Book Introduction to Algebraic Independence Theory

Download or read book Introduction to Algebraic Independence Theory written by Yuri V. Nesterenko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last five years there has been very significant progress in the development of transcendence theory. A new approach to the arithmetic properties of values of modular forms and theta-functions was found. The solution of the Mahler-Manin problem on values of modular function j(tau) and algebraic independence of numbers pi and e^(pi) are most impressive results of this breakthrough. The book presents these and other results on algebraic independence of numbers and further, a detailed exposition of methods created in last the 25 years, during which commutative algebra and algebraic geometry exerted strong catalytic influence on the development of the subject.

Book Integrated Arithmetic and Basic Algebra

Download or read book Integrated Arithmetic and Basic Algebra written by Bill E. Jordan and published by Addison Wesley Publishing Company. This book was released on 2000-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A combination of a basic mathematics or prealgebra text with an introductory algebra text, Integrated Arithmetic and Basic Algebra provides a unique, integrated presentation of the material for these courses that is extremely beneficial to students. As opposed to traditional texts that present arithmetic at the beginning and algebra at the end, this text integrates the two whenever possible, so that students see how concepts are interrelated rather than learning them in isolation and missing the big picture. The ideas and algorithms shared by arithmetic and algebra are introduced in an arithmetic context and then developed through the corresponding algebraic concept. For example, operations with rational numbers and rational expressions are discussed together, whereas most texts discuss operations with rational numbers early on and operations with rational expressions much later. The Jordan/Palow text helps students recognize algebra as a natural extension of arithmetic using variables. This approach aligns directly with NCTM and AMATYC standards, which suggest playing upon students' previous knowledge to teach new concepts.

Book From Groups to Categorial Algebra

Download or read book From Groups to Categorial Algebra written by Dominique Bourn and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a thorough and entirely self-contained, in-depth introduction to a specific approach to group theory, in a large sense of that word. The focus lie on the relationships which a group may have with other groups, via “universal properties”, a view on that group “from the outside”. This method of categorical algebra, is actually not limited to the study of groups alone, but applies equally well to other similar categories of algebraic objects. By introducing protomodular categories and Mal’tsev categories, which form a larger class, the structural properties of the category Gp of groups, show how they emerge from four very basic observations about the algebraic litteral calculus and how, studied for themselves at the conceptual categorical level, they lead to the main striking features of the category Gp of groups. Hardly any previous knowledge of category theory is assumed, and just a little experience with standard algebraic structures such as groups and monoids. Examples and exercises help understanding the basic definitions and results throughout the text.

Download or read book Algebra written by Siegfried Bosch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material presented here can be divided into two parts. The first, sometimes referred to as abstract algebra, is concerned with the general theory of algebraic objects such as groups, rings, and fields, hence, with topics that are also basic for a number of other domains in mathematics. The second centers around Galois theory and its applications. Historically, this theory originated from the problem of studying algebraic equations, a problem that, after various unsuccessful attempts to determine solution formulas in higher degrees, found its complete clarification through the brilliant ideas of E. Galois. The study of algebraic equations has served as a motivating terrain for a large part of abstract algebra, and according to this, algebraic equations are visible as a guiding thread throughout the book. To underline this point, an introduction to the history of algebraic equations is included. The entire book is self-contained, up to a few prerequisites from linear algebra. It covers most topics of current algebra courses and is enriched by several optional sections that complement the standard program or, in some cases, provide a first view on nearby areas that are more advanced. Every chapter begins with an introductory section on "Background and Overview," motivating the material that follows and discussing its highlights on an informal level. Furthermore, each section ends with a list of specially adapted exercises, some of them with solution proposals in the appendix. The present English edition is a translation and critical revision of the eighth German edition of the Algebra book by the author. The book appeared for the first time in 1993 and, in later years, was complemented by adding a variety of related topics. At the same time it was modified and polished to keep its contents up to date.

Book Introduction to Abstract Algebra

Download or read book Introduction to Abstract Algebra written by W. Keith Nicholson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-02-23 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for the Third Edition ". . . an expository masterpiece of the highest didactic value that has gained additional attractivity through the various improvements . . ."—Zentralblatt MATH The Fourth Edition of Introduction to Abstract Algebra continues to provide an accessible approach to the basic structures of abstract algebra: groups, rings, and fields. The book's unique presentation helps readers advance to abstract theory by presenting concrete examples of induction, number theory, integers modulo n, and permutations before the abstract structures are defined. Readers can immediately begin to perform computations using abstract concepts that are developed in greater detail later in the text. The Fourth Edition features important concepts as well as specialized topics, including: The treatment of nilpotent groups, including the Frattini and Fitting subgroups Symmetric polynomials The proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra using symmetric polynomials The proof of Wedderburn's theorem on finite division rings The proof of the Wedderburn-Artin theorem Throughout the book, worked examples and real-world problems illustrate concepts and their applications, facilitating a complete understanding for readers regardless of their background in mathematics. A wealth of computational and theoretical exercises, ranging from basic to complex, allows readers to test their comprehension of the material. In addition, detailed historical notes and biographies of mathematicians provide context for and illuminate the discussion of key topics. A solutions manual is also available for readers who would like access to partial solutions to the book's exercises. Introduction to Abstract Algebra, Fourth Edition is an excellent book for courses on the topic at the upper-undergraduate and beginning-graduate levels. The book also serves as a valuable reference and self-study tool for practitioners in the fields of engineering, computer science, and applied mathematics.

Download or read book Further Linear Algebra written by T.S. Blyth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the introductory courses on linear algebra develop the basic theory of finite dimensional vector spaces, and in so doing relate the notion of a linear mapping to that of a matrix. Generally speaking, such courses culminate in the diagonalisation of certain matrices and the application of this process to various situations. Such is the case, for example, in our previous SUMS volume Basic Linear Algebra. The present text is a continuation of that volume, and has the objective of introducing the reader to more advanced properties of vector spaces and linear mappings, and consequently of matrices. For readers who are not familiar with the contents of Basic Linear Algebra we provide an introductory chapter that consists of a compact summary of the prerequisites for the present volume. In order to consolidate the student's understanding we have included a large num ber of illustrative and worked examples, as well as many exercises that are strategi cally placed throughout the text. Solutions to the exercises are also provided. Many applications of linear algebra require careful, and at times rather tedious, calculations by hand. Very often these are subject to error, so the assistance of a com puter is welcome. As far as computation in algebra is concerned, there are several packages available. Here we include, in the spirit of a tutorial, a chapter that gives 1 a brief introduction to the use of MAPLE in dealing with numerical and algebraic problems in linear algebra.
