Book Sex in Christianity and Psychoanalysis

Download or read book Sex in Christianity and Psychoanalysis written by William Graham Cole and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1956, this survey of the interpretations of sex by the major figures in Christian thought and in psychoanalysis made an important contribution to the re-thinking of our sexual morality at the time. The author refutes the common belief that the negative attitude toward sex and the body, which had been predominant in western civilization, originated with Christianity. He shows that such a viewpoint was widespread in the early Hellenism Age, nearly three centuries before Christ. He emphasizes the essentially positive view which Biblical religion demands and shows how Christianity’s attitude early became corrupted by the dualism of the Orient. He points to the need for a return to essential naturalism and the Biblical interpretation of sex. The first part of the book consists of a historical treatment in the Christian tradition, touching upon the teaching of Jesus, Paul, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin and others. He analyses the classical and contemporary attitudes and ideas in both Catholic and Protestant circles and shows how Christian understanding comes into conflict with psychoanalysis. In the later portions of the book the author discusses sex and psychoanalysis and the major problems in sexual mores. He ends with a synthesis of the religious and psychoanalytic points of view and a critical reconstruction of a Christian interpretation.

Download or read book The Mutual Society written by Kenneth G. Greet and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book briefly surveys the traditional teaching of the Christian Church about the relationship of men and women, and then examines some of the new factors which have made necessary a critical reassessment of it, particularly of those emphases which are negative. One of the most powerful of these factors is the emancipation of women and the recognition that they are not of a lower status than men. Against this background the inner meaning of sexuality is examined, and stress is laid on both the difficulties and the opportunities of the new situation. Mr. Greet believes that we must guide the revolution in sexual relationship towards the creation of a society in which men and women make their free, equal-though-differing contributions to the richer texture of life which is God's will for them both in marriage and within the wider life in the community.

Book excerpt: Few would doubt that this is a time of transition in our understanding of human sexuality. The confusion about sexual morals and mores is the more obvious evidence of this. But there is something else. For too long the bulk of Christian reflection about sexuality has asked an essentially one-directional question: what does Christian faith have to say about our lives as sexual beings?

Examining the gospel, Dimont re-creates the drama in three acts using his knowledge of the events recorded in the Bible. Dimont’s insight is intelligent and surprising.

Book Modern Psychoanalysis

Download or read book Modern Psychoanalysis written by Judd Marmor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 1210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Psychoanalys is is a definitive exploration of the expanding horizons of this still controversial approach to and treatment of human behavior. In the first paperback release of a work sponsored by the American Academy of Psychoanalysis, thirty-five authorities explore new approaches to psychoanalytic theory and therapy, and examine the growing interaction between this field and the other social and behavioral sciences. Modern Psychoanalysis demonstrates how some of the leading figures are bringing their discipline into the mainstream of biological and social through! making use of systems theory, information processing, the constructs of adaptation and learning, and other new tools and findings. The book is unusually free of the jargon that has separated psychoanalysis in the past from the rest of behavioral and social science. Some of the authors and their subjects are: Roy Grinker, "Conceptual Progress in Analysis"; Jin-gen Ruesch, "Psychoanalysis between Two Cultures"; Edward Tauber, "Dreaming and Modern Dream Theory"; Jules Masserman, "The Biody-namic Roots of Psychoanalysis"; Lewis H. Wolberg, "Short-term Psychotherapy"; Stuart M. Finch and Albert Cain, "Psychoanalysis of Children"; Morris Parloff, "Analytic Group Psychotherapy"; Salvador Minuchin, "The Low Socioeconomic Population"; Leonard Duhl and Robert Leopold, "Psychoanalysis and Social Agencies"; Leo'n Edel, "Psychoanalysis and the Creative Arts"; Arnold A. Rogow, "Psychiatry, History and Political Science"; and John R. Seeley, "Psychiatry: Revolution, Reform and Reaction." The volume is prepared with the rigor and comprehensiveness that should make the book a standard handbook for psychiatrists, psychologists, and behavioral scientists. And it is written with a sense of curious readers who may simply be interested in the basic stances of this controversial field of theory and practice. It has earned sufficient plaudits to be called a classic in the field. Judd Manner's new introduction gives added weight to such claims.

Book Psychoanalytic Readings of Hawthorne s Romances

Download or read book Psychoanalytic Readings of Hawthorne s Romances written by David B. Diamond and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering innovative, psychoanalytic readings of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s four romances, this volume systematically applies Freudian theory to present significant new insights into the psychology of Hawthorne’s characters and their fates. By critically examining scenes in which the protagonists confront past traumas, Diamond underscores the transformative potential which Hawthorne attributes to encounters with the unconscious. Psychoanalytic narrative technique is employed to interpret the psychogical crises, all hidden by Hawthorne in narrative gaps, in The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, The Blithedale Romance, and The Marble Faun. The protagonists' transformations that are illuminated are crucial to an understanding of the trajectory and resolution of the romances. The text will benefit both academic and non-academic readers who seek a deeper understanding of the psychology of Hawthorne's romances. It will be of particular interest to educators and researchers of applied psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic technique. Since its conclusions challenge many currently held critical views, this volume is especially relevant to scholars of Hawthorne studies, interdisciplinary literary studies, and 19th century American literature.
