  • Author : Robert Crookall

Download or read book Intimations of Immortality written by Robert Crookall and published by James Clarke & Co.. This book was released on 1987-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with some intriguing evidence in favour of the belief in survival. It consists of a study of the testimonies of people who, like Lazarus of Bethany, suffered suspended animation, or pseudo-death. The conclusions that were reached by over a hundred serious investigators of the problem of survival are reviewed. Of these investigators, including psychical researchers, psychologists, physicians, surgeons, physicists, lawyers, businessmen, authors, clergymen, etc, about eighty-one percent became absolutely sure of survival, about fourteen percent were more or less convinced, and only about four per cent remained in doubt. These results preceded the publication in 1960 of the 'Palm Sunday' case by the Society for Psychical Research, representing the most convincing evidence of all. This case is discussed in some detail. Specific matters considered include possible preparations for one's own 'passing' and for the 'passing' of others, the most desirable method of disposing of a corpse, whether by cremation, burial, or embalming, etc. The hypotheses that have been advanced alternative to the survival hypothesis are given due consideration. The author concludes that survival is a 'virtual certainty'.

Book Intimations of Immortality

Download or read book Intimations of Immortality written by Gerald Leinwand and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My grandfather died when he was sixty-five, my father died at seventy. At eighty-eight, I am the eldest of three brothers all of us older than our father was at his death. Given a reasonable degree of vitality, however, I would like to live to forever. Wouldn't you? I would like to be at my grandchildren and great-grand children's weddings. Wouldn't you? I would like to see how it all comes out in the end of time, for my family, my country, for the world. Wouldn't you? Wouldn't it be great if the intellectual giants of centuries past could be with us yet. Many of them achieved their best work in literature, art, philosophy, science or mathematics at advanced ages. Wouldn't the world be a better place if the accumulated wisdo111 of these talented people could still be around to set us straight? The poet, William Wordsworth thought so when he eulogized John Milton: "Milton! thou shouldst be living at this hour: England hath need of thee: she is a fen /Of stagnant waters." With England traumatized by Napoleon, Wordsworth sought Milton's help. Surely, these greats of yesteryear could contribute to our own trauma of global terrorism. It is asserted by some that the search for immortality is pornographic. Yet, it will be remembered of the twenty-first century that a conscious effort was made to confront and perhaps conquer death. Wasserman (helped conquer sexually transmitted diseases) Salk(the anti-polio vaccine." Pornographers? Nonsense? "Death be not proud," wrote the poet, John Donne. He was right. While searching for immortality we are baffled by age. My first wife for forty-three years died of rampaging breast cancer, my second wife for six years died of virulent brain cancer. How does one make sense as to why we are attacked by Parkinson's and Alzheimers, by heart disease and cancer? Why the Holocaust? Why the terror of 9/11 ?Thus, the young may see things as they are and ask, "Why?" while the old may still dream of things that never were and ask, "Why not?"

Book We Give Our Hearts to Dogs to Tear

Download or read book We Give Our Hearts to Dogs to Tear written by Alston Chase and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a hauntingly beautiful memoir about small dogs in Big Sky country, this book is a wise account of the relationships among dogs, humans, and the land that surrounds them. It is the story of successive generations of Jack Russell terriers, their animal friends, and their human companions. Alston Chase searches for the immortality of dogs, what makes them unique companions, and why we humans willingly give them our hearts knowing that someday they will be broken. This book will resonate with anyone who has ever loved a dog. Chase muses that dogs are the embodiment of spirit over mortality and through the window of their brief lives we glimpse eternity. This eternal includes the Earth, the land, and the bonds forged between people and dogs over thousands of years. Chase sees threats in the decline of rural life, unbridled urbanization, and in dog breeders who judge by conformation to breed standards and fashion rather than ability and health. An uplifting tribute to the dogs we love, and a reflection on the limitations of life, this book shows a triumph of the spirit. Rich in poetic citations, it is an environmental cry for help, a naturalistic appreciation of a dissolving world, and a deeply spiritual reminder that nothing loved is ever lost.
