "Native" Americans influenced the environment. Aliens in the Backyard recounts the origins and impacts of these and other nonindigenous species on our environment and pays overdue tribute to the resolve of nature to survive in the face of challenge and change. In considering the new home that imported species have made for themselves on the continent, John Leland departs from those environmentalists who universally decry the invasion of outsiders. Instead Leland finds that uncovering stories of alien arrivals and assimilation is a more intriguing—and ultimately more beneficial—endeavor. Mixing natural history with engaging anecdotes, Leland cuts through problematic myths coloring our grasp of the natural world and suggests that how these alien species have reshaped our landscape is now as much a part of our shared heritage as tales of our presidents and politics. Simultaneously he poses questions about which of our accepted icons are truly American (not apple pie or Kentucky bluegrass; not Idaho potatoes or Boston ivy). Leland's ode to survival reveals how plant and animal immigrants have made the country as much an environmental melting pot as its famed melding of human cultures, and he invites us to reconsider what it means to be American.

Book excerpt: A picture-book account of one of the most famous pieces of radio history! * “Sandwiched between a look at Depression-era radios and a set of fanciful period advertisements, McCarthy delivers a semi-serious account of the 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast, illustrating both passages from the script and briefly told descriptions of widespread panic with smudgy cartoon scenes featuring bug-eyed monsters and equally bug-eyed people. The author closes with a substantial note that analyzes the broadcast’ immediate and long-term effects, points out that the announcers repeatedly admitted that they were presenting a drama during the broadcast, mentions several later revivals here and internationally and notes the response of H.G. Wells himself to the original production. She has also set up an invitingly designed Web site with an array of relevant links.” —Kirkus Reviews, Starred An ALA–ALSC Notable Children’s Book A School Library Journal Best Book of the Year An IRA–CBC Children’s Choice A Kirkus Reviews Editor’s Choice A 2006 New York Public Library 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing
