Specifically, this study focuses on Carl Maria von Weber's Grand Duo Concertant Op. 48 for clarinet and piano. The primary focus is not to suggest an ideal interpretation, but rather show how different analytical methods can lead to different interpretations of the same music with supporting reasoning. The methods of analysis used were formal analysis (drawing from the work of Willia m Caplin, James Hepokoski and Warren Darcy, and Douglass Green), performance analysis (from Karen McLaughlin Large), narrative analysis (drawing from the methods described by Robert Hatten and Byron Almén), and concatenationism (from Jerrold Levinson). When contextualized with historic accounts of Weber's focus for composition, general musical styles of the early nineteenth century, and the development for how analysis informs interpretation and performance, this study offers options for how to approach different components of the Grand Duo along with how those interpretive choices could translate to live performance or change the approach the performers take to realize those moments in performance. Naturally, the level of subjectivity in an individual's performance considerations has to be navigated in a study of this nature, therefore, the suggestions made accommodate for that in showing the interpretive options that the chosen methods of analysis can reach rather than ignoring the subjective element of musical performance and offering an ideal guide to performance based on analysis.
