Book excerpt: The significance of international trade was highlighted by the leaders of the BRICS group of countries as they met for their Sixth Summit in Fortaleza, Brazil in July, 2014. The BRICS group, made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, came together calling for an Action Plan for advancing its work on trade and investment.With a cumulative global trade of 20 per cent and generating more than 40 per cent of global economic growth, the BRICS countries, and India specifically as a prominent global leader in trade, are poised to strengthen their relationship through intra-BRICS trade.This Discussion Paper, using a series of analytical tools, illustrates the trends in trade and competitiveness between the BRICS countries as well as its implications for India. Tellingly, the results indicate a complementarity in export and import products with low levels of competition, which can provide opportunities for enhanced intra-BRICS trade.A greater openness between the BRICS countries has the potential to yield gains for all five of the member countries. Specifically for India, which showed a comparative advantage in certain products, it should re-orient its Focused Market and Focused Product initiatives in light of its "new trade policy", which is expected to be announced in August 2014, to ensure greater and closer trade with its fellow BRICS members.

Book excerpt: The main aim of this research is to seek the potential for Trade liberalization between Intra-BRICS and the impact on the Rule of Law, searching for issues that are hampering or would hamper the BRICS collaboration and economic growth. If any political and legal systems or organization that implements Loyalty to the interests of the rule of law would contribute tremendously to the progress of regional or community economic growth, lack of the rule of law can seriously hinder the idea of Trade liberalization and intra-regional or intra-community trade. I am arguing that even if trade barriers are removed from trade collaboration, and if there is no loyalty to the rule of law there will still be barriers that will hinder trade liberalization. For example, if the country is very corrupt the corrupt officials could delay goods entering the country by making unnecessary excuses so that bribe could be given thereby creating uncomfortable and unfair situations and thereby stimulating difficulties for businesses not to flow freely as it was previously anticipated. The important goal of the BRICS treaty is to stimulate sustainable economic growth of the BRICS countries. I examine the contribution to the BRICS countries integration to economic growth of the countries using subservient variables GMM regression in the framework of a growth model. I found great substantial empirical affirmation for a positive economic cooperation and growth. The results of some variables showed negative impact because of the distance that exist on members of the BRICS countries which hinders perfect cooperation and economic benefits but there were positive impacts on economic cooperation.

The existing literature is focused on the economic integration of the five emerging countries, for example the economic integration theory (EIT) assumes that increasing globalization and technological progress leads to freer trade and movement of economic factors as well as to deeper integration over time. It shows that physical border is no longer a criterion for economic interdependence and integration within a group while the concerns and common interests form important factors for a new dimension of economic regionalism. The concept of economic regionalism is defined as an empirically observable process of increasing cross-border activities, cooperation and coordination within a group of countries through integration. Originally, the concept of economic regionalism has been based on economic cooperation between natural partners (neighbouring countries or countries on the same continent). But since technological progress reduced transaction costs, intercontinental and global economic integration has become important in recent decades. Geographical distance may stay important for trade flows, but intercontinental relations of emerging countries record a steady rise in trade relations. In general, regionalism could be defined as preferential cooperation among nations that are relocated in terms of geographical proximity, with certain common characteristics such as historical, cultural, political and so forth. The objective of cooperation might be economic, political, or cultural in nature. In this context, the economic regionalism is considered more autonomous, outward-oriented, comprehensive and multi-dimensional process which includes trade and economic integration, environment and social policy issues relating to security and democracy, where the nation-states and other actors play an important role.
