Book Interracial Lovers in Revolutionary China

Download or read book Interracial Lovers in Revolutionary China written by D. E. Mungello and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twentieth century, China underwent a monumental dynastic change and was transformed from an outmoded monarchy into a modern communist state. This century of revolutionary change was marked by political upheaval and social chaos. It was a period in which Chinese began to go abroad to study and conduct business while foreigners came to China for economic opportunity and adventure. In the process, Chinese and foreigners began to meet and form romantic relationships. These love affairs (fengliu yunshi 風流韻事) are notable because they coincided with the last phase of Western imperialism, including its lingering racial prejudices and even laws against interracial sexual relationships. Conversely in China, there were periodic outbreaks of hostility and violence against foreigners. This book explores the interracial relationships of twenty-two people who, transcended these obstacles to cross color lines and fall in love.

Book excerpt: An interracial couple gives an honest glimpse into how they’ve dealt with the tension of race in their relationship and their lives. When Tineka Smith and Alex Court first fell in love, neither were prepared for the disconnect between them when it came to race. As a Black American woman, Tineka struggled with the oppression and microaggressions she faced on a daily basis, and it took Alex, a White British man, a lot of soul-searching to see that his life-long expectations were skewed by his privilege. The couple’s struggles were amplified when the Black Lives Matter movement swept across the United States and the world. Mixed Up is their confessional. In a series of alternating chapters, Tineka and Alex share their deepest feelings and the lessons they’ve learned about race and privilege—from their childhoods to their education and workplace experiences to thoughts about their future children. While Tineka finds herself in the role of racial equality advocate in her own relationship, Alex learns what it means to be a true ally as a person—and a husband. In all its raw heartache, humor, and honesty, their story brings hope that there is a future in which interracial relationships and families can find love and acceptance. “An illuminating book that will challenge what you think you know about relationships, cultural diversity and race.” —Olivette Otele, historian and author of African Europeans “A must read book that will change the way we see mixed race couples and make us question our own entrenched beliefs.” —Melissa Fleming, award-winning author of A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea

They'd be financially secure – creating a life without the money worries they both grew up with. That's why Bria couldn't process what Gunner was telling her. *** "I'm sorry, but I had to tell you. I'm sorry, Bria. You have to believe me," Gunner pleaded. "I want to work through this. I'm hoping that in time you can forgive me. I love you. You're the only woman I've ever loved. You know this." He looked sincere. He sounded sincere. She knew this man. She loved this man. But … "Work through this?" Bria laughed humorlessly, drowning out the voices in her head and the love in her heart. "Let me get this straight. You‘re telling me that you've been cheating on me; that you have a one-month old baby with whoever the slut is, and you want me," she said, putting her index finger to her chest, "to somehow find it in me to work things out with you? Have you lost your ever-loving mind?!" she exploded. *** It couldn't be true. It just couldn't. But it was. And she had to accept it. But when Bria suddenly finds herself pregnant, will she and her ex-husband find their way back to each other? Or, will she find lasting love with a new flame?
