Book Distant Hybridization of Crop Plants

Download or read book Distant Hybridization of Crop Plants written by G. Kalloo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild taxa are invaluable sources of resistance to diseases, insects/ pests, nematodes, temperature extremes, salinity and alkalinity stresses, and also of nutritional quality; adaptation; genetic diversity and new species. Utilization of wild relatives of a crop depends largely upon its crossability relations with cultivated varieties. Sev eral wild species are not crossable with the commercial cultivars due to various isolation barriers. Furthermore, in a few cases, hybridiza tion is possible only in one direction and reciprocal crosses are not successful, thus depriving the utilization of desired cytoplasm of many species. However, techniques have been developed to over come many barriers and hybrid plants are produced. New crop species have been developed by overcoming the F 1 sterility and producing amphidiploids and such crops are commercially being grown in the field. The segregation pattern ofF 1 hybrids produced by distant hybridization in segregating generations are different from the intervarietal hybrids. In former cases, generally, unidirectional segregation takes place in early generations and accordingly, selec tion procedures are adopted. In most of the cases, backcross or modified backcross methods have been followed to utilize wild species, and thus numerous types of resistance and other economical attributes have been transferred in the recurrent parents. Protoplast fusion has been amply demonstrated in a number of cases where sexual hybridization was not possible and, as a result, hybrids have been produced.

Book Plant Cell Culture Protocols

Download or read book Plant Cell Culture Protocols written by Víctor M. Loyola-Vargas and published by Humana Press. This book was released on 2012-05-10 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell culture methodologies have become standard procedures in most plant laboratories. Currently, facilities for in vitro cell cultures are found in practically every plant biology laboratory, serving different purposes since tissue culture has turned into a basic asset for modern biotechnology, from the fundamental biochemical aspects to the massive propagation of selected individuals. “Plant Cell Culture Protocols, Third Edition is divided into five convenient sections that cover topics from general methodologies, such as culture induction, growth and viability evaluation, statistical analysis and contamination control, to highly specialized techniques, such as clonal propagation, haploid production, somatic embryogenesis, organelle transformation. The volume concludes with a section on the laborious process of measuring the epigenetics changes in tissue cultures.”Written in the successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and easily accessible, Plant Cell Culture Protocols, Third Edition seeks to serve both professionals and novices with its guide to the most common and applicable techniques and methods for plant tissue and cell culture.

Book Genetic Improvement of Vegetable Crops

Download or read book Genetic Improvement of Vegetable Crops written by G. Kalloo and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 846 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic improvement has played a vital role in enhancing the yield potential of vegetable crops. There are numerous vegetable crops grown worldwide and variable degrees of research on genetics, breeding and biotechnology have been conducted on these crops. This book brings together the results of such research on crops grouped as alliums, crucifers, cucurbits, leaf crops, tropical underground and miscellaneous. Written by eminent specialists, each chapter concentrates on one crop and covers cytology, genetics, breeding objectives, germplasm resources, reproductive biology, selection breeding methods, heterosis and hybrid seed production, quality and processing attributes and technology. This unique collection will be of great value to students, scientists and vegetable breeders as it provides a reference guide on genetics, breeding and biotechnology of a wide range of vegetable crops.
