Book Between PIAAC and the New Literacy Studies

Download or read book Between PIAAC and the New Literacy Studies written by Anke Grotlüschen and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2021-01-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this book we present a selection of articles that critically deal with (internationally comparative) large-scale assessments. We acknowledge that studies such as PIAAC are often designed, financed and implemented on the basis of neo-liberal worldviews. Nevertheless, we would like to use the articles that are presented here to show the various ways in which adult and continuing education can benefit and learn from the knowledge that they generate. In PIAAC, for example, there are huge differences between the surveyed variables and the theoretical frameworks on literacies and literacy practices that the New Literacy Studies (NLS) have brought out. This book features eleven articles, which – with the NLS’s theoretical considerations and points of criticism in mind – find new and alternative evaluations and interpretations of the data. Not only can they show effects of marginalization on a large scale, but the data can also provide information about mechanisms of power in relation to literacy and basic competencies.

Book Mapping out the Research Field of Adult Education and Learning

Download or read book Mapping out the Research Field of Adult Education and Learning written by Andreas Fejes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-22 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the current state of the art in research on the education and learning of adults, and how such research has been transformed through contemporary policy and research practices. Gathering contributions from leading experts in the field, the book draws on previous research, as well as new findings in order to provide a map of this research field and its contemporary history. The chapters address a number of questions, including: What constitutes this research field? What theories and methodologies dominate within the field? What “invisible colleges” are active in shaping this academic field, in marking out its contours and in transforming its contemporary battle zones? Who is publishing in the field and who is deemed worth citing? What is the relationship between the shift in state policy on adult education and the research that is conducted on the education and learning of adults? How has the research field changed over time in various western countries? What do these meta-reflections of the field tell us about possible future research endeavours? Rather than speaking from within the field, this is a book about the research field. The diversity of the chapters provide a fascinating resource for anyone interested in research on the education and learning of adults.

Download or read book Reading and Dyslexia written by Thomas Lachmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume a group of well-known experts of the field cover topics ranging from basic visual and auditory information processing to higher order cognition in reading and dyslexia, from basic research to remediation approaches and from well-established theories to new hypotheses about reading acquisition and causes for its failure. Reading is one of the most intriguing feats human evolution ever came up with. There is no evolutionary basis for reading as such; reading is secondary to language and the result of a complex skill acquisition at the end of which almost all pre-existing cognitive functions are mobilized. With the right instruction and practice most people learn this skill smoothly. Some, however, have problems, despite same opportunities and general cognitive abilities. This developmental dyslexia results from a neuro developmental disorder leading to deficits in reading relevant information processing. But what deficits are these, and can they be trained?

Book Quality and Impact in Global Education

Download or read book Quality and Impact in Global Education written by Claudia Bergmüller and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several years now, the demand for increased impact orientation has also affected the field of Global Education (GE) / Development Education and Awareness Raising (DEAR). In this context, a vivid discussion is still ongoing regarding what can be considered an ›impact‹ in GE/DEAR and how these impacts can be analysed. Both questions are dealt with within the scope of the research project ›Impacts and methods of impact monitoring in development education and awareness raising‹, which was financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and which is to be presented in this volume. Against the backdrop of the empirical findings of this research project, this publication shows which effects can be targeted in the planning and evaluation of GE-/DEAR-projects and which contextual conditions can influence their effectiveness.

Book Portals to the Past and to the Future

Download or read book Portals to the Past and to the Future written by Jürgen Seefeldt and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of the digital era has raised questions on the future course of library development. The challenge of maintaining a balance between their educational, cultural and service roles has presented libraries with new challenges - challenges which their rich and varied media holdings, modern technical infrastructure and information specialist competence well equip them to face. This fourth revised and updated English edition of "Portals to the Past and to the Future" by Jürgen Seefeldt and Ludger Syré, now in its fifth German edition, is an in-depth state-of-the art report on current German librarianship. Lavishly illustrated, the book traces the history of libraries in Germany, portrays the various types of library and cites many examples of the outstanding achievements of nationwide library cooperation in the Federal Republic of Germany. The reader will gain both a revealing insight into the cultural and educational policy underlying the German library system and an outline of the profession. Special attention has been paid to current developments such as the preservation and presentation of the common cultural heritage and the emergence of the digital library. This book has been translated not only into English but also into Arabic, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Russian and Turkish and is now the standard work on libraries and librarianship in Germany. Because of the interest it has generated internationally, it was decided to publish the German and English versions of this new edition simultaneously. The book provides trainee librarians and non-librarians alike with a clear picture of the way in which libraries were able to cooperate in the aftermath of the Second World War to overcome the vagaries of the federal system and create an effective decentralized library network more than a match for the challenges of the third millennium.

Book Towards a Comprehensive Theory of Human Learning

Download or read book Towards a Comprehensive Theory of Human Learning written by Peter Jarvis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As interest grows in theories of lifelong learning not only across society but also as an area of serious academic study, the need has arisen for a thorough and critical study of the phenomenon. This distillation of the work of renowned writer Peter Jarvis addresses this need, looking at the processes involved in human learning from birth to old age and moving the field on from previous unsystematic and mainly psychological studies. Instead, Jarvis argues that learning is existential, and so its study must be complex and interdisciplinary. The result is a giant step towards building a complete and integrated theory of how humans learn, taking account of existing theories to see if they can be reconciled with a more complex model. Applying his expert analytical approach to this wide-ranging topic, Jarvis looks in detail at: learning in the social context the transformation of experience the outcomes of learning learning and action cognitive theories emotions and learning experiential learning.
