Yurow and published by Washington, D.C. : George Washington University, Center for Telecommunications Studies. This book was released on 1983 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed to provide the legal practitioner with the basic tools to understand the international telecommunications field, this document was originally prepared in connection with the 1983 Conference on International Telecommunications. An introductory chapter focuses on where policy is made and lists international organizations involved with telecommunications policy; United States Government Executive Branch Agencies, their functions, and staff; and relevant congressional committees and their key members, staff, and current interest in international telecommunications. Other pertinent legislative branch organizations are also described. Separate chapters then cover the International Telecommunication Union, regulatory environment, transborder data flow, telecommunications and trade policy, and intellectual property. For each topic, an introductory essay describing important developments and major concerns is followed by selected materials which include United States laws, regulations, and proposed legislation; judicial and administrative decisions; treaties and agreements; a description of the ongoing activities of key international organizations; a description of the Executive Branch Interagency and Public Advisory Committees; a selected bibliography; and additional information. A glossary and conclusions are provided. (LMM)

Book History of the International Telecommunication Union ITU

Download or read book History of the International Telecommunication Union ITU written by Gabriele Balbi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the history of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), from its origins in the mid-19th century to nowadays. ITU was the first international organization ever and still plays a crucial role in managing global telecommunications today. Putting together some of the most relevant scholars in the field of transnational communications, the book covers the history of ITU from 1865 to digital times in a truly global perspective, taking into account several technologies like the telegraph, the telephone, cables, wireless, radio, television, satellites, mobile phone, the internet and others. The main goal is to identify the long-term strategies of regulation and the techno-diplomatic manoeuvres taken inside ITU, from convincing the majority of the nations to establish the official seat of the Telegraph Union bureau in Switzerland in the 1860s, to contrasting the multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance (supported by US and ICANN). History of the International Telecommunication Union is a trans-disciplinary text and can be interesting for scholars and students in the fields of telecommunications, media, international organizations, transnational communication, diplomacy, political economy of communication, STS, and others. It has the ambition to become a reference point in the history of ITU and, at the same time, just the fi rst comprehensive step towards a longer, inter-technological, political and cultural history of transnational communications to be written in the future.

Book Unfinished Business

Download or read book Unfinished Business written by Gary Clyde Hufbauer and published by Peterson Institute. This book was released on 1997 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1997, 69 countries accounting for 95 percent of world telecommunications traffic agreed to open their basic telecommunications service markets. In April 1997, 28 countries accounting for 80 percent of world trade in information technology (IT) goods agreed to eliminate tariffs on IT goods by January 2000. These two agreements represent significant steps toward global telecommunication liberalization. The agreements also mark the beginning of new battles that will determine the extent of competition and reform in the telecommunications industry in the 21st century. Although implementation of the two pacts will be phased in over several years, some signatory countries are already facing a backlash from local telecommunications companies and equipment suppliers. Hence the issue remains highly contentious around the world. In this volume, leading scholars from different countries offer their assessments of the two new agreements. They also predict the evolution of the telecommunications industry in the years ahead. The volume provides essential background on future developments in this dynamic and crucial sector, and suggests ways in which it can be shaped to provide maximum benefits for the world economy.
