Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first symposium on sediment/freshwater interactions was held in Amsterdam, in 1976, and the second was held at Kingston, Ontario, Canada, in 1981. The third symposium was held at the University of Geneva, in 1984, and also included a num ber of contributions dealing with sediment/saltwater interactions. It is expected that future symposia of this series will retain this approach, and that the revised sympo sium title will remain the same for later proceedings of these meetings. Because of the large number of submissions in 1984, many were given as poster presentations. Extended abstracts of all contributions to the Geneva symposium appear in Interactions Between Sediments and Ubter (C. E. P. Consultants Ltd. , 26 Albany St. , Edinburgh, EHI 3QH, U. K. , 1984). Full-length papers appear only in the proceedings. The format of the third symposium was similar to its predecessors. The location provided a particularly good opportunity for attendance by European scientists, who represented about 81% of the participants. About 16% came from North America and 3% were from Southeast Asia and Australia. It is unfortunate that there were no contributors from either Africa or South America, or other parts of Asia. In all, 16 countries were represented at this symposium. In a continuing attempt to provide equal opportunities for attendance by scientists from other parts of the world, it is planned to hold the next symposium in Australia in 1987. Book excerpt: The International Joint Commission (IJC) was established between Canada and the United States under the Boundary Water Agreement in 1909. The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement between the two countries (signed in 1972, revised and renewed in 1978) expresses the determination of each country to restore and en hance the water quality of the largest freshwater system in the world. The Agreement provides for two inter national boards to assist the IJC: the Great Lakes Water Quality Board and the Great Lakes Science Advisory Board. In 1982, the Dredging Subcommittee of the Great Lakes Water Quality Board was asked to investigate and provide an assessment of the environmental impacts of sediment-bound contaminants and to recom mend alternate strategies for solving ecological problems associated with the presence and removal of pollu tants. This issue however, was beyond the scope of the Dredging Subcommittee. It was then referred to the Great Lakes Science Advisory Board with a specific request that the Board focus on whether contaminated sediments located in areas with water quality problems and impaired uses should be removed and if so, under what conditions. The Science Advisory Board established a Task Force to address these issues with specific reference to: - provide the IJC with an assessment of the effects of sediment-bound contaminants on biota and water quality; - recommend appropriate remedies for possible application by the parties for remedial activities in the Great Lakes; and - identify gaps in knowledge and suggest appropriate investigations to provide this knowledge.

Current opinions differ widely, in part because for every proposed link between acid rain and adverse environmental effects an alternative explanation based on other phenomena can be or has been proposed, and in many cases cannot be readily dismissed. The specific areas addressed in this volume include the emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides, precipitation chemistry, atmospheric sulfates and visibility, surface water chemistry, sediment chemistry and abundance of diatom taxa, fish populations, and forest productivity. The book then draws conclusions about the acid deposition-phenomenon relationship, identifying phenomena which are directly acid deposition-caused and suggesting others apparently caused by human activities unrelated to acid deposition.
