Book Readings in Qualitative Reasoning About Physical Systems

Download or read book Readings in Qualitative Reasoning About Physical Systems written by Daniel S. Weld and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readings in Qualitative Reasoning about Physical Systems describes the automated reasoning about the physical world using qualitative representations. This text is divided into nine chapters, each focusing on some aspect of qualitative physics. The first chapter deal with qualitative physics, which is concerned with representing and reasoning about the physical world. The goal of qualitative physics is to capture both the commonsense knowledge of the person on the street and the tacit knowledge underlying the quantitative knowledge used by engineers and scientists. The succeeding chapter discusses the qualitative calculus and its role in constructing an envisionment that includes behavior over both mythical time and elapsed time. These topics are followed by reviews of the mathematical aspects of qualitative reasoning, history-based simulation and temporal reasoning, as well as the intelligence in scientific computing. The final chapters are devoted to automated modeling for qualitative reasoning and causal explanations of behavior. These chapters also examine the qualitative kinematics of reasoning about shape and space. This book will prove useful to psychologists and psychiatrists.

Book Interpreting Quantum Mechanics

Download or read book Interpreting Quantum Mechanics written by Lars-Göran Johansson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting a realistic interpretation of quantum mechanics and, in particular, a realistic view of quantum waves, this book defends, with one exception, Schrodinger's views on quantum mechanics. Johansson goes on to defend the view that the collapse of a wave function during a measurement is a real physical collapse of a wave and argues that the collapse is a consequence of quantisation of interaction. Lastly Johansson argues for a revised principle of individuation in the quantum domain and that this principle enables a sort of explanation of non-local phenomena.

Book The Everett Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

Download or read book The Everett Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics written by Hugh Everett and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-20 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugh Everett III was an American physicist best known for his many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, which formed the basis of his PhD thesis at Princeton University in 1957. Although counterintuitive, Everett's revolutionary formulation of quantum mechanics offers the most direct solution to the infamous quantum measurement problem--that is, how and why the singular world of our experience emerges from the multiplicities of alternatives available in the quantum world. The many-worlds interpretation postulates the existence of multiple universes. Whenever a measurement-like interaction occurs, the universe branches into relative states, one for each possible outcome of the measurement, and the world in which we find ourselves is but one of these many, but equally real, possibilities. Everett's challenge to the orthodox interpretation of quantum mechanics was met with scorn from Niels Bohr and other leading physicists, and Everett subsequently abandoned academia to conduct military operations research. Today, however, Everett's formulation of quantum mechanics is widely recognized as one of the most controversial but promising physical theories of the last century. In this book, Jeffrey Barrett and Peter Byrne present the long and short versions of Everett's thesis along with a collection of his explanatory writings and correspondence. These primary source documents, many of them newly discovered and most unpublished until now, reveal how Everett's thinking evolved from his days as a graduate student to his untimely death in 1982. This definitive volume also features Barrett and Byrne's introductory essays, notes, and commentary that put Everett's extraordinary theory into historical and scientific perspective and discuss the puzzles that still remain.

Book Foundations and Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

Download or read book Foundations and Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics written by Gennaro Auletta and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 1030 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is twofold: to provide a comprehensive account of the foundations of the theory and to outline a theoretical and philosophical interpretation suggested from the results of the last twenty years. There is a need to provide an account of the foundations of the theory because recent experience has largely confirmed the theory and offered a wealth of new discoveries and possibilities. On the other side, the following results have generated a new basis for discussing the problem of the interpretation: the new developments in measurement theory; the experimental generation of ?Schr”dinger cats?; recent developments which allow, for the first time, the simultaneous measurement of complementary observables; quantum information processing, teleportation and computation. To accomplish this task, the book combines historical, systematic and thematic approaches.

Book The Many Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

Download or read book The Many Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics written by Bryce Seligman Dewitt and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel interpretation of quantum mechanics, first proposed in brief form by Hugh Everett in 1957, forms the nucleus around which this book has developed. In his interpretation, Dr. Everett denies the existence of a separate classical realm and asserts the propriety of considering a state vector for the whole universe. Because this state vector never collapses, reality as a whole is rigorously deterministic. This reality, which is described jointly by the dynamical variables and the state vector, is not the reality customarily perceived; rather, it is a reality composed of many worlds. By virtue of the temporal development of the dynamical variables, the state vector decomposes naturally into orthogonal vectors, reflecting a continual splitting of the universe into a multitude of mutually unobservable but equally real worlds, in each of which every good measurement has yielded a definite result, and in most of which the familiar statistical quantum laws hold. The volume contains Dr. Everett's short paper from 1957, "'Relative State' Formulation of Quantum Mechanics," and a far longer exposition of his interpretation, entitled "The Theory of the Universal Wave Function," never before published. In addition, other papers by Wheeler, DeWitt, Graham, and Cooper and Van Vechten provide further discussion of the same theme. Together, they constitute virtually the entire world output of scholarly commentary on the Everett interpretation. Originally published in 1973. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Book Interpreting quantum mechanics a historical approach

Download or read book Interpreting quantum mechanics a historical approach written by Favio, Vitery Cala and published by Editorial Tadeo Lozano. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book condenses some of the critical features of the discussion about the interpretative problems of quantum mechanics, pointing out some possible ways out of the conundrum. In order to set the road for these matters, chapter one introduces a conceptual history of the theory and its alternative interpretations. Chapter two profiles a taxonomy of the interpretative problems and some possible solutions, focused in the so-called measurement problem. Chapter three questions the thesis of quantum mechanics becoming what it is due to historical contingency. Finally, in chapter four, an argument is advanced to consider one particular interpretation –the causal account- as an alternative view that may help with the solution of the interpretative knot.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rigorous case for the primacy of mind in nature, from philosophy to neuroscience, psychology and physics. The Idea of the World offers a grounded alternative to the frenzy of unrestrained abstractions and unexamined assumptions in philosophy and science today. This book examines what can be learned about the nature of reality based on conceptual parsimony, straightforward logic and empirical evidence from fields as diverse as physics and neuroscience. It compiles an overarching case for idealism - the notion that reality is essentially mental - from ten original articles the author has previously published in leading academic journals. The case begins with an exposition of the logical fallacies and internal contradictions of the reigning physicalist ontology and its popular alternatives, such as bottom-up panpsychism. It then advances a compelling formulation of idealism that elegantly makes sense of - and reconciles - classical and quantum worlds. The main objections to idealism are systematically refuted and empirical evidence is reviewed that corroborates the formulation presented here. The book closes with an analysis of the hidden psychological motivations behind mainstream physicalism and the implications of idealism for the way we relate to the world.

Book The Impact of Critical Rationalism

Download or read book The Impact of Critical Rationalism written by Raphael Sassower and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a student and disciple of Karl Popper and longtime managing editor of Philosophy of the Social Sciences, Ian C. Jarvie extended the notion of Critical Rationalism to be useful in anthropology, aesthetics, film studies, and various social sciences. In this Festschrift, contributors from a range of interests and disciplines engage with the Popperian legacy and Jarvie’s scholarly and editorial work in Critical Rationalism to contextualize it in the broader, contemporary intellectual landscape. These original essays not only honor Jarvie’s legacy, but expand it to cross the philosophical divide between analytic and continental schools of thought. In so doing, the authors bring the state-of-the-art achievements of Critical Rationalism to the forefront of current academic debates.

Book Optimal Observation for Cyber physical Systems

Download or read book Optimal Observation for Cyber physical Systems written by Zhen Song and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Optimal Observation for Cyber-physical Systems" addresses the challenge, fundamental to the design of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), presented by the obligatory trade-off between precise estimates and system constraints. A unified theoretical framework, based on the well-established theory of optimal experimental design and providing consistent solutions to problems hitherto requiring a variety of approaches, is put forward to solve a large class of optimal observation problems. The Fisher information matrix plays a key role in this framework and makes it feasible to provide analytical solutions to some complex and important questions which could not be answered in the past. Readers with an applied background in WSN implementation will find all the understanding of the key theory of optimal experimental design they need within this book. The use of multiple examples to illustrate the theoretical parts of the book brings the subject into sharper focus than would an abstract theoretical disquisition.

Book Cyber Physical Social Intelligence

Download or read book Cyber Physical Social Intelligence written by Hai Zhuge and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores next-generation artificial intelligence based on the symbiosis between humans, machines and nature, including the rules and emerging patterns of recognition, and the integration and optimization of various flows through cyberspace, physical space and social space. It unveils a reciprocal human-machine-nature symbiotic mechanism together with relevant rules on structuring and evolving reality, and also proposes a multi-dimensional space for modelling reality and managing the methodologies for exploring reality. As such it lays the foundation for the emerging research area cyber-physical-social intelligence. Inspiring researchers and university students to explore the development of intelligence and scientific methodology, it is intended for researchers and broad readers with a basic understanding of computer science and the natural sciences. Next-generation artificial intelligence will extend machine intelligence and human intelligence to cyber-physical-social intelligence rendered by various interactions in cyberspace, physical space and social space. With the transformational development of science and society, a multi-dimensional reality is emerging and evolving, leading to the generation and development of various spaces obeying different principles. A fundamental scientific challenge is uncovering the essential mechanisms and principles that structure and evolve the reality emerging and evolving along various dimensions. Meeting this challenge requires identifying the basic relations between humans, machines and nature in order to reveal the cyber-physical-social principles.

Book Cultural Analysis and the Navigation of Complexity

Download or read book Cultural Analysis and the Navigation of Complexity written by Lisa Kaye Brandt and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2007 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complexities involved in social dilemmas and ecological troubles today challenge scientists to conduct analyses of cultural phenomena that push the boundaries of disciplines and blur the line between theory and practice.
